Are you Marcus?

Don't tell me, you wish Sam Wood was playing too, alongside our other 100%'ers..... Sometimes you need a little more to go with the efforts and blood and thunder. I like Bean, but it depends if he's prepared to be a squad player and to only get a years contract, when maybe a two year deal is offered by a club like Wycombe, Gillingham or Southend.

...surely all players are squad players - no-one is guarenteed a game - if they are playing well and in form and fit - then they play...

Marcus's 4th season this year
132 starts and 15 goals not inc JPT
33 starts per season

A good twist on it. As you know, managers have a favoured XI, within a squad, if other players were still available, I doubt Marcus would be in that XI.

did well last night again in an unusual position...I still think hes better in the middle and probably in place of Dave

How often are all the players in a squad available though over the course of a season? I think SmiffyBee's stat is an excellent one and shows the value of Bean to the current Brentford squad.

The Marcus Bean thread

Oh and never sulks when he's not in the team - he is an excellent squad member with qualities that are essential at certain times during a season and for that reason, assuming of course we can afford to retain such a player, we should be offer him a contract. There's a Joni Mitchell lyric which somes up the Bean situation perfectly - can't quite remember.... Sponsored walk anyone?

Big Yellow Taxi for Marcus Bean?

Would not surprise me if we did offer a years contract providing the wages are ok as, whilst I do not see him as a championship player, we are not there yet and presuming we are still in this division there is a role for a Marcus style player. Ideally we would want better but that might cost more. If giving Marcus 12 months means we are able to spend more to get others then it could be a good deal for all

Last night he scored and got involved although, unlike one poster, he was far from my man of the match

The Marcus Bean thread

I do not understand the anti-Bean brigade at GP and on the GPG.

In my opinion he is clearly energetic, determined and very good at breaking up play. He always gives 100% and does not allow the opposition midfield to settle. Ok, so he is limited in terms of going forward but I do not think that is his job.

He has played 130+ games for the club, and is the sort of player we would miss, rather than the sort that gets the plaudits.

Give him another year Uwe!

The Marcus Bean thread

It seems people either love or hate Beano. I for one think he is the glue that holds our sometimes flaky midfield together. Tough tackling, box to box and gets a goal now and then. What team wouldnt want him? I think we need him if we get more talented, skilful midfielders. Beano must stay Uwe!!!

Like you I feel that if the money was right, keep him, I think it could be a good deal for all, not the most skillfull player we have had, but you can't complain about his 100% commitment and workrate, a very useful squad member when injuries strike, compare his skill alongside McGinn, we know who comes out on top, but compare workrate and commitment and we all know that Bean would come out on top, His work and skill rate remind me of dear old Tommy Higginson, and he served us well.

The Marcus Bean thread

I have always liked Beanie and I would be very sorry to see him leave.

He provides the 100% commitment that has been missing from the side for weeks until the last four games.

Sign him up for one season plus an option.

I don't think there's an anti Bean brigade. His fans constantly talk about his workrate and ability to break up play. No-one disputes that he has a high workrate. It's simply that we need more to move on IMO. I'm not convinced about his ability to break up play. Sometimes he does a job in that respect but he didn't beak up anything against Oldham did he? He was rightly subbed.

The Marcus Bean thread

I would like to keep him as a squad player who can fill in where and when necessary and come in and do a marking, ball winning and defensive job as required.

That might well suit us but he is at the peak of his career and I suspect he might well feel that he can do better and find a club where he is first choice and can play 40 games per season.

You can see that MB really wants to play every week and visibly frets when he is on the sidelines.

My guess is that he will move in with our thanks for 4 years of excellent service.

Think you may be right, if you gave Uwe a chance of signing Forshaw permanently plus one other next season or a new deal for Marcus plus one other, you kinda get a vibe where Rosler would go as it looks like Rosler is moving for a different type of midfield player.

Uwe will probably offer Marcus something but probably with no promise of more than a squad role which will I think make Marcus' decision easier to make to move on.

If you asked Uwe who he wants in his midfield for next season, from his praising of the players in press conferences, Douglas and Forshaw would be his first two names, Beany has a role but it's not a major one you feel as Uwe makes the changes for next year.

Highlight the anti Bean brigade please.

The vast majority see Marcus as a player to have within the squad. Maybe not a first choice XI but someone you may need to call upon in a season. It's whether he'd take a years deal over other offers from clubs who could see him as a first XI player.

The Marcus Bean thread

If Rosler doesn't get Forshaw or similar by the start of June, then he'll offer Bean a deal.
Hopefully 2 years and hopefully before he is snapped up by another club.

Offering him a 1 year deal, though convenient for the club, won't be accepted, as he'll get better offers elsewhere.
FACT
Use your loaf Rosler - Play it safe and offer him a 2 year contract NOW
Better the devil you know !

The Marcus Bean thread

I also fully agree. Always liked Beanie. If we don't offer him a new contract someone else will - very quickly.

Bean has showed that he is prepared to fight to keep his place in the team. Long may it continue. A key member of our squad and a local lad who I'm sure want to continue to play for us - sign him up for 2 years Uwe, NOW before he is snapped up by someone else.

The Marcus Bean thread

We will have Kev back next season. Do we need two players who have a similar style or is it better to invest in upping the quality in midfield? I assume that's why the management haven't made an offer to Bean. If both Bean and Kev were fit and we needed a player to close down a particular game, I'd pick Kev every time in that role.

