Weren't all his achievements bankrolled by Brooks Mileson? You don't go up through 3 divisions solely on flashing the cash admittedly, however nor do you go up through 3 divisions on average gates of 300 on pure talent.

Having taken some time to digest the list, I must admit there are some desirable names there.

For me a definite no for Scott, Fairclough, Marshall and Westley. If Johnson is the Bristol City man, then absolutely no chance of getting him and I think the same could be said for Perryman.

Then from the rest I would be relatively happy with Cotterill, Hertford, Cooper, Simpson, Clough, Newell and of course MA.

Regrettably I don't know enough about some of the others, but many on here seem to like Daish and Paul Buckle seems to be doing a good job at Torquay. However, I really don't have much knowledge of their management capabilities.

Anyway what do I know as I initially thought that TB would do a goodish job, until he actually started to assemble a squad. Then from July on the writing was on the wall.

Andy Hessenthaler is among the candidates to become the new Brentford boss.

The club's chairman, Greg Dyke, is believed to want a boss with lower-league experience to succeed Terry Butcher, who left the club this week after just seven months in the job.

The Bees are hovering dangerously above the League Two relegation zone following five straight defeats. They have also not scored a goal in eight hours and 40 minutes of football.

Former Watford midfielder Hessenthaler, 42, is player-boss of non-League Dover but is best known for keeping Gillingham in what is now the Championship for three years on a shoestring budget.

He has been looking to get back into League management since quitting as Gills boss in November 2004 and was pipped to the Brentford job by Leroy Rosenior 18 months ago.

Hessenthaler said: "I was disappointed not to get the job when Leroy got it. Brentford are a good club in a false position."

Oh yeah, Hess. He's not been mentioned at all for, well, at least a few posts. Aside from his denial of interest, the impression I get is that he wants the job badly and gets linked with it every time. Maybe he should be given a tryout and see what he can do. I imagine he would have the hunger and desire for it even if it is expressed in a different way than, say, MA.

I've been unsure about Hess in the past, but I am now coming around to the idea that he may be worth a try.

I wouldn't have an issue with him. Some managers have a knack of promoting lower league teams and although he has only done it once you get a feeling about him.

I know that opinion seems split on whether or not we should get Martin Allen back (if he will come back or not), but my point is this. Whether you like him or not he attracts players who want to play for Brentford, who have been sold on for profit, involves the fans in the club (fans v players, notes on website, access to training ground etc), attracts media attention, and most importantly has a great rapport with the majority of fans and puts bums on seats. On the downside he can seem a bit of a meglomaniac and should concentrate on team and fan affairs not budgets and general running of the club (if this is to be believed). I personally think he is the tonic we need provided the board can resolve any issues as well as the man to bring the fans back to GP. I am sure the other candidates have their qualities but I doubt any would have the immediate impact Martin would have. Sometimes its better the devil you know and in our case that is what is needed after the last 3 mistakes. PS, If Brentford is a FANS run club now as we are always being told then why dont the club take our opinions seriously on who we want in charge. After all we are the ones who pay to come to watch. The least they could do is read this poll.

Agree 100%. Some people have a moan at his daily website updates but I really liked them. I felt I was in daily contact in regards to the comings and goings around the training pitch, peoples personalities amd what he was expecting. All we have had come out of the club in the last 2 years is stone wall silence. A very brief preview of a game which usually just tells you tells the time and the place, a very brief summary of the last press conference and nothing in between. No updates or statements from the board, the managers or the players. In fact I hardly bother using the website anymore!

So did I, and though I don't think he'd come back, (he'd be mad to, everything to lose and nothing to gain in terms of reputation) the other thing i miss is the way he managed upwards, not in terms of wanting to take over and run the club, just the way that he seemed to get everyone on their toes. In the words of the hackneyed bumper sticker joke 'Jesus is coming....look busy'

In a less technically developed time, I also used to really enjoy Coppells programme notes. I used to read them first, and buy the programme because of them. Really intelligently written, un-patronising and honest.
