I'm a firm believer that if a player gets to 21/22 and hasn't been able to eradicate that from his game, he rarely does.

Don't agree, depends who he's played with and alongside, you need the right blend to bring out the best and develop players.
Tarks needs to learn quickly I agree but given the ages and lack of experience of all the back 5 at this level it's hardly surprising they switch off at times.
Moses is new to right back, Jake has grown up with us and first season at this level, likewise James and Harlee.
We need a Championship version of Tony Craig at the back and a Championship version of Macca in midfield and if we get that , keep those we have and get a couple of decent forwards we'll be just fine.

James Tarkowski -

hasn't learnt from his mistakes over the season, no doubting his ability but his concentration levels aren't up to scratch at the moment so I'm undecided whether or not he's the answer

Could it be he needs a better partnership, also he's not a player who can regularly hit a telling pass out from the back, yes he did one to Jota in the first half

James Tarkowski -

The whole team needs to be on its game to take the pressure off defenders distributing from the back. If the midfield aren't or can't make passing options because they are closed down or too tired, and the single forward, who doesn't head it, is marked by at least two opponents so the ball comes back pronto, then the defenders are looking to play miracle passes a number of times a game. Other teams just wait for a miracle. When we are playing well and scoring it is a different game and a different performance at the back. Our back four lack experience and need help to be organised and focused during the game. They don't always get this help I don't think. Tony Craig for all his limitations often supplied this to the younger team mates. I still think of what could have been this season but also that they have done really well and given us a lot of pride, enjoyment and entertainment this season.

Are you a firm believer that players are unlikely develop beyond their 22nd birthday? Or am I extrapolating unkindly? Certainly would be a pretty pessimistic and depressing thought.

Of course not. Players develop technically, physically and improve with experience and understanding. The point I'm making is that players who display a tendency to lose concentration and focus need to eliminate that trait at an early age. Otherwise, it tends to haunt them throughout their career. There are loads of examples of players who have great ability but never make it to the higher levels because of that very issue. Remember Sam Sodje?

James Tarkowski -

I think his best position is playing the right side CB as he's naturally right footed and he looks more comfortable and composed there. In my humble opinion I like seeing left footed players playing left CB and LB to give balance. This is his first season at this level and he seems a strong character who will be better for the experience next season hopefully in his natural position and playing for us. The second Bolton goal highlighted him playing in the wrong position. He was in the LB area when he received the back pass from Toums and under it a pass with his right foot to Button that put him under pressure. A naturally left footed player would have received the pass from Toums on his left foot and had a split second more time to have played the ball down the left side to a player in space or back to Toums.

He was several years older when he joined us though wasn't he ?

James Tarkowski -

The team is knackered. With the obvious exceptions, a lot of starting 11 have been ever present and that has gradually taken its toll recently. I have no doubt about the talent of the squad and Warburton, though I respected his reasoning, was naive not to strengthen when he had the chance.

James Tarkowski -

Yes, and we (Martin Allen) made him a much better footballer. He developed superbly during his time here but the lack of concentration was already deeply embedded.

James Tarkowski -

What is the best solution. Do we get rid of the current selected CBs or let them develop. If they are that bad who are going to buy them. Questions to be answered by the new manager.

James Tarkowski -

the squad have played out of their skins and above all expectations for the vast majority of the campaign. every game has been like a cup tie.

yes, most of them are now knackered.

we would all have taken a top ten finish last august.

most of the squad will come back better and stronger and with a season in the championship football under their belts.

one or two will move on and one or two will come in but it has been an outstanding season. the best season for 40+ years.

James Tarkowski -

It's not an excuse, but surely part of the reason is that we tend to have so much possession. Hard to maintain concentration when you are not defending throughout the match. I just wish we could put more chances away while we have the possession we have!

But the defense are usually involved in the play its not asif theyre bypassed and then stood there doing nothing. If anything most of the unforced errors have been naivety/arrogance at times and as others have said just lack of concentration that you must have at all times playing in one of the best leagues in the world

Let them develop when needed as back-up and get in a tall. big and experienced defence which the new manager will do!

seeing the goal again it was A poor throw to toumami, a poor ball to tarky and another poor ball to the keeper who probably shd have crashed thorough the striker

Toumani's pass that went a stray for their 1st goal aswell..

Yep, all three of them were responsble. It was the sort of play you would expect in a pre-season friendly against a non-league team.

James Tarkowski -

Toumani's pass that went a stray for their 1st goal aswell..

Not to blame for the second though. It was an ill-judged throw from Button (seems to happen at least once each game) that Toumani dealt with reasonably in a no-win situation. Tarks should have hoofed it, and Button should have been stronger from the underhit back pass. Frustratingly avoidable but such a goal has been in the offing for some time. I'm all for playing it out from the back but not when this means throwing the ball to players who immediately come under pressure.

