Rico Henry

Well for one at least Kayode matches him for pace in our back line, so not sure you can say that he has something the others don’t.

Ultimately though it’s not about “looking pretty dribbling” it’s about his ability to work in our system. We are not playing a passive, low block, direct, counter-attack style. We need players across the team that can help us play out of a press, retain possession under pressure and help us create chances against sometimes very compact defences. I am sorry but that is not Rico.
Kayode is a RB, it’s not even related. Liverpool just signed two fast powerful fullbacks who aren’t pretty footballers, they just run forwards and cross. Kayode looked very sloppy on the ball yesterday and almost injured himself while dribbling. His pace and power saved us a couple of times but he still got skinned one and one a few times that lead to dangerous crosses. We’re not going to pass through low block organised teams, you need runners and balls in behind or crossed.

Prem is full of fast powerful wide men, I know who I want defending them.

Rico Henry

So close that England were picking almost anyone BUT him for that position, including centre halves and right-backs. Hm. Per @Banana I don’t think Southgate was ever interested.
He was injured when the two ahead of him were also injured, so we';ll never know.

I understand the point you are making, in a similar way Ethan suffered from the move to a more possession based style immense defender though he is. Rico is a fantastic defender although his 'achilles heel' - if you can call it that- was his final ball or cross. Incredibly early days so let's see how Rico adapts this season. We have options now which is a nice place to be.

Rico Henry

He moved up to be level with the 3 other Brentford players to play him offside, sadly Collins dropped deep and played him on just as the cross came in. Wasn’t caught napping, he moved on purpose.
Looking back at the game which I recorded, this is exactly the case.

Correct, Pinnock is also not good enough on the ball unfortunately. He was once again not in the matchday squad with a “knock” as it was for all of pre-season, and it’s the wrong thread for that but I am not sure he gets back in.

With Rico it’s not just the lack of a consistent, quality, final ball or cross, it’s the inability to engage in buildup across all thirds of the pitch. Receive in tight areas, keep hold of the ball, beat the press, break through lines, find the right penetrative pass.

Too many times yesterday I saw us caught by their press, or waste promising transitions, when he was involved, because of these limitations. These are not always glaring defensive mistakes but there is a lost opportunity cost; we often end up ceding possession, moving 10 yards deeper, or not turning good situations into goalscoring chances.

Rico Henry

Other players are ‘limited’ as they don’t have his pace or aggression when defending one on one, his burst of pace created the two best chances when he had zero support from anyone. I’d rather a LB have pace and energy than look pretty dribbling. Arsenal played a CB who is solid at Old Trafford but not silky on the ball over Skelly.

Digging out Rico in a performance where he was one of the few who showed energy and aggression is odd, every player on the pitch was awful on the ball.

KLP got yanked off last year at Forest as he was getting destroyed, something that wouldn’t happen to Rico.
Absolutely right. This was a player making his first start in about 18 months since injury, a left-back who drove us forward more than KLP and Carvalho combined. He was the only one who got beyond their defence (even if it was just once), created our first real chance, and won the first two corners (if I remember correctly). I’m not sure what more he could have done in this game without the support of the forward players ahead of him, who were missing. As for their second goal, I’m not even sure he was caught napping as some people have suggested on here. Looking back, it seemed like Collins played the scorer onside. Nevertheless, even if Rico was at fault, surely that has to be expected while he’s still regaining sharpness. Yes, his touch and a few passes were rusty, and that awful tired-legged cross before he was subbed wasn’t great , but come on, that’s to be expected after such a long layoff, at least to me. Some of the comments on here are comical, especially considering there were at least six or seven players who were worse in this game. I am confident that Rico will definitely improve as he regains match fitness also sharpness and will keep his place in the side. Any bets anyone?

Exactly. He was certainly rusty yesterday, with a few hesitations defending that an up-to-speed Rico would’ve done instinctively and, although he got forward quite a bit, his output when there was minimal… but there was no real support from him and his best attacking is when he can lay the ball off, which only Jensen seemed to notice.

Rico Henry

Can you please let us know what you base that on, as Southgate is reported to have said that due to Rico’s indifferent final ball in the attacking third he never considered him for selection.
I think it came from the GPG!