The Marcus Bean thread

We could offer him a two year deal now but I trust we're always looking at players and keeping tabs on them, let's just hope one becomes available after the season.
I would like to see Bean stay with us but would much rather try and sign someone better, someone who can do what Bean does but brings a better all round game, tough decision.

The Marcus Bean thread

Not all new signings work or settle in maybe we should reward a loyal and commited player who will be an example to younger players who may get signed in the future..

The Marcus Bean thread

Its not a case of if you like Bean or not, we have Dave, Reeves, Douglas, KOC and maybe Forshaw (if he comes back next season) in contention for 2 central slots. Bean is the only one out of contract. Uwe needs the flexibility to bring in players of better quality and I think I would rather have Forshaw back rather then settle for Bean given what we already have. It makes good sesnse both from a football and business perspective. Nothing personal, just the way it is.

I'd like Bean to stay, but any chance of Jay Tabb coming back home if Reading go up?

Not sure that it is using your loaf to give him 2 years!!! Equally if we apply your logic of better the devil you know then the likes of Eddie Hutchinson et al would still be rumbling up and down the pitch.

I agree that others may offer him a contract and if we do not get any beter and he has signed elsewhere then that is unfortunate however in my own mind there will be a number of industrious midfielders looking for work come the summer some of whom will be as good or better than Marcus.

Personally I beleive he is worth a 1 year deal with a second dependant upon apearances providing we are not paying unrealistic wages. This may not suit Marcus in which case he can go with all our best wishes, but at the end of the day it would benefit Brentford which is surely where our first loyalties lay

I beleive he has actually improved this term and who knows he could improve even further, I love his attitude and work ethic but a straight 2 year deal is, in my opinion, a waste of money.

That is a nice call. Tabby is just what we need in front of Douglas. It might well be poss as Tabby has irons in the fire outside football and he may well want to come back here on wages we can pay as his last hurrah at a club he loved playing for.

Yes. Tabby has said he wants to retire at 30. Interesting article in the programme about Tabby in the 'where are they now?' section.

The Marcus Bean thread

didn't we only give Saunders a year deal with a year option?
the same as Shay when we signed him
and Richard Lee is only signed on for another year if i recall correctly
if MB is one of the lower earners then i think a year, with an option for the club for a second year is fair based on what others have been offered
then if we go up and decide we dont want him anyone, we're not tied down, if he is player of the season next year, then we can keep him on
he might want to be first choice, he might want to be another teams Jon Doug. but then thats his choice
a years deal with a years option would be fair for all parties, if thats what Brentford want to do, but people would understand if he wanted to move on, for a longer deal, or for more first team football

The Marcus Bean thread

Think we need to remember how he has played for the last 2 seasons not just the last half dozen games as his contract nears it's end. For most of that time our centre mid has been our biggest problem. I see him as part of that problem not part of the solution.

Would that be the Eddie Hutchinson we released in 2006, just before a stonker of a season ?
Thank goodness we released him when we did ! Replacing him with all time greats such as Joey Keith and Ricky Newman
He'll get a 2 year deal elsewhere in League One - He has been effective for 4 seasons now - sometimes when something is working, you don't need to change it.

No guarantee that Forshaw will be better over a whole season and no guarantee that Kev will make a great recovery and return to the form he had 2 or 3 years ago....

Bean's the man for me, not sure if you could tell that !

The Marcus Bean thread

At the end of the day Bean does have the heart and character to get stuck in and scrap ,how many other players in our squad could you say the same for, we need him more than he needs us at present

Don't you think that the Oldham game showed his deficiencies? OK he can scrap but he was bypassed in midfield by players who were sharper and had a better touch and was quite rightly subbed because he was ineffective. Better players will always get the better of Bean because they are quicker and move the ball at a faster pace. OK if you want to maybe get the better of an average side in league 1 but not if you aspire to go up a level.

IMO he was very average today

The Marcus Bean thread

.............a poor game from the Beanieman today.......

The Marcus Bean thread

He didn't use the ball well and it is frustrating to see him give the ball away so easily and cheaply but we needed strength and height in the midfield today and he helped us win the battle.

The Marcus Bean thread

Probably in the circumstances the best we could put put included him but if we can't find better we won't progress next year.

The Marcus Bean thread

yeah not great today but there have been games when hes been very important

The Marcus Bean thread

His position is not right wing, he looked better when he was in the middle.

The Marcus Bean thread

Got to be impressed with the way he plays out of position without complaint.. Started on the right..moved intothe middle later..no ego.. Just does a job for the team.. Can be trusted to do what the team needs not the most skillfull but should be kept next season

The Marcus Bean thread

His position is not right wing, he looked better when he was in the middle.

I agree. Whilst Saunders was excellent playing in the middle, it meant that we didn't have a recognised wide man on either flank, hence Bean looked out of place. As you say, he improved when Douglas went off.

The Marcus Bean thread

To all the Bean doubters, who believe that should we be lucky enough to be playing at a higher level next season, he would be surplus to requirements. I would simply say look at Grant Holt at Norwich. Who would have believed that he could be such a success in the Premier League. When I last saw him he looked like a donkey playing for Shrewsbury in League 2.
