Reminds me of the Said situation last Summer. Lots of interest and the player was clearly open to moving but we would not budge and he ended up sitting out games (both pre season and first couple of games)...... Raya seems like a level headed chap, hope he takes it as a challenge to be a top keeper for us this season and then he will get his Premiership chance, hopefully with us.

David Raya

This all depends how much of a gentleman Raya is. As others have said.. will he be all Tarks about it, or knuckle down like Said.

If they stumped up £20+ then yeah we'd have to consider selling.

My belief is that there is no way are we going to undermine all the other investments by selling Rays even for 20 million. Finding another keeper who could be a springboard for our way of playing could not be achieved short term. I like Daniels but he ain’t the man. As others have said if he plays up it may become tricky but hopefully this is where the no dickheads rule plays dividends

Agree with that, but they'd need to stump up a lot more than a score... ;)

The math doesn't add up as far as I can see.

Arse want at least £20m for Martinez so they can put money towards a midfielder. But they would need to pay, say, + - £15m for Raya. That only leaves a few million towards their much needed outfielder.

If Arse sell Martinez to Villa I think they will buy an experienced 30 something keeper as cover for a few million - £3m tops. Someone who will take the money and sit on the bench.

But who knows!

Someone like Joe Hart who went to Tottenham.

Hmmmm... if someone offers £20million for Raya, he'll be gone, there's *no way* the club would turn down that sort of money. That would be unheard of for a championship goalkeeper. But are Arsenal really going to pay that? Unlikely.

The club must have "just in case" goalkeeping targets lined up, were a mammoth bid to materialise... and the transfer window is open for another month. We could absolutely adapt, and I think the club trusts Daniels to start a first few games especially as they keep giving him the armband in friendlies.

David Raya

Every player has their price...imo a goalie is fairly replaceable.....

David Raya

Not for sale , close thread

If the Gooners wave anything above 12m and he wants to go, it'll happen.

David Raya

Was he at training today, Tweet from the club showed Watkins and Benrahma, but didn't see Raya.

It's a little more nuanced than that. Our dof's have targets in mind for every position. Let's face it, DR could have done an acl in training and they would immediately know who is on our list to replace him. Our willingness to budge will be somewhat determined by their belief they can get one of their top targets - or not. And let's face it, typically in a situation like this, we will only sell for top $ and then replace him with someone cheaper who will turn out to be as good or very very close. How many times has a star player gone and we all think b****r. We will never replace him. And more often than not we buy or promote a cheaper replacement who ups the bar even further

I wouldnt be massively worried if Daniels stepped up tbh. Hes pretty solid imo and thats without getting a good run of games. Dare i say it maybe less mistakes on him aswell.

We're a better attacking side with Raya in it. Losing Ollie, Said and Raya would be tough IMO, but Raya aint going anywhere so it doesn't matter.

.....mabye the Arsenal will go for him instead then.

"Raya aint going anywhere" I would not risk too much money on that statement!

I would, would hugely affect the way we play..

I agree with that. IMO a keeper's priority are safe hands and good with crosses. Every keeper at this level can make great saves and Daniels has done that. In some respects part of Raya's contribution to attacking is nullified by the high press.Part of sussing us out. Raya has made great saves but he also cost us on occasion. So the way l see it is a straight trade off. Safe hands and no gifts vs creativity from the back but with some woopsies thrown in.
I'd go for the money and not stand in his way.

TBH l think we can't expect to play the same way this coming season. Losing Ollie and Said takes a deal of expansiveness out of our play and we aren't going to be the same. Virtually every team will high press us too. I see the season's success being built on even better defending and workmanlike performances bringing consistent results. I can't see us ripping sides up like last season.

I would suggest that if Daniels had played 45+ games last year then we would have seen some mistakes too.

Can’t remember a keeper who hasn’t made a few mistakes in a season. Raya made fewer than most (definitely fewer than Bentley) and I bet that Daniels would make more. Anybody can have safe hands when they’re sitting on the bench.

I agree, Raya is significantly streets ahead of Daniels - yes he did make a couple of errors but he is wonderful in catching crosses, quick on his feet and I'm sure we would've conceded far more goals if Daniels was playing.

David Raya

I would hazard a guess that at this moment our scouts are scouring Europe for a replacement, and possibly someone better than DR.

Yes, probably, but not for this season

I disagree. If we're subject to a high press then a keeper who can pick out an accurate long pass or throw is a massive asset. Equally whilst we'll definitely miss Benhrama's magic we will still have DaSilva, Dalsgaard, Henry, Jensen, Mbuemo, Norgaard. Marcondes et al who were responsible for creating opportunities last season, all with an added bonus of a years experience of playing Championship football together. Toney looks like he might well fit in very well and then we've got players like Baptiste, Zamburek coming through who aren't just average cloggers. Plus whoever we bring in with the money we've made. I'm pretty excited about whoever that will be and I've a feeling Mbuemo and DaSilva will really hit the heights this season..

We succession plan based on our timescales. We've progressed as a club and don't plan on selling a player after one year hence why we've said he's genuinely not for sale at this time.

Embedding a new GK into our style of play after the season has started is not something we do.

As Hobbsy said, we'll be looking at options for next season if anything.

I do not dispute a word you say, however, if Arsenal are prepared to pay over the odds, and the player creates a fuss then all bets are off1

David Raya

If Villa are prepared to pay 20m to Arsenal for a keeper what's to stop them offering us 20m for Raya if their initial target falls through?

Interesting couple of weeks coming up!

Surely this can't happen... Maybe rasmus and Phil are just buying time to figure out how to negotiate the deal. Imagine if balogun was part of it.... I need to stop dreaming.

Or potentially and more probably they are just trolling arsenal as they wouldn't speak to us about Balogun haha.

He doesn't hold the ball cleanly enough at all. If I was an opposition manager id have my strikers literally on top of him because of his handling. Don't get me wrong, he's good, but we are aiming for promotion surely

David Raya

I wonder if David got some flack from people after the Fuc*um free kick and wants a fresh start at a new club. Someone should tell him the Trotter story who came back stronger after a huge cack up.
