I would have preferred Mac in midfield all along, but we have let Logan go without first finding out whether Yennaris is capable of stepping straight in at RB.

Playing mac in midfield would mean dropping JD , Adam or George , which would be a big call given 1 week ago saw the best midfield performance I have ever seen from us.

But, with respect, we weren't playing Wolves last week were we.

Mark Warburton

It's a big call to drop any of these three to the bench after 1 defeat.

Agree with Nick's comments about last week, having seen the Crewe demolition, it was easy to underestimated Wolves midfield yesterday, I'm sure Warburton didn't, but the battle was going to be decided in the middle of the pitch and man for man it looked like to us with a red and white tinted eye that Wolves couldn't match us. They did, Henry, Jacobs, Sako and McDonald were a championship midfield. Sav tried to make things happen but went deeper searching for the ball, Adam tried a little too hard and Henry made his mark on Judge as niggly clever midfielders do. Sako drifted but came more influential as we got stretched. Dougie was the only midfielder that played at the same level as last week.

Wolves looked a far better team than when we battled at Molineaux, Dicko for Griffiths no comparison, a great purchase. I am not too downhearted. We are a good team, Wolves are stronger than any team I saw last season, a good mid table Championship level. For an hour yesterday the game was in the balance. On a dog of a pitch, both sides had a lot of talent. In nine months time both of these sides look like they will still be developing and rising in a higher level, rather than a survival fight similar to Yeovil and Doncaster. :sorted:

No but same midfield has accounted for pne and Peterborough amongst others

Think the comments re hauling AF are pretty pointless considering the third goal was in the 86th minute. Just listening to MW again and he felt we were dominating the second half for the first 25 minutes. Some might disagree and I have no access to statistics, but even at 2-0 we were definitely still in it. The problem for me is that even when a player like Donaldson has a bad game, he is still capable of a bit of magic to steal a vital goal. Same goes for Judge, Trotta, Saville and of course Adam.

A previous manager was accused of worrying to much about the opposition, I am glad that we no longer do that but play our own game, however Warbs has to give some thought to the relative strengths and weaknesses of the opposition and yesterday that became apparent

Don't want to drift back into the old days but perhaps yesterday a line striker and a 5 man midfield may have been better

Don't think so. Simple matter is they defended deep which nullified our full backs from getting round the back. I can barely remember Mac getting forward on the right hand side like normal.

We probably played the best side in the division yesterday. No need to change anything. An additional centre forward is a must but otherwise don't see much to worry about.

Mark Warburton

No but you must be to think that posting such drivel even as a joke is amusing

NLB, I enjoy your posts for the most part but have come round to thinking that, perhaps, you are taking things a little too serious.

Stay and post please. :I'mwithbillyhunt:

But that is the point; it isn't just 'only a game'; there is huge fiscal investment in play; there are people's livelihoods at stake; I sat with people in the NR yesterday for whom the Club's progress and success has meant a great deal to them and to their families for several generations; and 'crass' might be a better word to describe casually trivialising all of this in public.

I agree with what you are saying about Crewe, I was there and we were superb. But in a game like yesterday I would have preferred the extra bite of both Mac and JD with one of Adam or George (beforehand I would have chosen Adam but George actually had much the better game).

Mark Warburton

We seem to disagree on the midfield sonafabee, I was disappointed with George today. Didn't look to get on the ball and wasn't effective when on it. Well that is my opinion anyway.

Correct

Mark Warburton

"Total football", as nice as it might be, won't get us promoted automatically... I hope I am wrong.

Well, it won us 16 of 19 games! It was the beginning of the season that is costing us, and that was hardly total football. Most teams at our level can't cope with Saville and Forshaw. Wolves did -- good for them. Personally I would prefer Mac to JD in the centre with them, but now that Logan has gone that is not a realistic option at present (as Yennaris didn't look ready in his first game). Our pitch may cramp our style but hopefully as better weather arrives, the pitch will improve.

Mark Warburton

Tbh, I thought Douglas performed the role you're suggesting Macca should have played extremely well today but he was the only midfielder to get amongst the Wolves midfield IMO.

Macca all day for me in the middle.JD had a good game, but was alone and needed someone of Maccas ilk in there with him.The midfield was screaming out for it and we made life to easy for Kev Mac and co.

Anyway its done now and time to move along.

Mark Warburton

TBH we will see what warbs is made of now we have lost that game as the players may well be a bit down after such a run but the fact the crowd stayed till the end should make his job easier as the players should realise if it was ever in doubt the crowd is behind them.

