He's still getting in to the box and making good runs this season IMO he just hasnt really got the goals. If theres defending to do, he'll do it and if theres an attacking forming in front of him he gets involved. That how hes always played.

The Marcus Bean thread

I'm not sure you can get too granular about midfielders! I'd say they are either: defensive / holding; attacking / forward, or; wide / wingers. I'm not sure there is a "hanging about in the middle" type. I can't see why his positioning at corners contradicts anything; if a CB come up for a corner, he's still a CB. Personally, I think Douglas is better forward than playing the holding role.

I read it that your point was that becasue he had scored from some corners he was an attacking midfielder that season. If Leon Legge scores 10 in a season from corners is he an attacking centre back? Or like you say, he's still a centre back.

The Marcus Bean thread

Yeah I know, I saw him do it. But he wasn't playing attacking midefield. He was just playing central midfield, very well. This crap that he played 'attacking midfield' that season is b***ocks. Zidane played as attacking midfielder. Beano is an all rounder and is likely to be seen in his own box as the oppositions.

Bean is a midfield destroyer, getting into the opposition winning tackles, denying them time and shutting down space. IMHO he needs to be playing at a high tempo and deep in the oppos half to be effective. He has shown more composure and used the ball better this season than I've become used to in previous seasons but he isn't and will never be my idea of an attacking, goal scoring midfielder.
I like Marcus and while I don't really rate him think he has been a good servant who never hides or shirks a challenge.
Other more naturally talented individuals would do well to adopt the attitude and display the effort that Marcus does every time he pulls on the shirt.

Why do people feel the need to pigeonhole every player to a strictly defined position that they have seen on Football Manager 2012 ?

When we have the ball, he is an attacking midfielder
When we don't he is a defensive midfielder
When he is out wide, he is a wide player
When he is in the middle, he is a central midfielder

Essentially all he has to do is chase the ball get the ball, control the ball, pass the ball or shoot the ball
Same as every other player - with the exception of the goalie.....

He scored 9 goals in our promotion season and got into the box quite frequently. ISTR that he would run to the near post for corners and got a few that way. Given that he was not a defensive midfielder, I think that qualified him as an attacking midfielder during that season.

2 out of 5 for the Beanie man :( not bad I suppose, he can't do it all by himself, unlike Smiffy ;)

The Marcus Bean thread

Whilst I quite like Beany it will depend on who else is available imo. There has to be a bit of a shake up at the end of the season if we are serious about promotion and Beany is one of the players imo who could go. I would not be surprised either way. With him, Douglas, Dave, KOC and Reeves we are not short of middle players, someone will be leaving imo.

Can't agree mate, you play to your strengths and Marcus' strengths are his energy, ability to win challenges and stop the opposing player having time and space with the ball.

I honestly don't expect him to regularly play defence splitting long passes or get shots off on goal. I know he has and can on occasions but it's not what UR will instruct him to do unless he finds himself better placed than others.

I'm a fan and not familiar with the game you're on about, don't profess to have qualifications or aspire to be a coach. I do however watch a lot of football and played to a reasonable standard until injury forced me to retire earlier than I'd have liked and don't believe that all midfield players are asked or expected to do the same.

When I read that it reminded me of the only time I played for 6th Whitton cubs. Everyone chasing the ball around the pitch in a big huddle.
What about marking, positioning, making runs, tracking back, etc. ? All the boring stuff that glory hunters aren't prepared to do and a number of supporters don't seem to understand.

ps. 'goalie' is a sh*t term. You now join nocoat on the list........

Read in the Ealing gazette that he expects to leave as no deal offered..shame I think his attitude is something any team needs..wonder where he will end up once his contract ends..I think we should keep him as a squad Player ,he has fought his way back into the team so Rosler must see something in him

The Marcus Bean thread

..........not the most technical of players, but gives 100%........... gets stuck in.............tackles,harasses and a general annoyance to the opposition...........

The Marcus Bean thread

We keep saying we need better, but a better player never arrives, so I'd offer a one year deal with an option of two if he plays enough games. He does a job that no other player does at GP. He's not a classy footballer but has his merits.

I think a lot of people would have been glad to see Marcus leave pre season as lots of perspiration and little inspiration.

