Orient Match Report

We continue to play high balls up to Donaldson and Grigg, neither of who can jump and invariably it all comes to nothing - why did we do that when they have two centre backs who are very strong in the air? We are the team playing hooifball a lot of the time now, not pretty. Penalty was nailed on - it was just a question of how long the ref was going to allow Logan to cling on to Mooney before he gave it. Don't think Orient were particularly impressive but they were certainly far more dangerous going forward than we were. a very disappointing evening.

Orient Match Report

We had plenty of chances at goal, same old story we weren't clinical enough, most of our chances were straight at the keeper, wasn't our night.
Dean headed wide early on from a Forshaw free kick.
Forshaw had a couple of efforts at goal one straight at the keeper.
Donaldson turned and shot and straight at the keeper.
Cross by Craig met by Fillo again headed straight at the keeper.

Mooney had a good chance to put orient ahead but he headed over.

Second half we started well, 5 minutes in good play, Donaldson turned and 20yards out his one just over the bar. Then Donaldson had an effort at goal deflected for a corner after good work tracking back and winning the ball.
From the resulting corner ball crossed into the box and fell to Craig at the back post who had a shot blocked and go for a corner. From that corner Donaldson header straight at the keeper.

Logan had his arms all Mooney even before he went down, silly penalty to give away, he may have had some of Logans shirt too but it's asking for trouble especially in the box. Lee dived the right way but was a very well placed penalty. Shortly after their 11 had an effort on goal which was going in, Lee made a terrific fingertip save to put it behind for a corner.

We struggled to then create anything, game fizzled out apart from Toumani sideways shot. Lots of running with the ball and passes but we either couldn't break through or lost the ball.

Substitutes struggled and couldn't make an impact on the game. Surprised not to see Farid come on.

Second goal 5minutes from time was the killer, couldn't see a way back.

Forshaw MOTM and rightly so, was everywhere, quality again.
Donaldson had a really good game.
Toumani and Filo both drifted in and out of the game and failed to make much of an impact.
Too many long balls especially to Grigg up in the air, that's simply not his game, much better with the ball into feet, same with Donaldson. If we are to play it in the air then Farid is the man you want/need upfront.

I don't think we quite play hoofball or a passing game, I call it Goofball and it's been created by Uwe.

regardless of style, i was shocked by the poverty of our performance.

we have had horrible luck with injuries and the balance of the side has been affected
but after conceding we lacked passion, hunger, intensity, the will to win.

our second half display was hugely disappointing

on the evidence of last night, promotion is a pipe dream and i fear for rosler's future.

Bottom line is Orient played like a team who would put their bodies on the line for each other and we played like a team of individuals who although more talented man for man than their rivals, looked short on confidence and quality in the vital areas. Most worrying for me was the lack of fight when we went two down where last season we'd have battled to the very end.

absolutely. we have ability but not an ounce of fight

Orient Match Report

We're playing Championship football in League One - just as we did last season. Lots of light, fast technical players who get mullered by Lg 1 defenders. If you look at our full backs and majority of our midfield - almost no-one over 5' 10 or 11 st so will aways get found out if we can't play around them, cos we sure as hell can't play through them.

Great points think Logan is to small and this is why he was grabbing their player for the penalty he was not big enough to use his body without grabbing hold of his arm.

Also agree about league 1 football reference we need to be more direct going at the goal as we're are not good enough to pass it all the way into the goal

Orient Match Report

Orient were the best team to visit us so far. Deserved their win. First time i've ever heard Orient fans make any noise. So would i though if we had won our first eight. Fair play to Orient. Brentford must up their game on all levels if we are to compete.

Orient Match Report

The 2/3 times we got ball into feet to Grigg he did something with it. That's where is strength is, playing with back to goal and bringing others into play plus scoring himself from through balls from midfield. Last night there was far too much long ball dross which is virtually impossible to win, even clayton didn't manage to win any headers last night. There was no real penetration from midfield, it was all too pretty. Donaldson's passing is also abysmal. Grigg keeps the ball and tries to look for a Brentford player, Donaldson either tries a wonder goal or overhits/misplaces a simple pass. Not saying either of them were any good though didn't think he supply from the back 5 was good enough.

Someone mentioned that we just need a striker??!! We have 2 who scored 40+ goals between them plus numerous assists last season - they need a prolonged run of games to gel. Doesn't always happen immediately.

Also all this talk about Farid, Hayes, Norris - reserve and friendly football is a completely different game! Very naive to think otherwise.

