So now we got a Mcracken situation where I'm sure one of the CB's will most probably wanna go because of lack of games so do we sell or loan that player out. 4 good cb's who will wanna play!! Maybe KO could be off to charlton maybe Legge is off? Who would u not mind leaving?

I have been looking around on the web and have got the impression, perhaps wrongly, that Herr Eger has only played a handful of games in the last couple of seasons. Does anyone know if this is correct or if he has been injured or something?

Yes it looks like he only played 7 in the Bundesliga, but played a lot more when they were (twice) in the League below.

I think McCracken's lack of games was because he was "frozen out" and not just because he was one of four CB's. We need competition in every position and a manager's job is to keep his squad motivated; why can't people see beyond the first eleven?

The skull and crossbones is cool enough, but the actual badge is too Reading FC for my liking.

Two players for each position - what's problematic about that? I can't imagine people complaining if we had two good wingers competing for one spot? In fact, I'd imagine nothing but complaints that we only had one option/couldn't change it around/no cover for injuries etc.

I,m here....St Pauli is a club like Wimbledon in the 80's and 90's..Just as Crazy and the fans are even crazier ( Hope i spelt that right )..They follow there Club through thick and thin and are known to be the most Loyal fans in Germany..St Pauli dont however play like Wimbledon used to ( Hoofball )..And because they didnt have the quality in depth it cost them there Bundesliga status in the end..Regarding Marcel, i have a few friends here who are X St Pauli players and i will get some info about him for you all tomorrow..My personal opinion is that he is probably a very good Championship player, which of course is GREAT for Brentford..

big difference-wingers are players who reguarly are subbed on/off to change games. Meaning any squad players on the bench can get some game time at least.

Centre backs generally play 90 minutes bar injuries.

Yeah that's the one. It might be unofficial but that skull and crossbones logo is all over their official site.

A quality defence that concedes no goals means we only need to fluke one up the other end and bingo we have 3 points :sorted:

That's rather unambitious. We really need a 45 goal striker, then we can be fairly confident he'll manage to get us at least 25 next season in the championship.

So..As promised a little bit of info about Mr Eger.. I spoke with someone who knows him and also played at St Pauli..Says he's the type of player who can play football out of the back, and is not afraid to have the ball at his feet in defence as he is good on the ball..He also likes to get forward and is a good passer of the ball who will feed the forwards well..Good in the air and overall looks like a very good signing for Brentford..The question is will he / can he adapt to the way our game is played..These questions will be answered in about 6-7 weeks..

Thanks Bliss.Looks like good news. Not sure whether you mean how the game is played by us or in League 1 generally. Regarding us I think it's fair to say that we will be trying to keep the ball [ Uwe's words] and most successful teams in League 1 are now playing to feet rather than hoofing.

I’m a St Pauli as well as a Bees fan such as you can be from afar, and in fact was at the last game of the season at the Millerntor (St Pauli’s ground) back in May, which, in case you missed it, finished St Pauli 1 (Eger!) Bayern Munich 8, and put the cap on a woefully disappointing season for St Pauli.

So assuming he starts, or at least features, in the Yeovil game (and I hope he will), I’ll have been willing him on in two successive competitive games in different colours.

In fact, if ever you visit the ground (and St Pauli fans truly are as unique and wonderful as the reputation that goes before them), and visit the “official supporters’ pub” across the way, the Jolly Roger (http://www.myspace.com/jollyrogerhh), you’ll notice a Bees pennant in the middle of the main wall, in amongst memorabilia from visitors from clubs all over. I put it there on my first visit several years ago, and it’s stayed ever since, which I’m kind of chuffed about.

I like Eger a lot, actually, though the defence last season collectively suffered from chops and changes, many injuries, and general poor form. I can’t really add much to Bliss’ analysis, particularly as it’s not the same when you can’t watch a player week in, week out, but yes, that’s certainly him on a good day ;). He’s a football-playing footballer, for sure, not a hoofer and hacker. He’s versatile and can play anywhere across the back and push into midfield, so yeah, the obvious “in for K O’C?” thought of course comes to mind. I’ve only skimmed the back posts (don’t visit here that often, sorry), so I daresay you’ve done that one to death already, but anyway my angle is “I’d have thought it had crossed Uwe’s mind…”.

