Master Attwell could learn a lot from the guy reffing the Celtic v Rangers game tonight. Real 100 mile an hour stuff and full blooded derby as usual but superbly refereed.

Yes, the ref's having a blinder. The game's virtually a friendly compared to some of the rabid encounters seen in the recent past. And as I write, Healey does his best to get sent off a minute after coming on.

Stuart Attwell

From Wiki:
Attwell was the centre of more controversy after he sent off Nenad milijas of Wolverhampton Wanderers in a fixture against Arsenal. After the incident the Wolves manager Mick McCarthy soon lodged a complaint about the harsh decision. Attwell's decision to send of Milijas further
highlighted the fact he is the worse referee in the world and shouldn't be allowed near a football match in the future, let alone officiate in one especially at such a high standard. The man is a complete joke and a fool who should never be taken seriously.

He is the worst ref I 've ever seem . Copyright Sloop John B Beachboys

Wonder why Attwell is given so many chances by the FA, when its clear to anyone who shouldnt be refereeing Football League rather then Premier League. Is his dad chairman of the FA? Is he blackmailing a senior FA excutive with posession of compromising pictures?

Agreed. That and the fact Steve Keen is still in a job is the biggest mystery in football since Ronaldo pulled out of the World Cup Final

The FA upheld the red card..... 3 game ban..... Unbelievable, especially after seeing the 'tackle', I'd be fuming. The FA are a laughing stock in supporting Attwell's decision.

What is it with the FA and their continual backing of Attwell, i just dont get it!

They can't be seen to be wrong but it's laughable and they are making bigger arses of themselves than if they admitted Atwell had made too many high profile errors and was off the elite list.

Sammon's red card (Wigan) v Man U got rescinded though. Makes you wonder, it really does, as the ref in that game clearly thought Sammon elbowed Carrick. Attwell probably didn't even bother looking at a replay of the incident in his game. He's an arse :sorted:

I think thats exactly what it is. Even more shocking is Attwell is now refereeing in Europe as well. He gave a shocking performance recently in the PSV-Hapoel TA Europa Leage match. 10 yellows and a red!

David pleat said on Radio 5 he saw that game and was very disappointed with Mr Attwell. Why on earth do they persist with him???

Do UEFA pick referees, or do the FA put forward who they consider to be their best?

One of the GPG's finest moments was Lokster's publication of Attwell's rehabilitation plan as proscribed by the FA. So it's not all that bad!

The ref was awful. Ignored two certain red cards in the last ten minutes, awarding mere yellos instead.

Ok, I might have been biased with certain spread positions lol

I'm starting to reach the conclusion he's no worse than many other referees. More like he's become a symbol of bad refereeing today.

They seemed to have had their fair share of dodgy pens this season.

Not good news as he'll be referring Football League games again. :( The Premier League were more than welcome to him!

Stuart Attwell

Great, so he will now end up in the Football League, lets hope he keeps away from us.

In fairness to Shatters, I suspect that the real problem here is the actual procedure of fast-tracking.
Reffing is about a lot more than apparent natural talent, and I suspect that you need to be in you mid-thirties before you have the experience, stature, bearing and man-management skills to carry it off.
Notwithstanding, he has been a disaster, and what have the authorities learned about their apparent error?

I would accept that if the man himself had one iota of common sense and self management / assessment. I agree that he was a product of the fast-track procedure but any self respecting professional would at least attempt to learn from their mistakes. I would bet that tw*twell didn't bother looking at footage to see what he may / may not have done wrong or could have done better, merely relied on the FA constantly overruling appeals to vindicate him.

Having watched him I bet he's sitting there scratching his head wondering what went wrong. The FA need to take some of that blame but so does he. 'Orrible little upstart!

Stuart Attwell

I should think the FA had one eye on the "controversy" and "big talking points" someone like him could give their pals in the media to report on, when they fast-tracked him. It seems like most decisions in football these days are made with the media and TV audiences in mind.

Probably not to fast-track someone just because they're young. But some of the other officials (Oliver?) have shown that if someone actually has some refereeing ability they're worth promoting.

Always remember the TV game at Notts County when he gave them an undeserved penalty for a 'ball to hand' handball. TV proved his decision was wrong.

That was Michael Oliver.

Stuart Attwell

Thats why I highlighted Oliver's name in Sweepys quote.

That's the sort of decision refs get wrong all the time. Regardless of the fact he's screwed us over (as did the "great" Graham Poll), I've found him to be a fairly decent ref in the Premier League - at the very least he's better than Foy and Clattenburg.

He did alright when we played Everton last season

Stuart Attwell

I wouldnt be surprised if Attwell gave up altogether. Im not sure how he would cope with the different pressures of the FL, where it will be a lot easier to hear what people in the crowd are shouting at him. I dnt think Attwell should have ever got as high as he did. The FA & Premier League seemed determined to push him as far as they could, even making him an English FA referee for European matches. The FA & Premier League are just as culpable.

It is a little ironic that another young referee, Michael Oliver, has had a rather good season. Yes i know he fouled up that game at Notts County a few years back, but his performances this season have shown hes hopefully got most of the bad decisions out of his system.

There do seem to be plenty of referees in the PL who seem to be there on reputation at the moment rather than performance. Foy, Mason & Walton should have been demoted a long time ago, and the likes of Webb, Dean, Jones, Dowd & Atkinson have had pretty poor seasons. Id go as far as saying Atkinson should be dropped too.

Bobby Madley I would expect to get promoted soon. Although I would like to see Linnington & Hooper given a chance.

That's a good knowledge of refs there boscombe. Always rated Hooper very highly when he has done our games, seems to have a lot of respect from the players too. Who is madley has he ever done a bees game?

Always good to keep a tab on those in the middle! For example its not a good day when you get Andy D'Urso or Brendan Malone! I often have a peek at a referee's forum http://s8.zetaboards.com/ratetheref/forum/2713/ which gives some fascinating insider knowledge. Madley is being fasttracked, he took an all-PL cup tie recently and went on the referee exchange with the Japanese FA (which gave us that awful ref against Basingstoke). I think he also has a brother who is also a FL referee. I did just look it up but madley refereed our games last season at home to Swindon and away to Peterborough

Stuart Attwell

That Japanese referee wasn't awful...

From memory, he had a good game but wasn't clear in his decisions with the players.. and wasn't helped by his assistants either...

One of the bigest parts of the referee's job is communication. He wasnt communicating his decisions with the players, assistants or the crowd, leaving everyone confused and prevented the game from flowing. He very much played his part for a pretty awful game.

Stuart Attwell

He was having a whale of a time at our expense.

I thought he was good and if anything was actually more lenient than we've become used to.

Nothing in the FL or FA Cup, unless he's been shunted into the conference, looks like he's having a day off.

I imagine he will be given a League 2 midweek game at some point maybe in a Champions League week so the press arent on at him

4th Official at the Liverpool Brighton match, just waiting for him to drop the board or piss off Kenny...
