Wayne Rooney

Sir Bobby scored 2 in a World cup semi final and Lineker was a match winner in numerous games in both 86 and 90 World Cups, Rooney has been missing in knockout stages of games for 12 years.

The entire English national side were missing with him.

Wayne Rooney

Gareth Southgate doesn't understand the booing of him as he gives 100% every game...:)

I'm sure what Southgate wanted to say was that any English fan who thought that booing one of their own was the right thing to do was a c***.

Wayne Rooney

The entire English national side were missing with him.

They're not all as over rated or hyped up as World class. My issue is personal as he doesn't understand why he gets criticised when he constantly lets his country down.
He openly insults fans who've paid thousands to travel the other side of the World when they dare to boo a performance like the 0-0 vs Algeria.

Wayne Rooney

Thought he was awful against Malta. Although to be fair both full backs had even worse games. Hope dier starts next match

They had much better players around them as well, Rooney only had a half decent side around him in 04 funnily enough.

Anyway, Bobby Charlton was a much better player than Rooney was regardless of goals scored and Lineker an old fashioned poacher. Rooney has played on the left many times for England and always put in a shift. In the WC against Italy when we were utter sh*t he ran further than any other player on the pitch that night from the left wing and set up a great goal for Sturridge but it was still all his fault we lost. For all his faults to score over 50 goals for England and in the majority of your games to have covered more turf and put in more effort than anyone else must stand for something even if you are being tainted because you are past your best now.

Wayne Rooney

Seems like he is being " rested" on Tuesday according to the press today

Sorry, he was awful vs Italy regardless of the amount of running he did.

Don't agree re better players wasn't Rooney a key part of the "Golden generation" that apparently represented our best chance of glory since 1966 with half a dozen World class players - Cole, Ferdinand, Beckham, Gerrard, Owen, Scholes and bar 2004 he never stepped up and was either injured, ill disciplined or tired at major tournaments,
Coupled with the fact that he is an ignorant, arrogant oik who forgets his council house roots and fans passion for the National game and what it means to us when we lose. As well as failing to shoulder responsibility like Hart and Gerrard and even John Terry he seeks to blame everybody else and on more than once occasion has even mocked the fans who have travelled thousands of miles and spent thousands of pounds of their own hard earned money to support.

Let's agree to disagree, he was a very important player for England who has a great record but will never in my opinion hold a candle to players who have rightly been recognised as role models and deserve to be called legends.

I can only judge him personallly on the two times i met him, and he was an absolutely lovely bloke, willing to chat, have photos, autographs and was having a laugh with everyone around - even opposition fans having a (lighthearted) pop at him.
I bumped into him again a few days later and he actually remembered my name and shook my hand.
This was 9 years ago though and NOT in a football scenario

Wayne Rooney

My gripe against Rooney is 100% to do with on the field activity I dont care if he's the most horrible human on the planet (which he isnt), I just dont think he deserves an England starting place.

The fact is, apart from Rooney for a bit around 2004-2006 we have had one world class player in the last twenty years, purely in being as effective at International standard as they are domestically and that is Ashley Cole.

Wayne Rooney

England captain named on the bench for Slovenia game..

You're not a middle aged lady of the night by any chance? :fishing:

Wayne Rooney

Look at it this way
A Name the best 2 Holding Midfielders
B Name the best 3 Attacking Midfielders
C Name the best Striker

And on current form Mr Rooney does not feature in A B Or C

So he shouldn't start

I think you can argue Scholes and Beckham were easily world class by any measure. Probably Michael Owen too in his earlier days before injured nobbled his pace. Even Mr Unpopular John Terry would have been hard to say was poor internationally for a long time and would get in most sides. In fact those first two I think are above Rooney and are regularly rated as the real stars of recent times when I hear interviews from opposition stars.

Whoever said fear is deeply ingrained in Rooney is spot on, and this is why this situation perfectly illustrates why we will never be a great footballing nation arguably ever again. Fear has killed any creativity and dare I say "va va voom" we could ever hope to have. We have a long history of picking James Milners and not Matt Le Tissiers because of fear.