He’s certainly been a very competent player over the years in Bundesliga 2, BUT I think it’s only at the upper levels of German football that you can make a like-for-like comparison with the standards over here, and even then there’s certainly not the strength in depth of the Premier League in the Bundesliga.

More than once I’ve watched games in Bundesliga 2 and thought “actually the Bees could fit in reasonably OK at this level”. Well, on a good day :). So it’s important to keep that in perspective. You can't just equate B2 and the Championship. But I would hope he could thrive in League One.

He was in and out of the side last season. Injured at one point I think, but I can't recall now - the whole thing was a mess. I was quite surprised that St Pauli let him go, and I imagine he would have wanted to stay on (he was released). He's certainly popular amongst the fans (but then again St Pauli people never get on anyone's case, yes, really...

I’ve never heard him speak English, but like in most German cities, the general ability to speak pretty good English is pretty much the norm amongst the residents of Hamburg, and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t.

Oh, and fwiw the Totenkopf (skull and crossbones) which has become synonymous with St Pauli, did indeed start off as unofficial, but has de facto been taken on board by the club, and indeed has even featured on official kit in recent seasons. It's on the corner flags! The symbolism is obvious (and actually matches St Pauli’s style when they can ‘go for it’, which certainly wasn’t last season), but also draws on the fact that Hamburg is a port with a ‘pirate’ heritage, and St Pauli is located right within the old dock area. The ‘only club in Hamburg’, and the cliché about most people from the city supporting them is actually true. Moneybags HSV are way out in the suburbs.

Probably the one area our three very good CBs are weak on, more lump it types although KO was perfecting some Hollywood 40 yard passes...

From St.Pauli myself, redpete brought this thread to my attention. Seen Eger in dozens of matches over the years and would rate him a good Bundesliga 2 player. It's true that he didn't get that much time on the pitch in recent seasons, his last season with a truly good record was 08/09 when he played 28 out of 34 games in Bundesliga 2. After that, other players were slightly better or there was simply no reason to shake up a successful defense. Center back Morena, captain of the team, was injured for a long time but showed such a good comeback in the following season, that he couldn't be ignored and the other two CB on offer - Thorandt and Gunesch - were slightly better and maybe it was something about personal sympathies as well.
After getting promoted to Bundesliga 1, we strengthened the defense even further with a brilliant young talent from Peru, Carlos Zambrano, so the chances for Eger to get time on the pitch got really slim. But as we had incredibly bad luck with at times 7 of our best players in the defense injured or banned, he got to play in 7 matches and did his job very ok - didn't win matches for us, but was perfectly able to cope with the level of playing. And scored a goal against mighty Bayern Munich. :sorted:
I guess he would've moved on to a different club much earlier if he wouldn't liked it so much at St.Pauli.
Another truth is: if he'd played a lot of matches in the promotion season to Bundesliga 1, he would have loads of good offers from decent German Bundesliga 2 teams and it'd be rather unlikely that he'd gone abroad to join a team in the 3rd. I think he even had some offers from Germany, but really wanted to go abroad and to England. He might prove to be a jewel for you, but we can never be certain about anything, that's the beauty of footie, isn't it? 8)

I don't know how good the quality of League 1 is, but I doubt that it is as good as Bundesliga 2. You can measure the quality best by comparing the budgets - St.Pauli will have a budget of about 21 million Euro (about 17.5 million GBP) next season, what's the Bee's like? Bundesliga 2 should be one of the best second leagues in the world as they are on - relatively - good TV money and a high average attendance. I'd expect an average of about 22,000 next season for us with about 15,000 of that season ticket holders. There's a big gap between the strongest and the weakest teams, though.

After all, Eger should easily have the skills to compete in League 1, is fit, not injury-prone (only 3 in the stats and all smaller incidents that didn't stop him for more than 1-2 weeks) and he's motivated as he really wanted to play in England, his girlfriend is studying there as well. That's what should count most of all for a pro player, but there's also his "performance" off the pitch, he's very approachable, likes music, DJed at fundraisers organised by fans and is an active supporter of Viva Con Agua, a project to bring clean water to 3rd world communities, initiated by his former team mate Benny Adrion. And he started his own bar in the St.Pauli district, together with another player, offering food and drinks from the region he's coming from, close to Stuttgart.
