Have to disagree with you. The clothing you wear in a work environment should stimulate empathy not stratification. Everyone knows who is the boss. You might wear a suit if you are meeting people who also wear suits but that doesn't apply. I have decided to take up the issue of manager clothing as my cause celebre as it's been a bit dull on here since Uwe left. I fully expect the team photo to feature Warbs in a tracksuit. Eat with the troops.;)

Warbs is King and shouldn't eat with the troops.

Mark Warburton

Wearing a track suit shows you are still see yourself as really a player. That used to be ok in the past when managers were almost exclusively drawn from successful ex players. Nowadays the manager is more likely to have 'learnt' about the game not only from playing it but taking courses and reflecting on it. It is now much more professionalised.

I think Warburton has it right in his suit and tie. He had a successful career in the City so understands the signals a suit and tie send. The semiotics of male business dress is an interesting area but perhaps not many of us are really that interested in it. Suffice it to say a black suit signals seriousness and professionalism going back to the Quakers. Women in the City tend to wear black to show they should be taken seriously. I dare not get into ties as I fear those reading this may get somewhat queasy. But at one level the senior person in an organisation still wears a tie

Perhaps Warburton for our last game could go tieless? And chinos?

I reckon a Fedora and a Cuban Cigar as Malcolm Alison used to have. Now that's class. Oh and two playboy bunnies on each side.

Mark Warburton

The two forwards were signed up by Steve Perryman, as was most of that team. For me Holder was not as good as a lot of people think. Perryman left just before the start of that season, due to a rift with Lange. Warbs is the man.
I think PH was probably a very good Assistant Manager, who inherited a team which had been built by Perryman, kept it going for a couple of years, but then didn't quite have the all-round managerial skills to maintain/rebuild it himself as the Main Man.

Which is why he never worked as a Manager again, though he was subsequently an Assistant at a number of clubs.

Holder's problem was that he didn't appreciate that the football was different at the next level and couldn't make the transition. Bit like Scott IMO. However, to be fair to him I think we would have survived had we retained Holdsworth and not lost Evans and Smillie to injury plus Detzi doing one. However, that would only have been a stay of execution.

You know it's interesting that Allison used to wear a tracky but then went Fedora and his achievements as a manager declined.

If you need to wear specific clothing to point out that you are the boss, then it's game over. IMO Warbs looks the part with his interviews from the training ground. Mark my prediction that the manger who wins the playoffs will wear a tracksuit [ Grayson or Slade ].

Ah but we are already there so the suits have it. You are quite right, you don't have to wear a suit to prove you are the boss, and in fact the best boss I ever had rarely wore one and told me to wear what I liked when I went to meet the bank manager. I still think though that unless you are actually doing anything that demands it a tracksuit looks a bit daft. TV presenters who insist on wearing them for no good reason look equally stupid. As for baseball caps with logos........

If Warbs can acquire the requisite firepower for next season, with the defence and midfield we already have, we'll prove a very tough proposition for anybody IMO.

The perfect combination. Can you imagine Holdsworth in this side?

Mark Warburton

I did love our football under Holder too, how could you not enjoy two lethal forwards with a team who could battle or play behind them?

I don't remember much of that to be honest - my recollection is mainly the ol' heave ho!

From my recall, if Bees weren't exactly Route 1, we were certainly much more direct than the team of the last two or three seasons.

And whilst this must be no criticism of the great man himself (38 goals!), it is hardly coincidental that Deano left Bees to join...

... Joe Kinnear's Wimbledon

I am so enjoying what Warburton should wear thread. At last we are posting about important issues. I feel he needs to add a understated pocket square and black brogues, preferably Armani to his touch line look. It goes without saying that the players should on match dates wear black suits, with pocket square and black brogues. We should not only be known as a side that plays beautiful football but have easily the best dressed manager and team in the league.

Paul Tisdale is probably worthy of that accolade although Uwe was a snappy dresser.

Not quite. Last time we got to the championship holder wore a tracky

Yep, and that's where Bliss and Gayle ended up too!

no ,technically inept and a goal hanger

A bit harsh I think. Give me a goal hanger who scores 25+ goals a season any day!

Mark Warburton

..............................I don't think he still has the pace required anymore.............................

You're a funny man WisBee! ;)

Mark Warburton

Warbs is King and shouldn't eat with the troops.

Uwe would sometimes swing both ways… 1st half in a tracky, the second half in a suit. Suited and booted doesn't do any harm. When you're in a tracky it looks like you fancy yourself as an emergency sub rather than completely trusting in your team to execute your well thought out and consistently practiced strategic game plan (ahem)

Mark Warburton

no ,technically inept and a goal hanger

Did you forget the :fishing: ?
If you don't think Deano would add to this team then I'll ask the men in white coats to limber up for next Saturday's celebration :)

Mark Warburton

The only reason for a good manager wearing a track suit is because he doesn't wasn't to ruin his expensive suit as the team celebrate success by fizzing up champagne after promotion!!!
Warbs is the manager, not one of the lads, and his kit for a match is smart suit and tie.

However, perhaps there should be some form of hierarchy for what managers wear.

You start off in a track suit, but when you have achieved something, promotion or any cup final win etc..., you then wear a suit.

If after 5 seasons as a manager, you haven't won anything, then you revert to sack cloth and ashes.

Would then make it very velar to all fans where their manager stood in the pecking order!

Unless you are David Moyes ;)

Mark Warburton

I like to see managers dressed smartly. It demonstrates a professional attitude if nothing else.

Furthermore, there ought to be a little distance between the manager and the players. The manager has to make decisions about who's playing and who's not as well as about players' long term prospects and development. Over-familiarity can be fatal. Of course the manager can put the proverbial arm round a player to encourage, console or re-assure someone who is down - but the boss has to be the boss and he has to be seen to be so.

