Sam Saunders

Where is Sam Saunders?
I was very impressed with him at the start of the season but he has seemed to have disappeared.
Is he injured or just out of favour?
Perhaps he's another Poole who blows hot and cold.
I couldn't find a thread on him so apologies if there is one somewhere.

Sam Saunders

He was suffering from illness i believe. Not sure if he is available for selection, but he is well behind Bostock and Taylor on the right wing anyway at the moment.

Have to agree with the above. It is an indication of the strength of our squad that a player that many of us (including me) were lauding as perhaps the best player in League 2 appears to have found the step up a real challenge. I hope he recaptures his early season form soon.

Sam Saunders

I can see a month loan coming for Sam! Hopefully he'll come back after finding his confidence :)!

I still believe Bostock should be filling a more central role in midfield and Saunders is then battling against Taylor for the wide right birth in a more 4-3-3 system that I woudl like to see tried out. :fishing:

That might be in order whilst we have Bostock. However, a loan back to League 2 would be a backwards step for SS imo, which if I was him I wouldn't be keen on making. I doubt AS would loan him to another league 1 team, so it's a difficult one.

Would love to see it given a go :sorted:

:imwith:

Who would you drop though Kev or Marcus?.I guess it would weaken the defensive nature of our current midfield but it may not be a concern as we'd always be attacking!

Sam Saunders

I would have Sam ahead of Clevand any day. While Sam has blown hot and cold, Clevland has blown cold in every game i've seen him play.

Actually I'd rest Charlie!!

Play O'Connor holding with Bean & Bostock further forward with a more mobile centre forward in Strevens upfront and Saunders/Taylor on RW and Weston on LW. It is flexible in that it can move from 4-3-3 to 4-5-1 to 4-4-2 at anytime without losing any balance.

Sam Saunders

Peter Taylor was keen to sign Saunders for Wycombe in the summer ... it will be interesting to see if Taylor gets another job soon, whether he renews his interest!

Sam Saunders

I'd be very sorry to see Sam go anywhere, even on loan. Don't see that he's done much wrong tbh, I think he's one of the best FOOTBALLERS at the club. I think he just needs a goal.

Although they are different players, I prefer him to Cleveland all day long. If you take Bostock out of the right midfield equation, I would start games with Sam & possibly use Cleveland as an impact sub with say 20 mins to go.

i heard the loan rumour too, im really disappointed he hasnt played more as i think he can have a really positive influence, hes got great close control and is always looking to shoot

Sam Saunders

one player i was excited about signing but underperformed in bees shirt.
but i would rather him then taylor

Sam Saunders

Cant see him going out on loan especially if Weston is out for a while.

If Weston is out it would leave us Taylor, Bostock (currently here for a month) Saunders and Wood (whom many have said is struggling with form this season)

Sam Saunders

Isn't everyone getting a bit previous? I thought he was on loan to his GP and had sent in a sick-note...

Sam Saunders

He was superb against Bristol City and Norwich. There's no reason why he shouldn't be able to regain his form.

Sam Saunders

Has the ability to be a top player but i'm not convinced he is a winger. On natural talent and ability alone he is one of the best in the squad. Would be nice to see him back in the starting line up on saturday as he is one of the few players who can play a pass to feet.

Wouldn't agree he's underperformed, he's just not be given a long enough run in the team. Our Manager cannot make up his mind between him and Taylor. For my money Saunders is better than Taylor and Wood and would be in my starting eleven.
Taylor is Shakes MK2 and Wood is well out of his depth.

Jesus Christ..........someone speaking sense at last. :sorted:

I cant believe that anyone (apart from Foster) is worse than Taylor.
AS has certainly signed some dross this season.

Wise words. We are crying out for a midfielder who can see a pass and deliver it and Saunders fits the bill. Trouble is our midfield has been sitting so deep that quite often the only option is to launch the ball 40 yards upfield. Saunders is the long-term option, not Bostock, and he should be given a run in the side where he can fill the enormous gap between our forwards and midfield.

Sam Saunders

Can't believe the support Saunders is getting on this thread - someone said he'd be in their first choice 11?!?!?! Why?!?! 2 good games in August and nothing since. Not a shot, not an assist, not a goal.

