That's the primary point about Sergi – there’s no way Spurs will loan him to the point he leaves on a free, so, if we really want him, we’ll need to buy and also offer him a decent contract, too. Personally, given Rico’s persistent injury issues, we may need to do that… unless, of course, there’s another left back in process.
I think if we get in a new LB it also rather means we don’t see Rico as our first choice there any more. He’ll have to not only get fit but win that place back.

Rico Henry

Reguilón should be available cut price. He’s out of contract at season end so Levy will have to take what he can get and remember Sergio can refuse any move that doesn’t suit him knowing he just has to sit tight until season end. A lot depends on whether we really want him and whether he would be interested in a permanent move to us. He came last time to put himself in the shop window hoping for a move to a bigger club. But who knows, maybe his experience with us could lead to him being interested. I simply cannot see him being loaned out.
He’s apparently trying to get his contract settled by mutual agreement at the end of the calendar year so he can move on.

A 6 month contract with us would put him back in the global shop window for the season after

He’s zero choice right now and for the immediate future, the Club has to make a decision right now to have something in place for January. We can’t cross fingers and hope any more.

Can't seem him doing that as he'll risk injury now for a 6 month deal. I imagine he'll wait till the summer and get a big sign on fee somewhere

Thomas has as good as said we will aim to sign a LB/FB in January - whether that is a loanee or permanent, who knows. And to me, that means the ultimate optimist, TF, is not at all convinced we will have a fully fit Rico for a long while yet. I'd still rather we had got someone in back in August, as a number said at the time, but the clock can't be turned back.

Rico's return has already ended up being pushed back 3-4 months. We have to assume that could be pushed back even further so just can't go on playing without recognised full-backs. Even when he comes back, there is no guarantee he will have the same blistering pace, nor that he might break down again.

It's clear that TF doesn't believe that Meghoma is ready for the PL yet, so he needs to find another way.

Rico Henry

He did NOT say that. Re-read it.
I said 'as good as'. Not literally.

He said if he knew in August what he knew now, he would have signed a LB then. Along with his comments over no fixed date for return now, I've chosen to interpret that as we will be very likely to be in the market for a LB.

That's exactly where we are. I don't think we have any option but to sign a first team left back in January. If Henry eventually returns and finds some form and fitness then we will simply have two players vying for one position. What luxury! I could live with that.

Rico Henry

I'm still miffed that recruitment

Does beg the question why Meg was brought in at all if he was off PL level. If we do get another player in Jan who is , where does that leave him when rico returns? There wont even be space for him on the bench.

Have you not been paying attention to our recruitment?

Take a look at the comments of Phil Giles after the summer transfer window:

“We’ve invested in young players, now it’s about giving them an opportunity to step forward to develop”

“It’s quite a young squad now with Jayden, Gustavo and Fábio – I could name a few.

“So, it’s not all about going out and buying a load more players in January or next summer. How do we develop these players and how can they take us to the next level?”

Presumably he became available and we didn't want to not sign him

He’s not even 19 until June, he’s younger than half our B team. If we do get a left back in January, unlikely unless Rico still isn’t back, it’ll be a loan. Meghoma’s got loads of time.

I have paid attention and getting players in for the future is important. Problem is we also needed PL ready players that could make an impact in games now.

Yes, quite. It's a balancing act. No point in shaving a strong production line of players good to go three years hence if we struggle in the meantime. Someone like reguillon even if only on loan would buy time for the development of young stars.

Sending our injured players to Ivan now!

Clearly the club have a policy of paying big money for very young prospects. Providing a good percentage of such players develop on then such a policy will pay a massive dividend in 2/3 years time. It is the excitable posters on GPG who elevate these young men to a status they currently do not have, and the club do not expect them to have.

Megs is having to wait for that rare coincidence this season, a comfortable lead and/or a clean sheet, to come on for his debut….

The club has been run for at least a decade on the basis of looking into the medium to long term. At no point in that journey have they taken fright at short term issues like poor runs of results and they’ve kept faith in the manager to achieve over a season or longer with what he has. We have very rarely bought or loaned anyone for immediate impact (Reguilon last season and Lossl in 21-22 are about the only ones since promotion). Even the big recruitment of summer 19 was not a knee jerk but the planned refresh after keeping faith with the 18-19 squad and working out what was needed as an upgrade, paid for with one big sale, and involved buying a set of players who were all developed to form the core of today’s squad.

As this is Rico’s thread, it’s worth remembering we didn’t buy him as a player ready to go straight in because he came to us injured.

We’re following the wrong club if we want or expect it to go out and buy players just for the here and now.

Of course it’s frustrating as fans to see that if we had we might be in the top 3. But let that sink in, what we’re actually doing has us already performing even with many absentees at a level just shy of a CL push. Maybe it’s an approach that will deliver that but just a little more slowly than right away.

So after his 10 minutes the entire coaching stall will suddenly be in thrall at his expertise and skill that he will forever after fill the left back position. Yes, I refer you to my previous post and add that patience is required. We have many young men currently waiting for a brief interlude to make an appearance. Trevitt, Meghoma, Konak, Maghoma, Cox, the Icelandic lad, Nuness, and Yarmiluke (doing rather better), plus Carma (on loan)

Yes, others have had minutes this season. I guess Megs time will come…

Yes, I think most of us would broadly agree with that. But it's a balancing act isn't it? You need to take care of both the "here and now" and the future. Because if the here and now goes off the rails too badly there might not be much of a future for the young stars on the production line to enjoy.

Having at least one recognised full back fit and available over a twelve to eighteen month period sounds like taking reasonable care of the here and now to me.

So, no update at all, just some "insight" into the terminology behind TF's "squad for the weekend" updates.

Don't let Rico read the bit about KLP being the best left back in England :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Hope they are picked on0 the same side in the first training match otherwise I see another injury upcoming one way or the other.....

Hickeys out for the season, so I’d hope he’s back before him ? seemed like a bit of a weird comment to me

Rico Henry

News from TF is that a replacement wing back is not essential in Jan. We have a number of people who can fill that role already in the team. Problem is that our main wing back replacement Ajer, is constantly injured. That leaves KLP and SVB to continue playing out of position. Means as things stand we will most likely wing it for another season.

I suspect Rico will be ready by January listening to TFs recent comments - however this is dependent on him not suffering further setbacks

Unless you've read something different to me his recent comments are that he will be ready when he tells us he is. Meaning he has no real idea.

The actual quote is “full back”"

He said he is going well from my recollection but clearly after previous setbacks I can understand him being cautious about raising fan expectations. Oh and you have misquoted the latest comments - TF didn't specify LB as an area to address but fullback in general which is obvious when we are missing both first choice and Hickey likely to be out for most of the season.

He would say that. It means other clubs don't think we're desperate in the transfer market, and it's a show of faith in players who can step in.

yep he literally said a few weeks ago if he knew what he knows now he would have recruited a full back.

I am not sure that KLP is playing out of position now! We could be looking at a RICO replacement - in time?

Surely playing out of position he is right footed for a start

Was that not the change you'd made to the Injury Tracker spreadsheet that you were trying to alert everyone to the other day then??!!