I agree with the second half of your post...

...but I don't care whether Mark Warburton turns up to every game dressed up as the pope, as long as he brings us continued success! :warbs:

Mark Warburton

Managers that wear tracksuits are those that find it hard to realise the fact that they do not play any more and it gently lets them down that they can wear the boots that makes them still

feel that part of them is still a player Warbs does not have that problem .

Mark Warburton

:warbs: Under pressure now after the last two performances. Stevenage is a must win game. His last chance surely? :D

Listen to his post match interview. Absolutely bloody furious!!! Incensed that fans had paid good money for today and been totally let down!! He asked the players "what am I going to say"?? He is deeply impressive.

Mark Warburton

Just watched the interview on bees player..didn't think he could be that angry.. I was wrong.. Still not up to John Sitton standards though

Mark Warburton

spoke like we all felt - I get the impression he trusts the players and today that trust was dented - it is ok being angry tonight but would hope that we can turn that into positives for next week as it would leave a sour taste if we put in a poor show. I guess even with his anger he more than anyone also needs to keep the perspective of what has gone well this season.

good! waste of £50+ today..

Mark Warburton

Fair play to the man. Pulled no punches gave credit where it was due & acknowledged how badly the fans had been let down.
I get the impression that there will be a few players having their palms read over the next few days resulting in a positive reaction next saturday .

The two points are related. The manager needs to signal very clearly that he has high standards, that he isn't one of the boys and that he is the one in charge. A suit says loud and clear that we're here to do business. Casual wear says it's a training session. No compromise!

Mark Warburton

Correct analysis by Warbo. However, what worries me most is that we always have a Plan A but no B or C.

We most certainly will need that in the Championship.

Today's THRASHING could be a blessing in disguise.

Mark Warburton

He knows that it wasn't professional today, and made a point of mentioning that most of the starting line up didn't turn up with the exception of Douglas, Dallas and Judge, whom he considered put in a shift.

Also he knows that there will be no games in the Championship where we can not turn up, plus he was keen to emphasise that Brentford must play every game at full whack until the end, so as not to do a disservice to other teams in the league.

As I have said before, he is not one of the lads, and it is good to see that he is also made of steel, which will do the team the world of good in preparing for next season.

I expect that Stevenage are going to be on the receiving end of the backlash from today. So can expect 6 goals next week --- in the right end for us!

Also revealing today that he didn't even consider putting Grigg on, and he wasn't on at the start. Is that it?

Anyone would think he had just lost the FA Cup final.

Mark Warburton

Through the season when CD and MT have both looked in need of a rest at times MW clearly didn't have any faith in Grigg to replace them/ change a match ( Swindon being a good recent example as well).

In fact will we see the headline
"Grigg moves to Greggs"
or is that too harsh?

Mark Warburton

Sorry the expectations from the manager are right that performance was way below our standards and next year every match is important when we need to play to our potential TODAY WAS WOEFULL END OF!!!!

..............doesn't the next appearance by Grigg trigger another payment to Walsall?.......................I think that signals that the end has come for Grigg at BFC..........................

I don't think any player doubted that the likes of Alf Ramsay or Brian Clough were the boss, had high standards and weren't one of the boys. I doubt anyone would cross Tony Pulis either. If you need to wear a suit to make these points then maybe your personality isn't as strong as those who don't wear suits. Fact is that the wearing of suits has crept in over the last twenty years and IMO it's a reflection of the celebrity status and money which has become associated with the game. It started at the top moneybags level and trickled down the leagues. It's a case of saying , ' Look at me I'm the manager ' when actually we should focus entirely on how the team is playing. If all the managers wore tracksuits someone would get relegated and the same applies to suits. Football is an athletic sport and plain fact is IMO they look daft standing in the mud in a suit and always will.
I would also like to see the old T ball reintroduced with a lace and the tackle from behind made legal again .

When Mourinho wanted results in Madrid and at Anfield- on went the tracksuit:D

And probably time to , he just has,nt performed enough and more importantly does,nt look a goal threat.

I am interested in not what so much what Warburton said after the Colchester game but why he said it. He has also struck me as being a thoughtful and reflective person, who with a very successful career behind him in a high pressure environment , has much more experience in people management than the run of the mill manager. So why go out of his way to depart from the normal, never criticise the players in public? We all know they, with a few exceptions, let themselves down. They were, and I hate to say this, unprofessional. They know this, and they know we know this.

Being dressed down by Warburtin in public is not adding anything to the situation. I still feel he is a cut above other managers mainly because of his background. I would have thought he would have found a bland formulae for the post match interviews.

This week he needs to concentrate on helping the players learn from their performances.

If it had been me I would have been pretty mad and probably made just the same points as he did. But he is the manager, with years of top notch experience. I am not.

Oh well next August we will see. Another season, new players and new challenges. I do hope we will not in November have a Warburton out campaign as we did with Rosler. We need stability not change when we experience bad weather. This squall should not deflect us or start to undermine team cohesion.

I think he said it because he was thoroughly pissed off. He didnt have to pay to endure it though unlike the poor 2,000 plus fans had to.He was embarrassed for them and the club.

Mark Warburton

Ade it wasn't a specific " dressing down" of individual players more a genetic statement that, with a few exceptions, the players did not perform and that, as a club, it was found unacceptable

I thought it was an honest response and does no harm to remind the players that as a club we expect more. It was different to the Scott comments we used to hear about following orders etc. don't think it does any harm and don't expect the players are perturbed about it, they know they didn't turn up

The players, rightly, have been lauded this season by supporters and manager alike but a little reminder to them that such performances are below BFC expectations is no bad thing