However, UR has got the best out of him and he's played above himself on numerous occasions and in some games has been very effective. I like his attitude, his effort and he never leaves anything out on the pitch but in truth he's probably not good enough to play in a table topping league 1 side. I'd be happy if he had a year to run but we shouldn't really be offering new 2 year deal IMHO.

I've posted before he's a great example of a player who has made the most of his ability unlike many technically better footballers. He's one player I'd happily applaud if he returned with another club, expect to see him as Captain of Daggers or Wycombe next season.

The Marcus Bean thread

...........and posters clamour for Saunders to be given a contract extension because he occasionally takes a decent free kick...........give me the Beanieman all day long...........

The Marcus Bean thread

Problem we have and has been mentioned on another thread is that there are not too many players out of contract at the end of the season, and we have offered GA, SS and KO further deals. This means that it limits who we can change in terms of personnel, so except for SS, GA and KO (if he stays), there is only Bean and Woodman I think who are out of contract. Does not give us much room for wheelin and dealin. Also when you think we already have KOC, Douglas, Dave and Reeves competing for the middle slots someone has to go. I like Bean but cannot say hand on heart I would place him above the others, anyway the others are all under contract for next season, so really its a no brainer.

completely agree. i think if you look at games last season where Bean didnt play we struggled to stop opposition key players.

When I think about last year I just wish we didnt get rid of AS until after the JPT FINAL...he would have never have started Adam Reed (im sure to this day Warburton picked Reed not NF) or Robbie Neilson (would have been Kev and Bean instead) and we would probably have won the JPT as a result. but hey ho we move on.

anyway...Bean to stay. not many battlers like him around.

The Marcus Bean thread

A number of players who haven't been good enough over the life of their contracts with us need to leave if we are to free up budget to bring in better and the club is to move forwards.

MB is one of those IMHO. A few better performances recently as his contract nears its end don't make up for far too many indifferent/terrible performances over the past couple of years.

The Marcus Bean thread

Terrible? Not sure about that..in the last 2/3 seasons only off the top of my head have Akinde orTudor Jones been that bad

The Marcus Bean thread

The only reason we would keep him on is if we didn't think we could improve on him. Both Douglas and Dave are signings we have made who are better so why can't we make a third? The fact is, Marcus Bean will not go to a better club than us so to keep him is settling for second best imo. Harsh as he's a good pro who gives his all but if we are serious about moving forward then he shouldn't be kept on. He'll get another club, no worries.

The Marcus Bean thread

There will be games which are going to be physical and you need a player who can stand up in midfield. MB at the mo , is our only option to do that. However, that would mean offering a contract to a squad player and maybe that's a luxury. Optimum is to get a mid player who can pass and mix it.

The Marcus Bean thread

Would be gutted to see Bean leave unless someone we bring in has better quality

Very late and very drunk but you're right. Sentiment doesn't play a part in successful managers mentality.

Still bet he'll get a 2 year deal at somewhere like Wycombe, Daggers, Barnet or Gillingham

The Marcus Bean thread

Shame if he goes as he has had a better season that most if not all of the other midfielders and is certainly more deserving of a new contract than Saunders but I accept that if we are to progress we have to bring in better players.

The Marcus Bean thread

Not good.
We should be offering Bean something, in my humble opinion.
He'll go to another League One side, who will use him effectively and he will hurt us, twice next season.

http://www.hounslowchronicle.co.uk/...49/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

You need a mix of players in a squad.
Some that create, some that break up play and some that score.
Unless we have better, or better lined up. then this is a mistake

Sometimes you can get a player who can do more than one of those things. Unfortunately Marcus's talents extend only as far as breaking up play. He is a destructive player who has little else about his game. League 2 is his level IMHO. He has rarely hurt any of our opponents over the last couple of years so I doubt he will do what you suggest to us.

He is a decent part of the squad this season and last time I looked we were mid table League One.
We finished mid table League One, with him in the squad last season and reached Wembley, where he was one of the brighter notes.

Like Wood, his energy is needed in this club.
So far Rosler's signings have not set the world alight and though I recognise, to progress we need a better player than Bean, I fear the grass is always greener and we'll end up with a worse player to replace him.

