MBS, Roerslov, Tariq or Vitaly. I wouldn't mind seeing the latter out of that lot when Norgaard is fit and back in the holding role.
Would prefer Janelt and Norgs in a 4 man mf personally, Reid, Henrick and Ethan back 3. Might compensate more for loss of Rico's attacking threat.

Tariq maybe but prefer him up top.

Jigsaw puzzle or what. Imagine TF has a proper migraine brewing.

Rico Henry

Fosu or Janelt isn't a bad shout, once Norgaard is back of course. Not sure Sorensen has the pace of full back to suit our style at all to be honest.

Roerslev or Tarique tomorrow, see after that...

Rico Henry

I know Fosu has been decent as RB in games, but I don't remember him playing LB.

Think Fosu might start up front personally. My money on MBS or Roerslov tomorrow night.

Rico Henry

I'd back Roerslev to take the position, certainly until Nørgaard can play 90 minutes, then Janelt could take in on, leaving Dalsgaard (or Roerslev) to play the more advanced full back from the right.

Rico Henry

This news is such a choker for us and Rico.

I hope the recovery goes to plan and someone takes the opportunity to step up in his absence.

Rico Henry

Well we are about to find out if we have adequate cover for Rico, one thing id for sure we wont be able to leave just one player back for corners

Rico Henry

Not sure I get the clamour for Janelt playing there, doesn’t strike me as particularly quick for the overlap etc.
The overlap responsibility would go to the right side. For the last year, Dalsgaard has held back and allowed Henry to go forward, effectively holding a back 3. Time to let Henrik off the leash.

Rico Henry

Every cloud ?
Indeed. Sometimes when a manager's hand is forced to do something he wouldn't otherwise have done, someone unexpected can come to the fore. I have no idea who that player may be or the position, but sometimes, youth can be the way forward. Inexperience can be costly, but youth can be immune to nerves and pressure. Step forward Mr. Pressley. I reckon he would be a handful for quite a few defenders if he put himself about a bit.

Rico Henry

Been dreading reading this thread since Saturday and that is just the news I didn't want to hear. Not back until early May then at the earliest. Feel gutted for Rico. Get well soon

Rico Henry

Massive blow that he’s injured for a couple of months. Sublime player 9/10 every game imo. Surprised he didn’t pick up a injury earlier I feel we’ve really overused him mainly this season considering his injury woes in the past. Why we didn’t sign cover in January was a bit daft even more so considering we sent out Thompson on loan our only other sensible LB option....

Why is Sorensen not a sensible LB option?

Also, I hate to find fault with our players but Henry wasn't on top form in the few games before his injury.
I'd say he was 8/10 this season, with the occasional 6/10.

Rico Henry

Oh we have cover now cause we beat a poor Sheffield Wednesday team?
Nope
We have cover because we have Mads Bech Sorensen
I'm sure Janelt could play there, too.
Maybe Norgaard's imminent return could see this happen?

Rico Henry

He is a massive blow there’s no doubt he’s one of our most consistent players. Very rarely has a bad game and even when he’s not at his best he’s he’s still better than most LB in the division. This is when I think a loan would of been a good option, Thompson wasn’t ready and needs to be playing every week so Swindon was a good move. We haven’t another player in the club who can offer genuine competition. Even a fit Rico couldn’t play every game so could of rotated, even if it meant bringing him off after 60-70 mins.

Mads is a centre back, there is no getting away from that. He will cover and do ok I’m sure, and I’m sure there will be games when everyone will be saying he’s too slow and doesn’t offer anything going forward. He did ok against Sheff Wed, but let’s be honest they don’t offer much. I think he will struggle against the better wide players in the division, Rico didn’t. And I’m not doubting Mads ability but he is a CB the same way Janelt is a CM. We will do what we can in the situation and we are where we are but it is a case of square pegs in a round holes.

Yeah, I think it’s unlikely MBS is going to get stranded in the other penalty area for a breakaway attack from open play.

Heretically, I think Dalsgaard is a better crosser, or at least a more consistent one than Henry so if as with the SW game he goes forward while MBS stays back, we might fare better than expected. Mbeumo might also get more support on the overlap than when Henrik had to hold position in defence more.

Where would we get a loanee of sufficient quality to offer genuine competition to Rico? Someone of that quality who was willing to join us and not be a guaranteed starter?
In a way the signing of Reid freed up Sorensen to move to left back.

Didn't we try that against Blackburn?

We have a squad for a reason. We will use the quality players we have, and I'm sure they will prove perfectly capable. They will not be able to replicate Rico - he is probably the best left back in the Championship, but I believe they will do a perfectly good job for us, and that we will tailor our game to compensate for Rico's absence. :hat:

Sorenson pinged in a fantastic cross from the left wing the other day, can't remember who it was against, so if he does get forward don't be surprised if he picks up an assist or two.. We won't be leaving him back on his own for our corners though!! (I hope!!)