Another week with more questions than answers, meanwhile the top three go further ahead of us.It feels stale and predictable, and its very obvious that uwe is not getting the best out of some very decent players, but we don't look capable of stringing wins together. The next two games look very tough and I feel could be season defining, for automatics at least.

We were clearly the better side until the penalty, which you can't blame the referee for giving as Logan was clumsy. We then didn't look like we knew what to do next and I turned off once he brought that bloody ejit on.

Orient Match Report

Jealous of whom exactly. The world beating Orient side? lol

Maybe jealous of a team who are top of the league, have won 8 out of 8, who play matches to win rather than look pretty (which appears to be working for them), AND - im guessing - a much lower budget?

Is Farid not our top scorer in first team football this season?

Orient Match Report

I hate the fact that people actually believe that Orient did a number on us like their cunning game plan was to be dominated for 70 minutes and then get a stupid penalty.

I hate the fact that we lost to a team who technically weren't as good as us in any department.

I hate the fact that our strikers couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo.

I hate the fact that we have a manager who has spent close on ten million quid over two years, yet we won't be troubling the Championship for another two years.

Orient Match Report

Good damn awful performance last night. One step forward, two steps back.

Strange substitutions/tatics again. Dallas for McCormack. Great take away the steel in midfield allowing Orient the space to drive through for their second goal. :nono:

Hoofball to Grigg. The guy needs it to feet to be at his best!

Harlee up front. If we are going to play hoofball Herr Rosler I'd prefer to see Taylor up there!

Dallas needs to take the lead out of his boots.

Farid rather than Trotta, PLEASE :sorted:

If we continue to play hoofball, what is the point of watering the pitch if we aren't going to play it on the deck, unless it's to aid the opposition!

All this about the squad being fitter than ever before after pre-season is b*llocks. Orient were fitter and wanted it more. Lisbee was very clever in backing into Harlee and getting the decision and as for Greg Louganis their No. 10................................................!

No obvious improvement from last season with a bigger budget. I would say on what I've seen so far we have regressed. Our leading scorer can't get on even when we are behind!!! Don't like Trotta every time he goes for a header he ducks I was gutted when Uwe re-signed him after what happened last season. Adam Forshaw can't do it all on his own, at this early stage I can't see us doing anything but only time will tell.

Orient Match Report

I think some are underestimating Orient on here. It's true that we had a couple of excellent chances that we should have scored from (Dean's in particular), but in Odubajo they had a player who offered real penetration, something we were definitely lacking. Their defence was pretty solid, too, and ultimately the longer the game went on, the more our lack of ideas was evident.

Orient Match Report

Don't quite get the point you are making here, even accepting your argument that we were the better side for 70 minutes it desn't matter in the slightest it's semantics we're arguing over. As you point out they are a decent side who defended well, looked lively on the break and are sitting pretty on top of the league after taking three points from Griffin Park with a professional performance. I expected more from us this evening, I expected a better result....I'm sure you did as well?

The point, and the only point I'm making is that contrary to what some think, Orient were not "a class above us" for the entire 90 minutes, nor were they IMO outplaying us before we gifted them a goal.

Orient Match Report

with Craig looking like a fish out of water on the left

He did little wrong in the first half. Even got forward a couple of times and put decent crosses in.

Not sure what you saw to make you post that, mate.

And as for your Dallas comments................ he was awful mate. You, me, any old idiot can stand in the right place. He lost the ball the first three times he got it and, as you say, his crossing was appalling.

Orient Match Report

Dead right. he needs to go out on loan somewhere to see if he can become the player we hope as I don't think he's good enough to be trying to find his way in our team at the moment.

Orient Match Report

Orient were superb at the back and that was with a right-back playing at left-back (Omasusi) and they had a decent threat up front which Bees didn't. They were also able to stick to their game plan because they were never chasing the game, whereas Bees had to try something different once the penalty had gone in. I thought Bees had a good midfield but for all their possession, had no serious outlet on the wings.

A simple 4-4-2 looks the way to go but I don't see a decent left-winger at the club(?) Keep the same back four.....get a left winger in (Lee Cook, Salim Kerkar are a couple of freeby suggestions).....Forshaw & Dave in the middle and McCormack tucked in on the right. Logan can provide extra width with McCormack being tucked in. Up front....any two from 5 but at least in this formation they'd play closer together than Grigg/Donaldson did last night.

PS: Agree with everyone...Forshaw looks a serious talent. He just needs to add a few goals and he'll be worth a bomb. Outstanding prospect.

