Did he do anything that made him stand out above the others?

Why? He's shown very little when he's come off of the bench, only thing he's done of note is give a penalty away at Sunderland.

It’s interesting, he started the first game of the season at Forest but in hindsight that might have been more to do with KLP being needed further forward in that game, and Hickey being “eased” back into PL football from the bench.

Since that Forest game, in fairness to Rico he’s had a couple of awesome games in the league cup - and been good off the bench. But even then, both KLP and now Hickey have both been preferred as the starting LB/LWB.

Must be frustrating for him - because you can’t fault his recent performances but I feel KA does not see him as a starter.

Someone’s going to be disappointed when we’ve 4 high quality players for 2 places.

Whenever I watch Rico play, he gives me this joy. Of realising where we’ve come from, because he just gets us & been there from the start. Such a good player also can’t believe he never got called up for England before injury.

Hrs unlucky to have such intense competition but I suspect Hickey will turn out to be the preferred lb. Tough on KLP too.

Must admit I'm a bit surprised by Rico's place in the pecking order. Seems to be no better than third choice left back now. I thought he was at an incredibly high level before his injury and has been improving since his return. He had Bryan in his pocket when he came on against United. I'd be very disappointed if he has to go elsewhere for regular football as I think having a naturally left-footed LB is always the preferred option for me.

I wouldn't look on it as third choice, more horses for courses. Would not be surprised to see him starting on Saturday.

I'd be fine with him starting against Salah but I'd be surprised if Ajer is left out after yesterday. Anyway it's a nice problem to have. Depth of squad is best it's ever been.

The problems he has are that apart from his weak attacking output his decision-making isn’t yet back to what it was, the PL has become much more generally physical at set pieces so small players can get tempted into fouling bug guys (eg penalty at Sunderland) and his role as pacy last man back at corners has been taken by Kayode.

Still in contention for Liverpool but I think now no longer the nailed on starter he used to be in all circumstances and set ups. That’s probably not going to change going into the future, even if he performs well enough to get good runs of starts. Whereas it’s hard to see KA dropping Kayode for tactical reasons regardless of opposition.

Salah has looked poor this season. This is probably why Liverpool aren’t firing as they have in the last few seasons. He usually chipped in when they needed a goal.
I think we need to have a right go at them. Another Man City style first half isn’t going to be acceptable.

I wasn’t suggesting he isn't any good. It’s just that the role of a full back in the Premier League has changed a lot recently and I’m not sure that he’s got those other attributes.

At 29 his choice may be staying as a squad player or being a regular at Birmingham or WBA in the Championship. It seems nowadays few promoted clubs are buying players of that age for their experience unless several levels above in quality too (eg Kyle Walker at Burnley). This season is the one where he has to demonstrate an unarguable and consistent case independent of past performance for being a PL regular against the competition we have for the position.

Over the course of the season we know we will get the inevitable injuries - he will be back in the starting 11 before long - very valuable squad member I would class him as - a lot like Pinnock these days

Just shows how good/deep the squad is now that a fully fit Rico is not a guaranteed starter. KA has a job on his hands keeping the squad all happy and involved (and I reckon he is managing this pretty well so far).

The difference is that Pinnock is well into his 30s and past his best. Henry is still getting back to his best after serious injury but he may well reach that level again.

We have an abundance of talent in defence to choose from right now and I would like to think it's horses for courses, I have always liked Rico and was gutted when he got injured (again) but he's come back again and I'm sure he will at some point be back in the starting 11, in place of who though is the burning question right now

Given the proliferation of inverted wingers in this lg, t'was only a matter of time before the inevitable roll-out of counter-inverted fullbacks.

I'd hazard a guess that 80%+ of Saka and Salah's end product and consequential goal threat is from cutting/passing inside.

Has its drawbacks in terms of possession in the build-up though, so a naturally left-footed FB still has a role against the non-elite PL sides.

He would be a useful squad player for a number of PL clubs but not sure hed be a starter at many?
