The Gary Smith thread

Does anybody know anything further about Smith's injury? Some say it's just a small knock, some say he'll be out for 6 weeks. All I know is that we need him fit and firing as soon as possible...

The Gary Smith thread

For some reason (Man Utd) the payout seems to have become big news.
It's been 2nd or 3rd on all the radio news bulletins I've heard today on Virgin, Xfm and Radio 2.
If this was an Aldershot or even Colchester player, no one would have heard a thing about it.

Because the Aldershot or Colchester player would not have received £4 million in compensation. :)

Have you had a common sense bypass? The guy got millions and has set a precedent for every no mark teenager who never made it due to injury.

This Ben Collett, who Gary Smith injured, continued to play for Manchester United - playing more reserve games, as well as under 19 games, before moving on to play for NZ Knights, where he played 18 times in 2006. He then moved onto Agovv Apeldoorn (2006/07) who currently play First Division football in Holland.

Career ending injury my ass.
This happened 5 years ago, and he was still playing 18 months ago.. when he finally gave up football. This is when he started to go through the courts for money.

Shame you weren't called as a witness then

If that's true that's not right really.

If it had actually stopped him playing maybe but he carried on playing just wasn't the same.

Does this mean Alex Rhodes can make a claim against McShane?

The Gary Smith thread

I dont kinow,l but I would imagine his claim was based on the fact "He was not the same player" after the injury, tried at lower and lower levels but he could not continue playing at a level that would reward him if he had been the same player and hence his claim.

But what troubles me is, did Middlesborough / Smith admit to a claim that Smith's tackle was dangerous with intention (Or similar words) ?? and admit liability.

My leg was broken playing football - No ones fault, it just broke in a tackle. (Thanks to a lumpy council pitch more than anything - I would have sued these days !)

So what happens now when Barton sees red, tackles someone, breaks their leg. Player with broken leg thinks, hang on, the last "Kid" got 4.5 Mill. Think I will hang up my boots on the claim to come.

I have no doubt the insurers will be taking a very long and hard look at this decsion (Which if paid out as per the kids policy then no complaint) - and seeing how quickly they can get the policy wording changed.

This case was on sky sports new last night.
Saying about how he was one of the biggest young prospects we ever had and then he had a carreer ending injury by Gary Gmith.

When I was 8, I was a very bright prospect, but then discovered I was crap at football, so my career effectively ended.

I took up swimming, but was average at best.

I was very good at French, and top of the school at 12 years old, only to make it into the remedial class by 15.
I blame Thatcher, she stole my milk, and limited my opportunities.

If I got Gary Smith to come down here and give me a good kicking and ruin my love life, will that qualify for compensation.

Would that be because the special ladies in your life might suffer from loss of earnings?

I am sure there are lots of cases of "biggest young prospects" who never made it, with or without injury.

But does anyone know anything about Smith's injury??

I wonder if soon we will see some sort of update on the BFC site with regards to his injury????:rolleyes:

The o/s is sadly again becoming a waste of space!!!! :(

I have to agree that we should have had some news on the injury situation. I am leaving in 10 mins and have no idea if Wood and Hamer have recovered. :nono:

Your 100% right Markbee. All you seem to get these days are home and away shirts being advertised. Surely a update wouldn't hurt would it? We know nothing about MacDonalds injury for example. Is it long term, short term? All AS said after Saturdays game was, that certain players who played would unlikely to be fit for tonights game. Take Dickson. If we knew he was going to be out long term we couldsend him and Monty a ''Get well soon card''.
I actually get more info off of the gpg these days.

Perhaps you should send this to Gary c/o the club. Who knows - it could form the basis for an appeal. Or have you already done so?

The Gary Smith thread

I think part of the basis of the compensation award was the fact hat his career did not reach the heights it was expected to prior to the injury.

Do BU have weekly meetings at the club? If so can't these sort of things be brought up. Since Allen left, I like quite a few don't feel part of this club anymore which is ashame. It was great reading some of the things MA came out with, he always kept us informed as best he could. Please learn AS.

I don't like to think that smudger gets crocked and we lose our passing game.
Can F. Artus step up, isn't he a ball playing midfielder?

Spot on Markbee.
Whatever MA's faults were, his publc relations were brilliant.:sorted:

 Appeal against what? he and Boro have already admitted liability.

Hamstrings go when you are not fully warmed up and you stretch the bastard by charging around cold. No chance that anyone was going to do that this weekend. The new physio must wonder what's hit him unless of course he's injured too.

The Gary Smith thread

I think that Pead should play while Smith is injured. Pead was poor in midfield last season, when he was playing the holding role alongside Sammy Moore, but he excelled in a more free role in pre-season.

With Bean holding, Pead is better suited than O'Connor, being more mobile and better on the ball.

From the sound of it, the award was made, as Phoenix says, on him reaching "heights it was expected to prior to the injury" - heights expected, from what I have read, by ManUtd and the Old Trafford medical team. It seems they claimed the injury was so bad he had to give up playing as a result.

Presumably Gary and Boro went along with that assessment - but now we're told he DID keep on playing, so the facts are materially altered. Surely that could be - I repeat could, I'm no legal expert - the grounds for an appeal.

Evening all you brentford fans i am posting sum info with regards to the match in which this farce of a compo payout came from as people feel u should know what happened
In the game that has caused all this, the tackle that gary did was not foul play of any description, Gary didnt even get cautioned for it, it was a 50/50 challenge which happened on the stroke of half time, and Gary went on to play the rest of the game
Ill add to that quote that gary does know that he went on to play in new zealand n holland and then retired, unfortuantly its nothing to do with him its boro's insurers that are in charge of it

Good luck for season i may get to sum away games closer up this way wen u up, any offers of buyin me a pint would be greatly appreciated

I've just logged on with the sole intention of starting a new thread re. the o/s. I'm really getting p"ssed off with the lack of information us supporters are receiving on what is happening at the club especially with regard to the team. I hit the site many times during the day as do most of us no doubt bringing in some revenue, in the hope that we get some news but it's nearly always about kit auctions, what's the latest value bet, etc. Ok we get the usual match reports and AS's press conf. on Bees World but they always seem to say the same thing.
Sorry this is off topic but mods please feel free to move. Thanks

Somebody please refresh my memory. What's wrong with Gary Smith and when are we likely to see him on the bench?

It's typical that we are playing against Mousinho just when he would be first pick if he was still with us.

He'd only be first pick if Bean, Smith, O'Connor and Pead were all out. :sorted:

Wow, three posters hanging on my everyword :sorted:

I will explain.

In Scott's current plan, I see the central midfield options order being....

Bean, Smith, Pead, O'Connor, Artus....

Bearing in mind Artus wasnt here when Mousinho was released but the rest were, and Pead has stayed and "taken his opportunity well", Mousinho would fit in at 5th or 6th choice, if he was still here.

Smith and O'Connor are out, Mousinho would still not be first pick, I'll wager....