Orient Match Report

If you think they were a class above us then I suggest you watch the game back - preferably with your eyes open this time :) What they had that we didn't was steel throughout the side. One of our major weaknesses IMO is that we're a little too nice and are susceptible to big strong teams. Orient were just that. Two big centre halves who bullied Grigg and Clayton all game and two experienced strikers in Mooney and Lisbie who put themselves about brilliantly IMO and gave our two centres halves a battle from the first to the last minute.

I know he is only on loan but haven't we just signed a CB who is supposed to be the type of CB that can go toe to toe with a battling forward?

Orient Match Report

The significance of this defeat cannot be underestimated!!! We lost to a club who can barely put a team together,we never really looked like scoring and the substitutes made things worse. Nothing really seems to change. Lots of possession to little effect. Serious serious questions need to be asked and answered."

Orient Match Report

I watched it in a bar on Corfu with 2 Sheffield lads, one was an Owl, the other a blade. The red one told his blue mate how good we are and the best team he saw last season this season so far, he reckons they will give us a game at BL on our showing last nights, I don't know if being there changed the perspective but it was rubbish on the box.

Very rarely do I disagree with you BH but it shows you how people can watch the same game and yet come up with different opinions. Didn't think Craig looked comfortable all night long, throught his distribution was poor throughout and he got skinned for pace frequently. I like Craig, love his commitment and love his attitude but just thought he was poor last night for an experienced player who has played the majority of his career in that position.

Regarding Dallas - yes he was poor last night no disputing that and I am wondering what has happened to him since the confident, exciting performances he put in pre season against Cardiff, Milwall etc. Loss of confidence maybe- I don't know. Reeves has struggled in a similar fashion. Maybe a loan and regular football is required in both instances because I think both players have talent. My point was when we played with some width at least we had the opportunity to get the crosses in- something Fillo didn't get the opportunity to do all evening long.

60-70 minutes of the way through the game, every man and his dog could have told you it wasn't Claytons game last night. He showed some great control but kept giving it away with silly flicks, where have they come from suddenly? Spoils all the hard work.

He stayed on the pitch and we got nothing, Farid has done nothing but score goals in the games he has played. He got sacrificed in one game because Uwe forgot Clayton and him can't play together seemingly. Perhaps Uwe prefers the more flashy players or headline grabbing ones, but Farid does a job and does it well.

CLEARLY not the game for Tex, Dallas wasted every crossing ball and Trotta had one ball at his feet.

Uwe cannot inspire the most talented squad I have seen at half time to push on, and his substitutions/second half tactics were non-existent.

They beat us 2-0 and Cox did absolutely nothing all game. Yes Orient have won every game so far but we were poor second half.

Orient Match Report

In a nutshell.

Orient are better than the sum of their parts.
We are not as good as the sum of our parts.

Our best IX is surely better than theirs.
However we have so many decent players Rosler is not sure yet where to put them all.
There is a lot to be said for playing the same players in their best positions on a regular basis & let them gel.
Orient have just a nineteen man first team squad & they look like a functioning team. Ours doesn't for the most part.

Orient Match Report

Thought we did pretty well first half against a very capable and hard working Orient side. Penalty came when we were just getting on top and looked a needless one to give away. After that we lost our way completely and the second goal was dreadfully poor from a defensive point of view.

I'm afraid that at present we lack metal. The players are undoubtedly talented but you've got to earn the right to play and I thought Orient worked harder than we did to win challenges and get bodies in the way to stop us playing.

I must say as well that once again, the substitutions did more to hinder than help and left us totally shapeless and devoid of any attacking impetus.

Some of the big players from last year have started poorly this season, Clayton especially, and they and the management need to up their game pretty swiftly if we're to start to rein in the early pace setters.

Spot on summary. I am confused and disappointed.

Orient Match Report

This is it in a nutshell agree entirely. A Lower budget but with a manager who gets an ordinary set of players playing to their strengths and with a togetherness and team spirit that is sadly lacking with us at the moment. They looked so much fitter than us as well.

Orient Match Report

We have to face facts we are just not good enough, will be lucky to reach the paly-offs unless something drastic happens.

Get the feeling something just is not right at the club this season, don't know what it is but...............

Orient Match Report

There was a swagger, a willingness to move the ball around, confidence on the ball last season that was glaringly lacking last night. I agree with malbee62, there is something fishy afoot but can't put my finger on it.