For the second it looks as though he got his feet in a tangle and thats where the problems started

I too am all for playing from the back but football is not a complicated game. You play from the back when not under pressure, as soon as you are, then you launch it.
We can eulogise till kingdom come on Warbs' very pleasing style of play but that is Sunday League basic stuff!
If we miss out on the play-offs because of that goal then I will be glad of the coming changes. Indefensible and unacceptable. I've lost a tad of respect for Warbs the amount of times he has said " we'll learn from it" - you haven't! and the defence were still pissing around with it once or twice soon after that goal. still absolutely fuming with the situation and how Ipswich must be astounded at our naivety. Also, as proud as I was to see Harlee throwing himself around in the dying seconds it was at the same time laughable.

We won't miss out because of that goal, the same way we didn't miss out because of "that penalty". Events prior to those few seconds took care of that i.e. last Saturday at Derby, not playing t the whistle v Norwich, the linesman saying Andre Gray was offside at home to Wednesday. Similarly there is a list of things that led up to the penalty being the focus that year such as not beating Hartlepool the week before.

The season may end up being judged on one incident but the dye had been cast prior to that

Granted and I get it, but none of those things were so blindingly within our control as that debacle. You see better defending in an under 12's game ffs.

What about Dean leaving the header v Middlesboro when Tarks clearly shouted "Head it". BTW thats not a go at Dean thats another example of things being within our gift that we cocked up

To a sub 6ft target man, yeah that would work...the whole point behind playing it out from the back is to draw the opposition forward/midfield to you so that you can exploit any spaces they inevitably leave behind in midfield. How we perfect that is really down to the coaching. Someone like Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Klopp recently at Dortmund, is famous for forcing players to train on a pitch that resembles a diamond in shape. This ruled out long passes down the touchlines and instead focused players on perfecting their shorter passing.

You could pick out many of course and many shots missed etc. But they were all in normal game play so I accept them. Trotta's pen was bad luck. That goal was nothing to do with bad luck or a bad snap decision, it was sheer stupidity from the players and ultimately the coaching staff who obviously tell them to try and play out of extreme duress rather than get rid.

Who's talking about a pass?
When you get in as much trouble as they managed to do it should have gone in Brook road and then defend the corner.

I understand why we play as we do. You can talk about diamond pitches and pitch geography all you like, but there is always a time to put your foot through the ball. In this instance they didn't "take care of the football" did they?

Button didn't throw it out, he passed it. Tarks pass back to Button was just far too soft and left Button racing to the ball with little chance to hoof it. I'm a huge fan of Tarky, and reckon he should be a regular alongside a more experienced CB (taking nothing away from Harlee, who is great but doesn't have the same potential IMO), but this one was his fault.

It's individual players' decision making which is costing us. I expected some difficulties earlier in the season as we found our feet but they've been passing the ball out from the back long enough now to be able to recognise when the short ball isn't on. That's not a fault of the coaching IMO but of the players themselves.

Possibly it's both. They seem scared to hoof it in any situation.

Button shouldnt of been left in that position by tarks but button should of smashed it , even if it cannoned off davies and went in then we could of just held our hands up and say fair enough but im not going to slate button hes been integral.

James Tarkowski -

Button has had a great season, he has saved us far more points than he has cost us and improved beyond recognition from the bloke I saw rooted to his line and trying to dribble past Zoko at Stevenage last season.......................................................until Saturday lol

To be fair his bloopers are few and far between and if he is capable of Grobelaar like moments of madness he is equally capable of breath taking brilliance in saving certain goals and providing assists for them at the other end. He was culpable Saturday but think we owe him forgiveness on that one.

Agree apart from the culpable on sat bit

Agree apart from the culpable on sat bit

It was a crap back pass but go be fair he could have put ball and player in the top tier of the wendy house.......but moving forward I think he is outstanding and the best keeper in the division...hope we can keep hold of him.

James Tarkowski -

Poor by all three players but Button should have launched the ball into row Z when he had the chance but I've no problem with that has he's been brilliant for for most of the season.

Agree. Bad pass but should have whacked it out.

James Tarkowski -

The anti-Harlee brigade should take note of the phrase in that article when it says: "He (tarks) could improve his concentration, with no outfielder committing more errors leading to a shot (six) this season."
Also on the stats site it lists Tarks significant weaknesses as concentration (seems about right to me) and that Harlee has none.
Now I'm not saying that Harlee is better or has more potential though I am saying that the evidence backs up the fact Harlee isn't the worst offender for mistakes and gets OTT stick at times.

Played well but why oh why did he take the pen.................... lol never mind we are in the Championship Playoffs.

Bet he was relieved that miss didn't cost us a play off spot!

One poor pass could've cost us, but played superbly once again, shame about the penalty!!

Thought Warbs had said that Tarky wouldn't take another one, after his miss against Leeds, or was that someone on here?

does he still take a good penalty in training? no more please..

If he didn't, that's what Warbs should have said. Why not give it to Jota ?

Jota turned it down.

Macca and Jota seemed to discuss it, with Jota shaking his head, and then Tarky took the ball.

I was hoping Macca would take it....

I'm amazed. He can do everything else, surely he can take a decent penalty ?
