Thanks for the explanation abee - I really can't get my head around why people don't understand the situation you seem to have to trot out each time.
I don't mind if I have time. I know that supporters are anxious for as much information as they can get and particularly reassurance that we are actually doing something. However I'm happy to see the Club move away from the ' we have made an enquiry about' type of press release and usually from clubs at our level who have not a chance in hell of actually signing the player in the report. My experience from talking to CEO's at other clubs is that the 'enquiry' is usually along the following lines :
Ring ring.......'Hi this is Jason Cutthroat. How can I help?'
Club : 'Hello Jason. I believe that you are Tarquin Netbuster's agent and I'm the CEO at xxxxx the well established almost bust League One club and just wondering about the availability of Tarquin and what sort of monies he'd be looking for'.
Agent : 'Well we'd be starting talks at £15,000 a week. Do you want to continue this conversation or shall we close out now?'
Club : 'Well that's a lot more than we've ever paid any player before in our history but he is a 'name' and we could I guess flog a lot of shirts and gamble on a run of season ticket sales. Fifteen grand a week eh? Let me have a think'.
Agent : 'I don't think you've got the hang of this. The fifteen grand is to tempt Tarquin to pitch up for training. If you actually want him to play matches then we're talking serious add-ons here which would get my main man up to the thirty grand a week plus image rights bracket. And then I'd be looking for a hundred grand for myself to facilitate the deal'.
Club : 'Gulp. Look my wife's on the other line and wants to talk to me about our dog who's got distemper. Can I get back to you?'
Agent hangs up.
One hour later the football reporter from the local Slugchester Gazette phones the CEO. 'Anything for me pal; I've got a deadline looming'
CEO : 'Erm well........you didn't get it from me but we've made enquiries abour Tarquin Netbuster who is a free agent.'
Reporter : 'Wow. That'll get the fans excited. Cheers mate. Talk soon'.
One hour later on line local paper report that Tarquin Netbuster is a target for club X also confirmed by ticker tape on SSN followed by GPG posts two minutes later on the lines : 'Brentford you've ****ed up again'.
That's the reality of much the crap that you read in the press.
