Mark Phillips

Mark Phillips

Needs a season on loan as he will have no chance at GP, we won the league and he did well but was still not loved by the GP faithful. A good season elsewhere to show what he can do and then a triumphant return to us would be the way forward.

Mark Phillips

One more additional CB in I would suspect. Blackett might be the best option as he can also cover at LB if required.

Blackett certainly has the pace that sadly Bennett or Philips lacks. Blackett also turned down Luton recently.

They say Eastbourne's nice this time of year

Most people i know think he is a good player.

Mark Phillips

Great news. The unsung hero of last year.

Mark Phillips

Osborne is a good player with the potential to be very good but there are fans who will never get off his back.

Agree that we need anothe c back - even if Bennett signs. Bit worried about the latter as we would presumably have been told if he was at pre-season training yesterday. However any players who were on better terms at other clubs may not sign for us for a month as they may choose to take their 'redundancy' month. This could well apply to Bennett who presumably was on much better terms at Reading than we will be able to offer him - & I doubt if he will want to turn down up to £5k (at a guess) - who would??

Mark Phillips

What about Benett?

Jeez !

You guys want the moon on a stick....think how lucky we are to have a CB pairing of Osborne and Phillips in L1 next season...and count yourselves lucky...

Poor Old Dagenham and Redbrick are haemorrhaging players, and struggling to field an XI for the first pre-season game.
They have even had to call upon 45 year old chief steward and veteran player Tony Roberts to go between the sticks...

.........meanwhile moneybags Notts County are struggling to attract anyone to their club, despite the Billions invested by some dodgy sheik consortium...

Mark Phillips

Doesn’t look good if Philips and Wilson miss the Charlton game.

Mark Phillips

Might this not just be because he didn't want to play him last night to ensure we have at least one regular at CB on Saturday?

Mark Phillips

So glad he signed a new contract now. Has put in some excellent performances this season. A real leader on the park. Good work.

Mark Phillips

.............has had an exceptional start to the season.....long may it continue..............

Mark Phillips

I have a feeling that he will be slipping down the pecking order in the coming weeks. Wilson and Bennett next game I reckon.

Mark Phillips

unless he got a knock for Osborne to come on, maybe substituting his was the first crack. Bennett and Wilson for sure next week, which is ashame, but if your face fits.

Mark Phillips

If Wilson and Bennett are the best combination in the view of AS (and I think they probably are) then they should play and Phillips will have to fight for his place. Suspensions and injury often lead to a way back in anyway. Plus Wilson is only here for another three months.

Don't think we should get too misty eyed about this issue or think there are some personal issues going on.

Nail hit squarely on head I reckon.

As soon as I heard Scott dig out Phillips more than Bennett after the Swindon game, I thought that Phillips is on borrowed time, not Bennett, even though Bennett has been below par pretty much all season and Phillips has been pretty solid (in the games I've seen anyway). If this happens, imo, it does not reflect well on Scott - it would seem to suggest that either he has his favourites, or he doesn't have the bottle to drop one of his "big" players, i.e. his skipper & (possibly) his best paid player.

The thing is, the players themselves know who's playing well & who isn't. As soon as players sense that a manager has "favourites", that can cause unrest in the dressing room and that's when big problems start.

Perhaps after selling the virtues of Bennett to the board & paying (relatively) top dollar for him on wages, Scott feels his judgement of the player would be questioned by the board if said player is only on the bench?

Just a thought...

Mark Phillips

There's more conspiracies in this thread than surround Mandleson!

Phillips has been sound this season and has been MoM, putting in sterling performances while covering errors at RB and alongside him at CB.
AS spoke of Phillips by name because he was almost entirely responsible for the naive defending that lead to Swindon's 3rd goal. He did not blame him for the team's performance.
Phillips was taken off at Hartlepool because of cramp... although any number of conspiracy theories can be put forward.
AS seems to have a lot of faith in Bennett but my belief is that it is because Bennett, in addition to being captain, is a "captain" on the field without an obvious replacement. (IMHO Cort communicates a lot. :fishing:)

That's what worries me, AS thinks Bennett & Wilson are the best combination.

..................yet another good game last night..................

Mark Phillips

Saturdays team selection should be most interesting.

While there has been lots of mentions regarding Wilson's loan and an agreement that he has to play, of which no one has officially confirmed this, Mr Phillips deserves to retain his place, and I still think alongside Alan Bennett. They should be rewarded with proper full backs though, in Foster and Dickson, which leaves Wilson on the bench.......if that is the case next week then super, but if Wilson comes in at the expense of Foster or Phillips I will mark it in my notes regarding AS's managerial ability.

good point wilson is not needed KO come on and did a good job can we send him back to Bristol and save the money ?

Mark Phillips

TBH as much as I rate Wilson and think he is going to have a great future i'd be tempted to stick with the players who are contracted to brentford football club. Wilson helped us out when Bennett was injured but now everyone is fit and available i wouldn't bring Wilson back, he is a Bristol City player and come the latter half of the season we aren't going to be able to rely on him.

Unless of course AS and Bristol City extend his loan for the rest of the season in Jan 10:fishing:

Exactly.

What is to say that Scott wasn't after Wilson from the start of the season and didn't always plan to play Wilson and Bennett in the centre of his defence?

I don't think many would have argued if Wilson had been signed on August 3 and Bennett and he had started at Carlisle with Phillips on the bench. It may have been harsh but that's the decisions a manager has to make.

If Scott thinks Bennett and Wilson is his best partnership he should pick them. We may disagree but our opinion is completely irrelevant.

Mark Phillips

why dont we just solve the problem by playing 5 at the back and then dickson/foster can push down the wings?

just a thought....:fishing:

Mark Phillips

How do you know? And why make it so dramatic anyway, we're fortunate to have all of them to pick from.

Because of the reaction of AS towards Phillips after the Swindon game, I admit it wasn't one of Phillips best games, but he has been outstanding this season. On current form it should be who plays along side Phillips. Sorry for the over reaction on the previous post, but I've been very impressed with Phillips this season. I wasn't sure he could perform at the higher level, but clearly he can.

Mark Phillips

But they have been his first choice pairing until now. Their combined lack of pace is the problem which is why one of them needs to be replaced. As easy as it is for us to give our opinion, I think there are more issues than a potentially short term dip in form to consider if AS is going to drop his captain.

Mark Phillips

The way I see it is that Wilson was only signed because Bennett got injured against Norwich and was going to be out for a few weeks. Whether or not he tried to sign him before that, nobody knows but I think it is more than a co-incidence that it happened at that time. This suggests to me that Scott was happy with Bennett and Phillips and now has even more options with Wilson here until January.