Orient Match Report

Yep - they were so clever. What exactly did you see in Orients' play up to the penalty to admire?

What I liked was that they had a clear game plan to get the ball forward quickly, feed off second ball and try and play some football in our final third. It might not look as pretty as us but it was, and going by their results, is clearly more effective.

I also liked the fact they looked like a team and were willing to work hard and put their bodies on the line.

I like the fact that they prove budget isn't everything and team spirit and organisation and desire still count for something.

Otherwise I think they're crap and like so many occasions before I wonder how our expensively assembled team failed to beat them.

Orient Match Report

.....................maybe you've forgotten the much hyped 'hypnosis sessions' of a couple of seasons ago when Richard was saving penalties?- and quite possibly he still isn't properly 'matchfit'....................but the second wasn't that far away from him either - but hopefully you'll note that I did say that both shots/goals were as a result of poor defending, of which he is the last line...................

I don't quite get your point. Even a match fit Peter Schmeichal at the peak of his career wouldn't be criticised for not saving a perfectly placed penalty (and Richard was very close to it) or a well finished one on one. In those situations a keeper might get his defence out of jail by pulling off a save but the percentages are stacked well in favour of the striker.

Orient Match Report

Totally agree with the sentiment here. However, I'll tell you what's wrong, the manager. Mr Rosler thinks he's managing in the Premier league. The substitutions were farcical & disrupted us. When McCormack came off he was shaking his head & I for one think Mr Rosler is losing the dressing room if he's not careful. 3 games we have failed to score in out of 8. Grigg looks lost & contributes nothing. Hayes? Surely he can't be worse than our current non functioning strikers? Top 6, I'm afraid "we're having a laugh" Coventry will be licking their lips at the thought of playing this lot Sunday!! Very depressed following such pre season optimism
We have to face facts we are just not good enough, will be lucky to reach the paly-offs unless something drastic happens.

Orient Match Report

I wonder if the Paul Hayes situation is having some sort of affect on the dressing room, because something clearly isn't right.

Orient Match Report

One thing that really stood out for me last night was the lack of confidence we have in midfield , especially in the centre of the park to shoot . Only Forshaw Looks capable of a goal and sadly Dave's efforts last night were very poor. How many times did we see the ball going sideways when in a dangerous position when we should have been working the keeper. We have a real tendency to 'over cook it' when we really should be pulling the trigger. People on here can say what they like about Martin Rowland's but in his prime he is exactly the sort of player we were crying out for last night.

Orient Match Report

I wonder if the Paul Hayes situation is having some sort of affect on the dressing room, because something clearly isn't right.

I think the players get on well with Hayes, and whatever has happened between him and Uwe has upset a few people.
Maybe theres a lot more to it that us mortals cant see

Orient Match Report

How frustrating was that. Orient played to their strengths, they do what they say on the tin, it is not sophisticated but they play as one unit as a team, everyone knows their job. We have the better individual players imo, but we dont have a team. Even first half, second half felt like it was back in the Andy Scott dark days, I fear for Uwe unless he can turn this around, but tbh I have not seen anything much this season to suggest we will be in the top 6 come May. The penalty was stonewall imo, as soon as a defender puts his hands/arms on the opposing player you give the ref a choice to make, I have no complaints. It is also a sign of desperation when you start blaming the ref, injuries, bad luck etc etc for a defeat. We were ultimately outplayed and 8 games in 12 points and 10 goals against Orient's 24 points and 23 goals does not lie to me. We have not been consistent for some time but last night was not good. IMO Uwe is not getting the best out of his resources simple as that, not sure where he goes from here having brought in numerous players he is no nearer building a team capable of promotion. IMO this has nothing to do with money/budgets but down to management ability, or lack of as the case may be.

Orient Match Report

Orient reminded me very much of a team in the old 1970s Division 4 in many areas. Absolutely no-nonsense defending, long balls and jumps into the player rather than at the ball. However, the forwards they had were excellent. always on the move, aware of where each other was and always looking likely to score. Their winger terrorised our left and then our right and then our left again, and was usually able to put in a really threatening cross.

From our point of view, I thought that Taylor looked pretty good on the whole - the most scary centre-back we've had since Terry Evans but with the build of Mickey Droy.