We are scared of everything. Scared of appointing a manager that isn't "Pundit" approved, scared of dropping Rooney when he is so glaringly past it, scared of not living up to some largely imagined world greatness that we haven't genuinely held since the late 80's early 90's at a very generous push. Our national game and team is the living embodiment of someone who has been in a dead end job for 30 years and now needs to reinvent themselves to be relevant in order to get a job, but still makes all the same mistakes and holds on to all the bad habits of the past AND gives them selves crushing pressure to succeed.
We need a complete root and branch overhaul with a total clear out (much like BFC have managed to do and are still doing with innovation) A totally different direction and a total disconnect from the tired punditry and sermonising of the media. A good example would be the rise of Rashford - I genuinely believe that most nations would throw someone so obviously talented straight in. Yet we deliberated and the so called experts debate until the cows come home and we do it about everything from formations to nth minutiae. I genuinely stopped caring about England when Wilshere got in the squad ahead of Drinkwater. It told me we don't even know how to change.

It's some job but until we remove this expectation and just really pick our best players (on form and not reputation) and genuinely play without fear nothing will ever change. Southgate is deluding himself if he thinks he can make any difference. He is a product of the whole system. A very poor manager (IMHO) lauded for mediocrity and dependability rather than talent/tactical nous.
Lars Lagerbeck called it beautifully when he told Iceland they were playing the most overrated national team in history. I'm afraid we are the only ones who rate us and we need to culturally or a deep level admit we are sh*t. Everyone of us on here will get genuinely excited at the next tournament before another round of turgid overhype and ultimate failure. This cannot continue. What's the alternative that so many man hours are invested in writing about, talking about and deliberating about?

I'm afraid we are the only ones who rate us and we need to culturally or a deep level admit we are sh*t.

Problem is we're not sh*t....and that almost smacks of the fear you're describing (although we have been playing sh*t).

We have the players to put in a good showing against most teams - we've just not been using them or using them correctly.
Too many square pegs round holes. To many of the "names" being crammed into a side instead of picking a balanced team set up to beat the opposition.
Whether that be Vardy not playing against an ancient Russian defence under Woy (when the lad could not stop scoring and ran fit young defences ragged - let alone some decrepit ones with an average age of 9000) or trying to shuffle Rooney into any position just to fit him into the team, rather than playing someone in-form who plays that position naturally, etc, etc.

I'd even argue that the little things like the national anthem matter. It's pride-inspiring seeing our rugby lads belting out the anthem before smashing 7 bells out of the opposition (and vice versa). It should be made clear that nothing less than this is expected in my book. I don't give a monkeys about the words of the song, have no real interest in the monarchy, but it's our anthem and I bet would lead to more team spirit in the end having everyone belting it out each time. Even watching Soccer AM at the weekend, and that nasty piece of work Vinny Jones, was decrying the "headphones on" culture, on the way to matches, in dressing rooms, etc. I don't like the guy but I bet he's right on that, and we should ban the use of headphones from training right up until kick off, and just allow them for the way home...if they really must.

Not sure Scholes was ever world class for England, mainly cos he was stuck out on the left. Possibly Beckham, and Terry at a push.
I was thinking more of the likes of Gerrard and Lampard who were world class club players but very "meh" when playing for england over the years

I agree those latter two never really hit their club heights internationally - probably in significant part due to being shoehorned together a lot. I think if you had to build a team around one of them it would have been Gerrard for me as I think he had more all round potential (and athleticism).

Sacrificing Scholes to accommodate Lampard and Gerrard. That was bonkers.

and cautious.

As Lamps or Gerrard to be continually sacrificed would have caused uproar when they were turning in such blinding performances in the league week after week.

The ironic thing is the manager never realised that by playing them both in tandem you were effectively sacrificing them both anyway as they weren't able to dovetail in the same way they did with a Makelele or a Hamman/or a Lucas

Agreed, but AC was also boo'd and abused by England for England fans without ever doing anything to warrant it on the pitch, although his off field activities were questionable to say the least.

He was booed for allowing a line in his autobiography that informed millions of football fans across the globe that he nearly crashed his car in disgust when he was only offered £55K on his new contract! And then players say they don't understand why fans get so upset when they don't play well even though they tried.

