How a ref can give an indirect free kick when the Lino clearly said it was a push

Was as poor as the lino on the BR touchline. Really worried about the standard of refereeing nowadays.

My biggest concern was the amount of time it took for the ref to signal for the stretcher this afternoon. From the Ealing Road, it looked a bad one from the moment our man went down and was immediately signalling. Those are the ones you should be able to call yourself or at least get the stretcher team in readiness.
Second point is the number of hand balls ignored (at least 6) before one was given. Poor stuff.

Thought the ref was OK apart from allowing himself to be conned by the cheating numer 5. However the New road Ginger lino abysmal and unsure he knew the offside law

The linesman on the New road had an absolute shocker.
Missed a clear off side in the run up to their goal, and got nearly everything else wrong.

It can't be the ref's decision to bring on a stretcher. The medical team were carefully assessing Farids injury then they asked for the stretcher. The ref merely signalled for that to happen.

referee Patrick Miller made awful decisions today,the linos wernt much better.the last 3 games the officials have been terrible

Two things I noted...

The back pass.. How can he give a back pass when the keeper didn't pick the ball up? Their defender kicked it at the keeper from about 3 yards and natural reaction was to put his hands up to cover his face as at the same time as the ball coming at him, the defender pushed FEA into him. For it to be a back pass, the keeper has to pick it up...

Following on from that, he originally gave 4 minutes injury time. before FEA injury, he had already played 2 minutes. And when the game re-started he played a further 4 minutes. Surely he plays 2 more minutes from when the game re-starts, not 4?

Was the free kick given for obstruction? The defender blocking FEA to get to the ball before the keeper?

Agreed. Forte was at least a yard offside, and the lino just wasn't up with play. He missed so many other things but seemed oblivious to the abuse from us in NR. Do linos get assessed like refs? If so 1/10 would be generous.

One thing that annoyed me was their number 5 lead with his elbow on Harry and got away scott free. One of the most blatant offences and the ref missed it. He was very out of his depth today

I take it you have never played the game? Also as a ref, you should know the rules. The bloke tried to dink it back to his keeper, who put his arms out, and handled it with both hands. Could not have been a much clearer free kick!!

I was watching on tv in hospitality.. from that view it looked like he palmed it away from a kick that was yards away from him. You could.not say whether he did it to protect himself from harm or to basically stop it.. plus with fea approaching the keeper was probably also reacting to again protect him - naturally with his hands.

And what has me playing the game got to do with it. Yes I've played the game and still do.

I was right behind it in ER. the defender clearly intended to pass it back to Jones but he also rushing out to intercept and it was his reaction to palm it away. The keeper does not have to pick it up, the fact that he merely played it with his hands should be enough to warrant an ID free kick

So far this season in 7 games he has sent 2 players off and has a reputation for being a bit card happy, although nothing like Brendan Malone.

He will be assisted by John Scott of Buckingham & William Bull of Woolston. Scott last lined here in the 0-0 draw with Walsall last season. He is a Blue Square South ref, although i dont think he does this often. Bull hasnt lined a Bees game for a few seasons now.

4th official. Nicholas Kinseley of Wickford.

Unfortunately todays referee is Trevor Kettle of Whissendine in Rutland, which seems a tad close to Scunthorpe if you ask me. He has one of the poorest reputations amongst referees in the FL since being appointed in 2003. Known as the 'Whistling Kettle' due to his fondness of the referees tool!! Described as over zealous. So far this season has given a minimum of 2 cards per match. The Bees have to be careful today!

The last time we saw him was in the 3-0 defeat at home to Southampton in April 2011, before that it was...

13 Apr 2010 2-2 draw at Southend.

15 Aug 2009 0-0 draw at home to Brighton

21 Oct 2008 2-1 win at home to Morecambe

9 Feb 2008 1-1 draw at home to Shrewsbury

16 Sep 2006 goalless draw at home to Bournemouth

21 Mar 2006 3-2 defeat at Gillingham where he sent off 2 Gills players

14 Aug 2004 1-0 home win over Wrexham

14 Oct 2003 the penalties win over Barnet in the JPT or whatever it was called then when he sent off Ben May as well

The linos todays are Stephen Ross of Boston and Duncan Street of Wakefield. Ross ran the line in the infamous 1-1 draw at Notts County last season and refs in both Blue Sq North & South. Street, I dont think has lined a Bees match before since being appointed in 2010. He tends to concentrate on being a linesman rather than reffing at a Northern Premier League level.

The 4th official is Ricky Wootton also of Wakefield. Must be a car sharing scheme going on or something!