Sounds like you dont have much ambition for the club if you want to keep someone you admit isn't good enough for us to progress . he can't even successfully complete a 5 yard pass most of the time.

I think smiffybee is spot on with his take on Mr. Rosler's signings, whats more worrying is Uwe's decision making in general.

Not sure where you're coming from on this. Uwe has brought in Douglas, Logan, Eger and Harry on contract deals. You can add Legge and Lee to the list. He has offered performance related deals to Saunders and Alexander. His loan signings have generally been good. All have IMO been an improvement on what we have. Grella and McGinn have been problematic but that's a pretty good return on quality improvement as all deals are a risk. Compare that with what went before. There have been critics of what has been termed ' tinkering' with selection but I believe we have to get used to rotation as the physical demands on players are very high these days. The last regime was criticised for having no plan B and Uwe has brought in a number of variations. Uwe is trying to improve the footballing mentality within the club and IMO that's what we need if we are to progress upwards.

Then we won't go up, constant rotation does not work at our level, we need a consistant team and not the weekly changes from Uwe.

The Marcus Bean thread

I like Bean but his limitations are there for all to see, if we are to raise the bar and move to a more pass and possession type of play he doesn't really fit other than as a backup blood and thunder type of squad player. Useful but maybe not affordable. Could be UR will wait until next years squad is nearly formed before seeing if there is a place for him, chances are he will get himself fixed up elsewhere and good luck to him if he does.

What do you mean by it not working at our level? The issue is physical fatigue and that applies at any level and it hasn't been tried for a sustained period. It also integrates all the players into the playing style so that we are comfortable when changes are made. The old approaches have left us at this level [ with one exception] since 1946 so IMO there's no evidence to support your view. Do you accept that maybe we do need to try something different?

The Marcus Bean thread

I'd rather Uwe learned from his mistakes and made sure that we got someone better in before we let him go. Bean is a decent player to have at this level (contrary to what some believe, we are a mid-table league one side and have been for the last two seasons). I would think a year's extension on the same terms as Alexander/Saunders with an extension based on appearances would be a decent compromise.

I think the key is having the players available who can comfortably be used in a rotation system. Maybe this season was a little early in some areas but hopefully going forward you would hope things will get better as Uwe brings in more of his own players better suited to this style.

I suggest that you wait until mid-April before making such a statement; we have 11 matches in 6 weeks and the only way through that is rotation, even if we do not get injuries or suspensions. We need a consistent squad with players able to swap seamlessly in a position and no "utility" players.

Why?, we too far off the play off's now. I believe Uwe is on the right track (its has taken me a while to reach this conclusion) but I believe we would be closer to the play offs than we are now if Uwe had kept a settled team more often. What Uwe needs is to know what his best eleven is and to stick with it, yes there will aways need to be changes but not to the extent we have seen this season.

Yes you are right that we need to try something new and the old way of thinking has kept us in this division for a long long time. Uwe's style of play is new and will bring us success but I just don't think the constant tinkering helps. Strikers don't tend to perform if they are in and out of the team. Centre back pairings can't build up an understsnding if they don't play consistantly together. Man U or Chelsea may be able to rotate players but we could never build up a squad with enough quality to achieve this. Any player worth his salts at our level is not going to want to be in and out of the team.

? In your opinion are Bournemouth in the hunt ?

They are closer than us and on a better run. They have won 4 of their last 9 games we have one 1. If we can win 4 or 5 on the spin then we will be back in it but there is nothing to suggest this will happen. We have been too inconsistant...I hope I am wrong thou.

Just 3 wins and we'll be level on games with Bournemouth and 5 points ahead of them.

I'd say everyone from Orient upwards has a shout at the Play Offs
Orient are 10 points behind Stevenage with 48 points to play for...
If we are OUT of the play off hunt, then only Carlisle and Stevenage are in the hunt for 6th spot - Is this true ?

In regars to Bean I would be sorry to see him go, he always has given 100% and is obviously a good influence around the squad. I am surprised Uwe hasn't offered him anything especially as he's been a regular starter the past 10 games or so..

So you think that Uwe should just give up and play the same 11 players for 11 matches in 6 weeks? I don't think he's that sort of manager (at least, I hope not).