Although the ref let Orient get away with a fairly physical approach, I thought he was fine - couldn't see the penalty though

Some obvious downs to me:
1) We didn't really look like we thought we could score
2) Clayton is being used in the same way as AS used Robby Simpson - get him against a smaller fullback and then a long ball out to his head.
3) Pitty-patty football needs players making sudden unexpected bursts rather than passing it around in front of the defence
4) If you play a winger and then bring on a winger, you need to have someone like Farid in the middle; Clayton's not bad in the air but doesn't have the anticipation of Farid and
5) Trotta, although he got a couple of shots off really needs to look interested outside the box
6) Grigg at the moment reminds me of Scotty Partridge in the season after we went up, or Charle Mac in his last full season with us - lots of running but no true end-result
7 McCormack looked good in the first half, but overall the midfield were having lots of problems getting second ball - and after he went off we never got it at all.

Orient Match Report

Definitely a penalty. Better team. We played well for most of the match. Hope our hoofball moments didn't stand out too much on the telly. Our squad is too big. Pray for Saint Jonathan and Alagui and frugality. Amen.

Completely agree about Donaldson and Grigg playing far to apart never once really linked up unlike Mooney and Lisbie of Orient.

If you describe a striker who was unable to pass, control the ball, head the ball, shoot - and ultimately unable to score - as having a "really good game", then blimey you're easily pleased!

Orient Match Report

These are worrying times as we have yet to really play except for the Sheffield game and look where they are,on this form we will end up mid table and another season wasted.

Orient Match Report

The balance of the defence is completely wrong, Craig is never a left back and should be moved straight back into the centre with Dean. Taylor was so slow and immobile it was frightening everytime they got the ball on the deck or played the ball in behind him we were in big trouble.

I cant understand what we were doing when Orient had a goal kick or free kick in their own half and were launching it into our box, Dean was standing almost up at the half way line nowhere near the Orient forwards and then at the last minute attempting to back pedal and head it out at the same time. He was misjudging it everytime and it caused the first goal. They had already had loads of let offs from this and kept doing it.

Orient Match Report

Similar story to last season. Dominance in possesion and passages of play but very little to show for it in terms of clear cut chances. It always seems to take us several goes before getting a goal whilst the opposition seem to get a chance and invariably make the most of it.

Frustrated by the manner of the defeat. Orient were a decent side but never really frightened us IMO. Gifted them a very needless penalty. You could argue all day whether it was or wasn't a penalty but you cannot give the ref any reason to give it. Heads dropped after that and the second goal was very very flattering.

Real headaches for Rosler now. He will no doubt shuffle the pack again. We really miss Bidwell and McAleny it seems

Orient Match Report

Looking forward to this game after not seeing them for 3 weeks. Orient played as a team with players putting their bodies on the line. They battled every tackle and completely shut us out in the middle. Why we result to constant long balls when it is obvious it doesn't work baffles me. For me the team is underperforming, WHY WHO KNOWS!!!!

Orient Match Report

You have to wonder as well if Hayes' "treatment" had anything to do with our failure to bring in our targetted players such as McFadzean, who played with Hayes at Crawley....

Orient Match Report

Completely agree about Donaldson and Grigg playing far to apart never once really linked up unlike Mooney and Lisbie of Orient.

I keep saying it, 442 with two good centre forwards and two good centre backs will see you into the championship. Then, you can start playing around with diamonds and christmas trees etc....

Yep ... and not trying to change the whole system during a game. The substitutions, taken as a whole, last night only served to make the situation worse.

I agree 100% about Bidwell and McAleny - Craig doesn't have the skill to adopt an attacking roll and we don't have anybody like McAleny who can play wide with the option of pace with the ability to score goals.

Orient Match Report

I feel I am moving from the “Rosler is still learning but will get it right in time” camp into the “Rosler is unable to harness the talent we have all over the pitch and make an effective team. He has around 12 games to get it right” camp.

Rosler has far more resources at his disposal than probably any previous manager – in terms of player numbers and talent and support infrastructure but we are not playing as a team with loose passing and lack of understanding all over.
Last night we saw poor passing, poor substitutions and a lack of fight. How we could ignore Farid and bring on the lightweight Dallas and Teixeira into a rough, tough game in an attempt claw back two goals I don’t know. Teixeira was clearly not ready for the pace of the game and Orient’s “robust” playing style.

If we are to win anything this season, Rosler must install some steel and improve the understanding/ teamwork. Passing other teams to death will only work if we pass better than we did last night. If we can’t, then at least close the opposition down quickly, tackle hard and play a forward who is good in the air if your game plan is to pump high balls from defence into the opponent’s final third.

How some of our previous managers, operating on a shoestring and a squad of 14 players, would have loved to have the resources available to Rosler last night.
Very disappointing.
