I think Monk without Pep might be the problem...
Clotet wasn't with him all along though was he? Thought Monks best results were at start when Curtis was his main assistant.

Managerial Changes Thread 2017 / 2018

Is this true, or have you just seen the Get West London headline which I think was just one of their New Year predictions? Haven't seen it reported elsewhere.

It does, indeed, appear to be fake news.

Along with QPR being above us by 2 Jan. To$$ers.

Pulis new Middlesbrough manager.

Managerial Changes Thread 2017 / 2018

Blimey. Sees more chance of PL football with Boro than Swansea and obviously overlooked for the Wales job!

Let’s see how good how is and his brand of football is in the Championship!

Managerial Changes Thread 2017 / 2018

If they thought Karanka's football was negative, boy are they going to love Pulis.

I don't think he's as negative as Karanka was. More industrial, maybe.
'Boro's priority is simply to return to the Premiership.
They can ditch him if, once they're there, it doesn't work out.
Good appointment, all things considered.

Swansea appoint the annoying whining Carlos Carvalhal.

Managerial Changes Thread 2017 / 2018

Strange, unsuccessful at Championship level despite massive funds and so Swansea appoint him to keep them in the league above, go figure?

Very odd. Perhaps the thinking is that after half a season of that the fans will get over their "must play the Swansea way" and be more open to Pulis joining to get them promoted after he's been sacked after taking Boro up.

Or just the typical bizarre thinking of many clubs who haven't a clue what they're doing these days.

More likely Swansea have almost accepted their fate and have appointed a manager with Championship experience to get them back out again!

Let's not forget he took Wednesday to two Championshop play offs, he's no mug.

Possibly but you could have taken them there with the funds he's had.

Maybe, maybe not. Throwing money at the problem isn't always the answer in the Championship, you need more than that.

Statistically, only one in three relegated Premiership sides get promoted back in their first season. That means two of them languish in the Championship for varying lengths of time. You only need to look at the number of big wealthy clubs currently playing in the Championship and those currently receiving parachute payments to know that money isn't the answer.

I honestly can't remember the statistic, I remember seeing it a while ago, but there's a very high percentage of Championship Clubs who've played top flight football in recent times. We are one of a handful of clubs currently in the Championship who've never played in the top flight in recent times.

The Championship is a very tough division to get out of and luck plays a huge part in achieving it.

I've always liked the way Carvalho set his Wednesday sides up, they're a good blend of experienced pro's and young talent playing attacking football. It remains to be seen how well he gets on at Swansea, but it may turn out to be a shrewd appointment.

Far shrewder in my mind than Wednesday appointing that numpty McClaren, if they appoint him.

Think Carvahal got into a bit of a similar situation to Rosler with us, where he was afraid to let his players off the leash and play with freedom.

I read an interesting article recently which was talking about how Swansea got promoted, and established as a top flight club, playing free flowing, expansive football. The desperation to keep them in the Prem (and to retain the value of the club ahead of the recent sale) has seen them abandon this approach, which has actually dragged them closer to relegation, doing more damage to the value of the club (the very thing they tried to avoid initially). This appointment seems to underline the desperation.

Swansea originally seemed to have a settled approach with succession planning which, apparently although unproven, had Dennis Bergkamp lined up as Laudrup's eventual successor. They had to appoint Monk hastily which initially appeared to work but their recent appointments have been poor and they look doomed even at half way through the season. I always saw them as a partial influence on BFC what with their new ground and style of football. Shame what's happened to them.

I saw Swansea as a brave, gung ho, play the right way type team that worked until they sacked Gary Monk.
Now they're nailed on for Championship next season.

Warburton sacked by Forest.

Sooner or later there will be a call put in seeking permission to talk to DS. Plenty of vacancies about , i'd be amazed if he wasn't on a couple of clubs' radars tbh

But as a newspaper said, it’s not just DS, it’s the backtoom staff - DoFs, coaches, analysts etc - that make the complete package. DS could go somewhere and have little impact. Brentford will continue doing it their own way, there will be a replacement, but DS will find it hard somewhere else in the Championship, IMO.

Agree with you WP but not sure some of the clubs give it as much thought as you have ;)

Having said that if i was a Sheff Weds fan, for example, i'd rather be in for someone on the way up like DS than the likes of McLeish, Lambert , McLaren etc who have all been linked with that job

Absolutely agree.

If Smith has any sense, he'll stay exactly where he is and reject all offers of a move regardless of where they're to.

Exactly! Rosler was successful at Brentford. Not elsewhere. Warburton successful at Brentford. Not elsewhere. The common denominator is the Structure. Not the Head Coach / Manager.

DS is an intelligent guy and I am sure is fully aware of this.

Forest have an owner with money and little else. The setup is barely there. Ditto Birmingham.

She was the second most hated person at Charlton before she resigned this week.

Don't any Bees fans complain about our set-up.
We are so fortunate when you consider the decisions made by other league clubs.

Clough to Notts Forest? Taken Burton as far as they'll go.
According to this, Forest have had 26 managers in the last 20 years!
http://www.soccerbase.com/teams/team.sd?team_id=1845&teamTabs=managers

The owner is, shall we say, a colourful character, the senior management is less than (ahem) stable, the team is floundering; their finances can't be too healthy and the expectations of all concerned with the club are perennially "optimistic" (for which read insane).

Whereas Burton are none of those things - quite the opposite, in fact.

Who knows, however, maybe Clough might persuade himself that he's the man finally to turn things round?

Personally I think he'd be madder than a very mad thing on a particularly mad day in Madsville.