Stayed until the end? They were bloody streaming out of Braemar, it really p****d me off.

Correct. The Bees Player team even noticed people leaving.

Mark Warburton

of course people are going to leave early when your 3- 0 down at home with a couple of minutes to go

I've no issue with Mac and Douglas playing in the middle when and if required but I certainly wouldn't be in favour of playing Mac instead of Douglas, not least in light of the latter's form over the past few games.

Mark Warburton

Well it won us 16 and drew us 3 in the last 19 games. What utter tosh.

Anyway, we do mix up when we need to, JD, HD, TC and Mac are hardly shrinking violets are they?

No its not, we are 1 point behind with 2 games in hand...get a grip. You mention we have won 16 out of 19 games whilst going unbeaten...how can 4 defeats in 3/4 of a season be "costing us"?

Mark Warburton

I had 10 blokes sitting around me who turned up 10 minutes late all pissed up, spent ages trying to get seated and clambering back and forwards trying to find their seats. They left before half time to go to the pub and only half came back. Not sure why they bothered to be honest.

I'm pretty sure I had a wolves fan in front of me... Not only did he get to up to gee on the 2nd goal, after a few handball shouts, he started 'mocking' us with his own handball chants every time they touched the ball for the next 2-3 minutes...

I know you can do without anymore confrontation but if he upset you why didn't you report him?

Mark Warburton

Those four may not be softies, but they're hardly huge, either (eg see Wolves' 2 CB's and compare them with HD and TC). And none of the other six outfielders are notable for shoving their weight around.

I came away from the game thinking two things. First, when we come up against a good team which is also particularly big, then we may struggle. OK, that need not hurt us for the remainder of our games, since Wolves are probably exceptional on both counts (Rotherham, maybe?). Nonetheless, all good teams need a balance, and if/when we do go up, that lack of balance is more likely to be exploited if not attended to.

And coming back to the thread title, I also thought MW was outsmarted by KJ. In particular, Wolves were maintaining a high line in the first half, which made it hard for us to play our normal game. Then, having got a goal just before HT, he introduced Plan B for the second half i.e. drop back, soak up the pressure and hit us on the break. Both tactics were well executed (even if 3-0 was harsh). Consequently, Bees seemed unsure at times whether to try to match Wolves physically ("earn the right to play"), or concentrate on out-passing them ("play your normal game")

Which should be no shame whatever for MW; on the contrary, it would be a huge ask for a new Manager like him to outsmart a wily old pro like Jackett first time out.

As I'm sure others have noted elsewhere (not had time to catch up), the main thing is not that "we fell off the horse" on Saturday, but rather how well MW motivates the lads to get back up for the forthcoming games.

I remain confident that both he and they have what it takes. :sorted:

Mark Warburton

Well, this is MW's biggest test so far now. When he was appointed I was very surprised that we went for someone with no experience and someone who is so closely linked to MB and the whole BFC set up (excellent set up I must add). My worries were that he may not have the experience and also if it doesn't work out how do we manage it if he is that close to MB, he can't exactly move back "upstairs" can he?
He hit the ground running with a great run of results and a refreshing approach with some great ideas for example leaving 3 up front when defending corners allowing Button to collect the ball virtually unchallenged and keeping the same team and formation every week. It has all gone very well so far, my only slight concern has been around the use of substitutions, either a total lack of them when screaming out for it or too many in one go unnecessarily resulting in disruption to the pattern of play.

I think the next week-ten days will define MW as manager, we have to close down some deals this week to get another forward in to give us a spark that will win the next 2 home games as we could easily slip out of automatic contention. Wolves did some smart business in the window and look like they are not going to let it slip in the next 10 games or so, LO have had several blips but just seem to grind out the home wins with relative ease, the next week or so will crucial to our season as we look like we are running slightly out of steam and ideas. I know it is only 1 defeat but we looked shell shocked after half time versus wolves and yesterday was lackluster, it is almost as if we have forgotten what is it like not to win and are not sure how to pick it up again.

This should be our time and I hope MW is the one to guide us to the promised land.

Mark Warburton

What strikes me is that we seem to favour only the 4-3-3 system and are unable to adapt to something different if it isn't functioning well -- a bit more flexibility in approach could be beneficial.

Assuming MW decided to loan out Logan, that must go down as a major error on his part, though in fairness the signing of Tarkowski is likely to prove a great move.

Mark Warburton

Lot's of people trying to find blame - Logan and Farid have become superheroes - strikers who are failures - McCormack in two positions - the conditioning coach worked miracles - but our record so far is not too shabby.

We need a new face to wake the front 3 up, that's all.