WOW WOW WOW. Rico has played the last 79 out of 80 games for us before his injury, where he has put in a 7-8/10 performance's 100% of the time and all you can remember is the last two games he played. Anyone with half a brain would consider that to be fatigue creeping into his performances in the way of mistakes, included the unlucky penalty he gave away at Coventry which in my opinion he was the best player on the pitch and looked the most dangerous player for us up until his injury, or did you not watch the game? Correct me if I am wrong, Rico has the most appearance's this season up until his injury. He had played every single championship game last season and after a very short break between, has played every game this season bar one.

I think what we really should be worried about is; has Rico played his last game for us and to keep him we will need to get promoted without him.

Rico Henry

WOW WOW WOW.
With respect, I think you're over-egging this one. He's a good, incredibly consistent performer and, as you wrote and like most of our players, he looked a bit exhausted in the games prior to his injury. He's not João Cancelo, though.

agreed, we had a lot of issues from the left side in particular from Barnsley game on.

Is it bad that I have no idea who this is? Only really watch Brentford nowadays.

Did I say he was? but you never know only time will tell. At a premiership club especially bottom half clubs you have time to develop and practice on your weaknesses with individual coaches, this is where I believe he will develop fourfold hopefully with us, In the Championship you don't have that privilege, you play, rest, play then rest and so on, add to that the squad never had a proper preseason or rest time so it's like they will have been playing for a season and half after the first lockdown, but hey; you know what people will say, 'that's what they get paid for'.

You could say that about any of our players though? If we lost Toney we would all be saying how terrible it is, would you say he’s not Harry Kane though? The thing is it’s about our team and the position we are in, Henry is the best LB in this league and a massive part of our team. I don’t think it’s being over-egged at all.

The highest-rated left back in our division this season has consistently been Omar Richards of Reading, similarly aged at 23. Lots of rumours that he's agreed to join Bayern Munich. January, it was Barry Douglas (Blackburn Rovers) but he's 31. (WhoScored)

Henry is stil a massive part of our team, though.

Rico Henry

He's out of the picture and we have moved on with MBS . We are different now and MBS brings his own benefit to the side. We have more height at the back now and are defensively stronger in that respect particularly against all set pieces and we get a lot of ball directly into the box from long throws. Our style is different on the left but no less effective IMO.

Highest rated by who? Henry is better than Richards, Bayern want him as depth because he's out of contract and will be relatively cheap. Bryan Riemer in his interview said Henry will play for a top six club and I make him right.

You think that Bayern Munich look at out of contract Reading players because they don’t cost a lot?

It's a back up full back. He's good but Rico is better.

QED. How many Championship left backs have you heard of, let alone looked at the various rankings? Our players are good but the only Brentford player topping this season's rankings in their respective position is Toney, who also is top of the lot. We play as a team, we play to individual strengths and we cover individual weaknesses.

Yes we are stronger as a unit with balls into the box but we shouldn't forget Rico's amazing recovery pace and reading of a game. The fact we leave him 1v1 on corners speaks volumes about his defensive strengths. MBS is yet to come up against a wide man with attributes that give Rico a tough time.

True, though flipping it round, we take a bet on Rico being able to beat attackers for pace even with a head start so open ourselves up more for counters. We might be more solid if set up to not provide the opening for counters in the first place. Rico is good enough to let us take that bold approach but there probably isn’t another defender in the division who is (which is why Sky commentators note how we just leave him back alone, nobody else does or can).

Agree. But with the loss of Rico will we now lose a threat and option going forward? I know HD can push on down the right.

Agree. But with the loss of Rico will we now lose a threat and option going forward? I know HD can push on down the right.
For sure Rico is a big miss in both directions. But not as huge as we perhaps thought initially because HD can take the attacking FB role he had and MBS can do the defending FB role HD had. Both maybe slightly less well than when we had Rico available, but only slightly. There are also possibly arguments that HD is a better and more consistent crosser, Bryan will be helped by HD being further upfield more than Sergi was by having Rico, and MBS more solid tucking in as effectively a third CB when run at than HD was (eg MBS and Ethan might be better at cutting out tricky wing play than HD and Ethan on his weaker foot, Reid commanding enough to cut a lot out alone).

I think opponents, knowing how good Rico is, might also get lulled into thinking we are now weak on the left and putting their efforts that way. That may open up the other side for us. It’ll be really interesting to see how we deal with this v Norwich as Aarons is probably the best RB and from the Wycombe game, I think their LB is one Bryan would enjoy running at. If we can make a decent fist of that game I’m not sure there are any other teams who’ll pose a greater threat. IIRC in the home game their deflected equaliser came from play on our left.

Kadeem Harris must be one such troublesome winger. Mads Bech did ok there. One area that must be of more concern is the attacking threat offered by Rico whilst still able to put the burners on to defend. The offensive threat offered by Mads Bech will largely be in the form of his colossal throw in, occasional sweeping passes and his aerial presence in our opponents box. Not a hopeless trade by any means.

Rico Henry

Rico's injury probably resulted from our over-dependence on him, in my view. He was beginning to look a bit slower. Other players can compensate going forward and between the midfield and the younger LBs, can keep it fairly solid. It would be a bonus to get him back before April's end.
