FC Midtjylland

Stayed that way to my local side Odense. 12 points clear of FCK who have one game in hand which on form they should win. Big match next Sunday: FCM v FCK.

There was an interesting interview with Rasmus Ankersen on The Wednesday Night Club on 5 Live this evening talking about recruitment and statistical modelling at FC Midtjylland saying how it all starting working when MB bought the majority share in the club in the summer last year. Predictably, the people in the studio then basically rubbished the whole concept especially that dinosaur David Pleat who said that "the guy at Brentford" is losing his job because MB, who has never played or even been in a dressing room, want to just use stats! The idiot couldn't even remember MW's name! As for his Bill Nicholson anecdote....well  :banghead:

To be honest, the more people in football with David Pleat's archaic view of the world the more chance we have of the Moneyball approach working. From the baseball example, Oakland Athletics massively outperformed their wage bill for a couple of years but then the other big teams caught on and implemented the same approach. Competitive advantage was lost (or diminished) - hopefully we'll be holding our own in the top division by the time that happens!

I heard this interview and picked up this gem from the Danish chap....

As well as recruiting players using stats such as goals, assists, passes, blocks, saves, etc...Benham's system also allows for so called "No Stat / All Stars"
Players whose value is only noticed when they are not in the team - Players who do not maybe feature so highly in the stats but do the "unseen work"
So there is a place for Toumani anjd Douglas in the moneyball system after all....

FC Midtjylland

Douglas doesn't appear on the system as there is no criteria for unseen work otherwise Council bods like myself would playing top flight football

FC Midtjylland

Can anyone fill me in on what style FCM play -as I can't be bothered to go through every post on the thread!

Is it pure pass and move or hooof long ball ?

Intrigued after this Guardian article.

Incidentally I see they play Copenhagen on Sunday at home with a win confirming the title barring some GD heroics.

How easy is it to get tickets at this late stage? We are in hvide sande from Saturday for a week. Me and the Mrs want to ditch the kids with the family and get across to this if we can get tickets.

I've just been in Holland on business. I spent 2 days in meetings with guys from Holland, Germany, Belgium and France. What I found brilliant and a more than a little amazing was just how many of them knew about the FCM story. They hadn't realised that the visionary and brilliant owner of FCM was the same guy that owns FC Brentford!!

On the back of this I'm delighted to say that I've got at least 25 new BFC fans from all over Europe who will be looking out for us and FCM from now on. :D

Can anyone remind me why David Pleat isn't still working as a manager......:banghead:

Way past his sell by date, might have something to do with that fact that he fails to grasp that football and techniques have moved on greatly since his time, one of those many dinosaurs that still live in the past.

There are no dinosaurs that still live in the past ........ ;)

With very few if any exceptions people don't buy football clubs to make money , do we all agree ?...............so the fact that our owner is "one of us" and a life long Brentford supporter I wonder why he bought a controlling interest in a Danish football club................just wondering ?

believe that he answered this in his GPG Q&A session.

I once interviewed to head up the global procurement team for a large bank and was asked what my aims would be. In answering, I asked what they'd consider to be success for the department. The answer was "if nobody is even aware it exists".

A question was asked similar to yours and the answer MB gave is below. If this is what you were wondering? :)

You are staying close by, and the ground holds 11,800, but this is the big match, and the website unfortunately shows 'Udsoldt' - sold out, as you probably know http://billetsalg.fcm.dk

Thanks for the reply. We only realised today how close this was else we would have sorted it earlier. Unbeknown to me, my wife sent MB a note on Facebook asking if there were any tickets left and he replied within 90 minutes (top man) there wasn't. We will just probably stop enroute to check the stadium out.. Good luck.

It took him too long to drive to the training ground.

I have an idea why he still manages to stay "involved" in the game, mind.

When Glenn Hoddle was manager at Spurs, Pleat was already Director of Football.

Anyhow, some journalist (can't remember which) disclosed that after he had reported on some game which Spurs had lost, he received a call from Pleat, asking why the journo had gone so easy on Hoddle in his report (the team was full of internationals, the other team's form was poor etc).

And while journo's are normally loathe to disclose details of their contacts, this one was so disgusted by Pleat briefing privately against his own manager, he decided to go public.

Meanwhile, when Hoddle was sacked (in Sept 2003), guess who was appointed as his successor until the end of the season?

Interesting interview and in many ways very strange. Here was presented clear evidence that MBs approach has worked and yet he and his methodology were still being rubbished by "experts" very much in denial. We are rapidly becoming the "odd one out" amongst English football clubs, ridiculed and discarded as eccentric and run by someone who has no idea what he is doing. Next season could just be mind-blowing for us and for football in general.

If you are on Twitter try contacting Hekler (@Hekler4u) he is a FCM fan and also follows the Bees with interest since MB bought them. He might be able to tell you if there are any tickets locally. There is always someone who can't go at the last minute, so you never know...

Appreciate the info RE but neither of us on Twitter. We may ask at the stadium as we pass by if someone is there.

What, Ankersen? Think he is Chairman, not DOF.

“We believe a lot in improving the professionalism of players,” he says. “We’ve never understood why a football player shouldn’t be as professional as an individual athlete. An individual athlete optimizes every single part of his game. Nutrition, everything in small details. But football players don’t do that. Why not? We think there’s a big opportunity there.”

Pleased/interested to see this emphasised alongside analytics. Football has always seemed so far behind in this area - particularly in comparison to endurance sports. If 'marginal gains' has become become a cliché, value of 'optimisation' cannot be overstated.

Top 2 played today . FCM beat FC Copenhagen 2-0 . 12 pts clear now . Not sure how many games left but this league is done and dusted .

Benhams first stats based title.

Four I believe which with a +17 better GD than their nearest rivals effectively makes them Champions. :sorted:

Thanks for the link. Due to car hire issues (office shut on arrival at Aarhus and then not having the kids car seats available as requested) we were very late getting to our destination. We did see the stadium from the motorway and will be stopping off on our way back. Spent yesterday watching Magdeburg game on TV drinking lots of beer and schnapps!

Benham gave an interview in Denmark yesterday where he confirmed no FCM players to Brentford this summer. Mainly as being Danish title winners the Championship wouldn't suit them.

However he said should Brentford ever get to the Premier League then bringing players to London from Denmark was a possibility.

FC Midtjylland

And Champions league qualifyinf within 4-5 years.

Seems that the article has been edited to remove the reference to Champions League? It has also added a caveat around the model rating us 11th best in the league (by end of season it rated us 5th best, was added, it appears). Would guess this was at the request of MB...

Great article though, and can't help but leave you excited for the future.

Fair play to them if they have edited on on the request of MB. Not many would do that.