Rico Henry

Just on Rico and England. I was and remain as big a fan of him as ever, but it did strike me when we borrowed Sergio from Tottenham, how much better he was than Rico when going forward. This to me simply illustrated where Rico needed to put some more effort in because I think his defence was as good as any.

Rico Henry

Showed his value yesterday off the bench was so aggressive and quick to close down basically shut down any threat from his side of the pitch.
Still has a key role to play , but injuries permitting it will be largely off the bench in scenarios like yesterday, although away to the big boys I’d still think he has a chance of starting as defensively he’s so good.
We certainly have strength in depth at fullback.

I think if we have a really high quality winger in the opposition (eg Salah) Rico would start.

Rico Henry

No hes not at all not sure why people are writing Rico off ?
Why is it that if someone has a slightly different view about a player, then you're writing him off. KLP offers far more than Rico going forward and deserves to keep his place as a wingback. Rico's downfall has always been his final ball.
However, I take Les's point in that he might keep his place for games against the likes of Liverpool who have a world class winger like Salah. Purely because 90% of his game will be defending

This.

Rico isn't written off at all, it's KLP has overtaken him in that position.

I personally think Rico has understandably lost a bit of his pace through that injury. Pace was his biggest weapon so clearly he's not going to be as effective as he was.

In the 3-3 Rico had that role and shepherded Salah excellently when last man back. The risk for Rico now is that Kayode has taken that role. Rico’s pace is less of a USP for him within the starting team for the general left side defending duty outside of protecting against fast counters.

I missed the Liverpool home game last season. Were either of their late goals ones that having Rico over KLP would have helped with?

What I find amazing is KLP gets so much praise for what Rico does consistently, he’s a better defender and better at making off the ball runs and charging forwards. People praising KLP yesterday but he attempted two passes until he was moved to LW, then he got ball more. KLP has to get involved more in general play, he gets so lost in games and I have no idea why.

People see what thy want to see, Rico makes a ton of forward runs in the game and always offers an outlet.

Rico Henry

He really made the difference yesterday mate unbelievable and that dribble past 3 players
what’s your agenda against yarmo, anyways this is a rico henry thread, no one is writing him off but the statement that KLP is better than him is subjective and completely fair.
there’s a difference in saying someone’s sh*t and someone’s behind another player.

No agenda just dont rate him as much as most on here no crime in that ... a fully fit Rico is a nailed on starter

Yep, same time it's only been 2 games, loads of the season left. Part of my wonders if he'd be an incredible CB too!

Oh no.....?

This is my pet hate....?

Man plays well, move man to where he is not needed ?

Please, we have no need to wonder at the moment ?

I missed my other question, are we dropping Nathan or Sepp? ???

Rico Henry

Ajer at CDM is a crazy idea. We will get injuries this year and players will have to move around. Having options is good.

Yeah, we know ?

However, they live among us ?

He played there when he was 17 or some other b***ocks ?

Don't forget KLP did an excellent job on Salah at home last season. Not a shoe in for Henry anymore imo, which can only be good.
… and, if AFCB fans are to be believed, Dango was excellent at LB for them in his games in the position… so now we’ve got 4 contenders for one role that I think will be Rico’s once he’s been eased up to full match fitness.

*see how I eased that back to topic.

No sure, horses for courses.

That doesn’t make sense to me - I think KLP is better in all departments than Rico now.
And there is plenty of room for improvement. Whilst I hope Rico can get back the level he was playing at before the injury he not going to get better at this stage of his career.

Rico Henry

In a PL squad the term automatic choice is only for a few.

Rico must be realistic, the injury he suffered changes careers and the fact he’s playing PL level, proves what a great athlete he has.

This season, many more minutes but not an automatic choice is fine, interchanging this position with KLP means no weakness at all.

Two good players in one position and Hickey for fun as well. Rico wants to play no doubt but you would think he’s a realist and knows after so long out, the team has evolved and him playing some minutes is better than no minutes at all.

Rico Henry

He's still the best LB LWB at the club IMO.

KLP was class last season but Rico is still better regardless of this end product chat. Of which BTW KLP is actually not that great at either FWIW.

If he gets back to his best, yes, which I doubt after that injury. Right now KLP deserves to start.
