That Oldham flag

I can't believe the naivety that some of you are displaying.
The slogans on the Oldham flag are covertly expressing racism by mischievously making irrelevant,'patriotic' statements.
If they were to show an overtly racist message,such as 'proud not be to be Asian',they would be bang to rights.Therefore,they express an apparently innocuous and positive sentiment, and challenge the rest of us to a semantic argument.
Finally,to dismiss objections to covert racism as being PC,is a corruption of that expression,and furthermore,shows that you have learned nothing from the history of the effects of racist propaganda.

I agree with you. But, we live in a country of free speech. And, you have not considered why they think the way they do. I've met enough people with patriotic views to believe this. In my opinion, you are being dismissive of those who are patriotic as covert racists. Maybe I'm wrong, but what you posted is very generalistic.

I have some sympathy with your argument Leicester,but I think that it's important that however people express themselves,we distinguish between those of goodwill and those of ill will.
Free speech does not encompass the right to be racially discriminate,and those of goodwill should take care not to be caught on the wrong side of the debate.

This is my first visit to the Brentford forums; I basically joined because was told about the Oldham flag and what it said.

I haven’t read all the posts so please forgive me if this has already been said before,

Couldn’t that slogan be turn around on the people that wrote it?

In England people of many different races, creeds, colours and religions are born here everyday, if they decide to stay and live and work in England, they like the rest of us will eventually die here, so the flag could represent the majority of people rather than a small minority.

I really think this is a protest about problems that they have in there own area and most Brentford supporters wouldn’t get hood winked into thinking anything else.

It strikes me that the only people who might be offended by a flag like that are the same types who try to ban the word "christmas" etc.
These people are not black or asian but middle class whites with nothing better to do.

At the end of the day that slogan is, for me, separate from the whole flag/patriotism thing. If they'd just had a flag with "oldham" on it - no upset. Put that on there = upset - which is why they did it in the first place.