Kettle is dangerous IMO. I have sen him do fine but he also seems to have games when he books everybody and that inevitably ends with a red card or two. Treat with care. Highly combustible!

I am not sure that is correct mate, I believe the keeper has to pick it up to warrant a back pass or to deliberately pat it into his own path. Making a save from an over hit back pass I do not believe constitutes a back pass. As always, I am prepared to be wrong.

The keeper can use any part of his body to receive & clear a "back pass" but not his hands. Whether its saving, parrying or picking up the ball.

Man in the middle at Donny is Andy Haines from Sunderland - not got many good reviews but then that is typical of many refs at our level !

Pretty much spot on there. He was appointed to the League list in 2007 and has yet to send anyone off this season. For those with memories who previously reffed Bees games in...

20 Aug 2011 the 5-0 win over Orient.

29 Mar 2011 the amazing 3-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday.

Opening game of 2010-11 the defeat at Carlisle.

15 Nov 2008 the 3-0 win at Port Vale, where he also sent off a Vale player.

So to recap. 4 games where we won 3 scoring 11 goals and 3 against. Maybe a ref who hasnt got an amazing reputation but a good one for us. Lets hope it continues!

Linos are Ollie Yates of Stoke-on-Trent & Nick Greenhalgh of Bury. Yates last ran the line in a Bees game at Notts County when Jeff Schlupp scored a last minute equaliser. I dont think Greenhalgh has ever done a Bees game before.

4th official is Ian Dudley of Mansfield.

Thats the problem of me being a stats man, you dont get the narrative! I honestly dont remember this, a bit like most of what went on during this period of Bees history, e.g. I dont remember Moore now of Wimbledon playing for us at all. Was the postponement the right decision, football-wise?

Absolutely ! the pitch was totally unplayable and should have been called off long before the match officials arrived. There was lying water all over the pitch and what looked like tractor marks at edge of penalty area (good for planting spuds!).As Accrington knew we were taking loads of fans up there they realised it would be a good payday for them and did not want to miss out.Referee took one look at the pitch and immediately called it off - totally correct decision.

Oh yes the Accrington pitch. Never stands up well to winter and ends up looking like a ploughed field. Sounds like the local ref should have called the game off before anyone else got there including Bees fans and ref Haines.

I believe (if my memory serves me correct) that Accrington did not even bother calling in a local ref as they really wanted game to go ahead.

Ref for Tuesday night v Coventry is Keith Stroud from Hampshire - 5 foot nothing and suffers with little man syndrome ! Seen him have some good games but also just as many shockers. Interesting that one of the assistant refs is Graham Horwood from Bedfordshire who up until recently was a league referee but now on Conference duties - must be bad if he couldn't hack it in the league judging by the standards set by many of those seen at GP. (and elsewhere).

Horwood was referee at GP the season before last when we drew 1-1 (Sam Saunders free kick) with Colchester under Nicky Forster's short reign as boss.

Tomorrow's referee is David Phillips from Chichester who officiated his first ever game in the League in 2008 when he reffed Brentford v Grimsby.He comes from Chichester in West Sussex and is ,like quite a few other refs, a policeman.

Completely agree...

Not saying I agree with booking players, but its there to stop the game from getting out of control. Hartlepool players were giving plenty of heavy fouls away and no bookings. Remember just before Forshaw got booked their guy made a shocking tackle and not even a word...

That always gets up my nose too. The last time Phil Dowd was taken down a peg or two he ended up at GP to prove he was hopeless at League one level as well.

Weird as Stroud has on occasions been atrocious when in charge of us - remember away lost against Wycombe when he sent off James Wilson, gave them a pen and fouls for any sort of contact. It was Chesney vs them and he performed miracles to keep the score down but Stroud was abysmal. By the same token I thought he was excellent Tuesday, handles the game sensibly, let it flow didn't rush around dishing out cards and the players seemed to be able to talk to him, maybe he's improving like Atwell who was also impressive a few weeks back.

Oh FFS........... How many times? .......there is no policy to demote refs as "punishment", it DOES NOT HAPPEN. Most/all/some refs will do some lower league games in a season and there has been one or two coincidences where a ref who has had a bad game appears in Lg 1 and when it happens this nonsense starts up again.

As a test, see which of the prem refs from Saturday appear in our division next week.

Yes Rob Lewis of Shrewsbury officiating Saturday. Rejoined the League list in 2010 after previously being a League ref between 2005-2008 when injury ruled him out for a couple of years although he never reffed a Bees game in this time. He did ref 2 Bees games last season and already 1 this season..