What's your point?

Wayne Rooney

Cole Lampard and Terry were mainly booed by the England fans who supported Arsenal Tottenham and West Ham.

That's why the England fans who support Football or Non League clubs are welcomed more by the players.

They support the team without getting club loyalties influencing them

Wayne Rooney

He deserves the recognition for having scored more goals for his country than anybody else ever, fantastic achievement.

Shame that some 'fans' feel the need to boo him.

Same with Scotland I think too.

Celtic fans support Ireland and Rangers England.

Wayne Rooney

I've always thought Rooney was over rated. A decent player who has world class moments very occasionally but don't think he deserves to be booed. It's pundits and some fans and journos who bigged him up so much to be better than he is just like they do with any half decent english player. He was the best of a bad bunch who got built up as something he's not. Can't fault his effort and determination though.

Wayne Rooney

I think the issue is that Rooney - more specifically what he currently contributes to a team playing the way the game is now being played - does not fit into that style of play. A fast-paced game, with high-pressing and overlapping full-backs, requires a certain type of central player, whether striker or midfield, that also is very mobile. I can't say I watched all of the England-Malta game but it seemed incredibly pedestrian, often with Rooney stationary with his foot on the ball, playing the Wilkins role. The question is not whether to play Rooney or not but who are the best players for the central midfield to play that style.

Wayne Rooney

This 14 goals in 14 qualifiers stat is so misleading, such week opposition. How about we look at his tournament performance.

we wouldn't have qualified for many without him.

Wayne Rooney

Firstly I will say that Rooney is not the answer now going forward and deserves a nice send off at Wembley to say goodbye. We need to be building a team and that takes time and you shouldn’t build it around a player who you are not sure will ever regain his form.

Anybody who boooed Rooney during the game V Malta, needs to show a little bit of respect to the guy. He has always given 100% for the team, never said no or tried to blow out a trip to deepest eastern Europe etc and any blips in his behaviour and media savvy needs to be balanced with the fact Rooney is not the sharpest and his roots are in the estates of Liverpool and not the shires.

In his prime he was only player in the last 10 years that the opposition really feared.

Pretty much agree with this.

Still worth a place in the squad. Not worthy of a start.

I think the booing in this instance is more that he's still playing rather than a particular gripe with him for not doing something. So although it's booing at him - I think the "malice" of it is more directed at the manager - intended to show their disapproval of his selection rather than his performance.

Wayne Rooney

I think you're right but its not great. booing our top goalscorer

Wayne Rooney

Technically true but I'm pretty sure that a replacement would have done just as well, or at least the team would have qualified without him

My 8 year old son is just going through every Premier League club and writing down each clubs English players as he wants to pick his squad!!
It is when you do this and factor in that Rooney replacement during the last qualifiers, were the likes of Rickie Lambert with Sturridge & Welbeck injured for large parts, that we may well have struggled to qualify without Rooney goals and indeed assists. The cupboard although not bare isn't great and Rooney is patriotic, plays in a multitude of positions asked of him and will always try his best for the country. He didn't ask to be over hyped and when England perform poorly it isn't just down to him, plenty have been worse.

Wayne Rooney

People are quick to jump on the bandwagon....................... Think some need to remember how crap Joe Hart and Harry Kane and a couple others were in the Euros.

Still find it laughable that we as supporters can boo one of our best serving players........... Most players in his position are adored. Sadly for England players this is never the case.

He may have been oveer hyped by the media etc, but hes always turned up and always gave it his all.

Rooney wasnt awful in the slightest at the Euros.
Was our second BEST player

Wayne Rooney

So why are the fans and media booing him then?

I think people see him as our Sam Saunders. Did a job for us in the past but his time has gone and we should be building/playing a team for the future with people in their natural positions not fitted in because of the past or their name/captaincy/etc

So people think its beneficial to boo him? If the he was played in his natural position we might get somewhere. Likewise at Utd.

Problem is some expect him especially in the past to win us World cups and Euros on his own.

I will clap and respect him for his service. And at 31 i still think hes a class act.