Taylor has also been a disappointment but at least he's scored (1-1 at Saints), he can beat a player, and is quicker than Saunders. During our recent very poor spell he had a good game at home to Gateshead. In contrast, Saunders played against Gateshead away and was pathetic - barely even tried to take his man on and when he did, the full back literally stood in his way to block him then walked the ball up the pitch. Even his ball control was woeful.

I don't have anything against Saunders, just pointing out the fact that he's been a massive, massive disappointment. Apart from Scott Canham, I can't ever remember being so excited about a signing we've made, and then so let down after watching his 'performances'.

So that 25-yard curling shot that hit the post against Swindon doesn't count? :(

One shot since August doesn't count for much in my book!

A major disappointment as everyone seemed really pleased he had signed - the worst of the Dagenham Three in my opinion.

He was good in League 2 but unproven at a higher level when we signed him and is still unproven.

At least Ricky Shakes had pace to beat a full back, whereas Saunders seems to be content to run up to the full back and then let him take the ball away - typified by his woeful display at Gateshead.

Sam Saunders

IMHO Saunders is getting better in the eyes of some because we are not playing well and he is not playing.

There could be an air of "he can't be worse than what is out there" when the reality from what I have seen is that he is.

lol jeez, if you get slated by WEB your time at the club is numbered :D

Yes, why on earth would he want Carlisle's player of the season and a player who was exceptional for S****horpe in the Championship.

Sam Saunders

At the end of the day both Taylor and Saunders have had their moments, but both of them have lacked consistency, for one reason or another. It could be they are being played out of position, or we play too much long ball, or they don't suit our style etc etc. The fact remains they have both underperformed. What makes you think that either player has got what it takes at this level, because if you do you have based your judgement on very little evidence to date, unfortunately. I would however say that Weston is a different kettle of fish, and is turning into one of our most important players this season.

Not from me, I mentioned how good he looked at Carlisle and v Norwich but he has been a heap of sh*te like the majority of them this season. A horrible squad of players with no affinity with the fans at all.

Sorry but I must have blinked at Taylor's moment.

.

Have to say I competly disagree about Taylor, I didn't know much about him, apart from what i'd read here and was very excited. I think he has been shocking in every game I have seen him in, and his "peformance" at Exeter ranks up in the worst i've seen from a Brentford player. I was at the Gateshead home game and while I agree he has pace, he couldn't even beat their full back, left the ball behind him and didn't get any crosses in (I have mentioned on here before that I went to the toilet after Strevens goal, so I did miss his cross) but I have been competley underwhelmed by him since he has been here.

I realise he must have some talent from his previous writings, but I just feel let down, I haven't seen him do anything of note yet, and I extremely dissapointed with him. So much so that I wouldn't even have him on the bench at the moment.

I think Taylor's been disappointing too, but unless my memory's worse than I thought, did he not provide the cross for Charlie's goal and the cross for Streven's goal which was ruled offside ? Had he not faded towards the latter stages, he was one of the candidates for MOM IMO.

Sam Saunders

Why was Sam Saunders so good at D&R ?, I don't agree that he's just a league 2 player....NO, I think it's a case that John Still knew exactly how to get the best out of him and AS doesn't......

I think if you read some of the reports from D&R fans about him. They too saw that he had loads of ability and performed well on quite a few occassions, but lacked consistency. I'm sure Scott sees that abilty and lack of consistency, but feels he can coach that into him.
For every player that does step up in leagues there are dozens that don't. Saunders may prove to be one of these. We just have to accept that will always be the case in lower level football with perilous finances.

Did both of those crosses come from the left wing?

Sam Saunders

Has Saunders ever been tried in CM,even in a reserve game?Or " in the hole "?

...............good call........his nickname at D&R was 'Toad'..........................

Your right. So why did Carlisle and S****horpe let him go?

Sam Saunders

I reckon one of the reason all of our wingers are underperforming this season is because they're not getting a consistent run in the team. Be it because of injury, or because AS keeps swapping them around and putting them on different flanks. I can never remember if Taylor is a left-winger or a right-winger.

Sam Saunders

Not sure about Scunny but he wanted to move south from Carlisle, they were gutted when he left for us.

Sam Saunders

Bit harsh on Taylor IMHO. Wide players like him need the service to get them into the game otherwise they often look out of it...we haven't exactly excelled in that area lately. I know it was ony Gateshead but I thought he was very good in that game.

Weston is better at making the space for the pass so perhaps has made more moves so far.

As for Saunders he has the skill but maybe too lightweight physically for this level.
