It's 20 years since I last worked in the UK but I would assume that if HMRC are using IR35 legislation to assess or audit GL/intermediate entities they are wasting taxpayer money.

Banana, I’d like you to clarify this. You invite us to report anyone else who is being ‘political’ - small ’p’, and not party political. That’s a broad term. The first definition of political that pops up is ‘relating to the government or public affairs of a country’. Do you mean offensive? Do you mean using language of hate?

It will actually be quite refreshing to just watch the football this evening.

It'll be interesting to hear some different commentators too. I won't miss Lineker, nor most of the clowns that pass for 'analysts'. Yes, it can be quite gratifying when they say something positive about our team. Not bothered about the likes of Murphy, Wright, Richards and Jenas - never been interested in anything they have to say. Have a bit of time for Shearer as he picks out some interesting things at times, but he's not the most engaging speaker.

As for Lineker - I doubt he'll be back. On massive money for doing one programme a week. Not sure what the love in is - he's no Des Lynam - he'll end up somewhere else and free to share whatever views he wants.

Des was a one off and special, Chappers is excellent, I also think Lineker is better than maybe he is given credit for.
The problem are the motley crew of pundits he has to engage with and try and get something remotely insightful or interesting out of that is a tough ask with most. I like Ian Wright in small doses as honest with a bit of passion but most of the rest need to hang up their mics

I record it and watch it Sunday morning, and so I whizz through the boring bits (I.e. the pundits) and just go to our matches and play them in full, and so I don't have any opinion on GL, but my wife (who knows nothing about football) thinks it's stupid.

Huge storm in a tea cup. Alan Sugar has tweeted far more ‘outrageous’ political stuff in the last few years and no one at the beeb bats an eyelid.

I’m not a fan of Lineker’s presenting (highlighted more so recently when he did an Ivan Toney betting ‘joke’ - how we laughed ?) but I admire him for sticking to his principals, and I think he’s probably right in what he said.

However, I’m now at an age where unless things directly affect me, or the people that I love then I tend to let them pass me by. So many people (mainly middle aged men) seem to get triggered by things that, in the grand scheme of things are really not that important. Family and friends are important, Brentford and music is important. Gary Lineker, Sam Smith, Harry and Meghan aren’t….

I'd argue this one is important.

Clearly the 'outrage' around all of this has been planned rather than being wholly 'natural'.

The commentary is likely to be from the world feed. For those of us with access to the internet there’ll be no point in watching MotD. Even if you don’t like or agree much with any of the pundits, the thing MotD does well and won’t do at all tonight is stitch together the day’s games and put them in the context of each other along with the context of the individual teams’ performances and challenges. Most of us don’t know that much about other teams and MotD presents that background info for a non-specialist audience who haven’t been to the games.

Away from the telly, my experience has been that the most interesting and perceptive comments (even/particularly if wrong/I disagree) on places like the GPG or real life often come from people who also have an interest in and opinions on other things. We rightly keep overt political debate off here but the off topic Chit Chat I think gives a good idea of the variety of life experiences we have. Anyone who is “just football, not really interested in anything else” is usually incredibly dull even about the football, in my opinion. Very few on here fit that and it’s why this place and us as fans are much better than most of the opponents’ boards filled with the infuriatingly one-eyes. We’ll lose something if MotD becomes “just the football presented neutrally by people with no hinterland in anything else”.

Can’t see a way out. As you say the Beeb have backed themselves into a corner and after the huge support GL has received I can’t see how he can kowtow. Depending on the contractual arrangements between him and BBC I can see a messy court case down the line with presumably the licence payers footing the bill. If there’s a dead cat around it should be this out of date, out of touch albatross

I think the BBC have probably tarnished the MotD brand beyond repair. Unless they U-turn, eat humble pie and let Lineker back on I can't see anyone else wanting the job. The other channels will be queuing up to hire Gary and the usual pundits, and without their flagship highlights program I doubt the Premier League will renew the BBC's contract. They may even have a get out clause already.

Only a matter of time before Lineker is presenting a Saturday night highlights show on Sky, BT/TNT Sports or I reckon most likely Amazon Freeview. Be a massive coup for them as they try and expand their football offer.

Unfortunately, the only winners will be those who want to defund the BBC and have all content run by private broadcasters. Not long before we get to no free to air sports in this country.

I suspect common sense will prevail - he made an incorrect tweet according to his BBC contract, which I doubt will qualify as gross misconduct. My guess is he'll be given a reprimand on his future behaviour online and things will go back to normal.

I like Lineker. Especially the MOTD top tens where he has some great stories (some cracking ones on Gazza) and knowledge of all things football. He has spoken up for people who don't have a voice. Whether you agree with his political leanings or not, other BBC employees have tweeted worse/more biased things and haven't been reprimanded ie Suge Knight. What a shame.
Wrighty might not be everyone's cup of tea but his enthusiasm is boundless and I like him.
Good to see that solidarity amongst the pundits.

And the news has received extensive New Zealand radio and TV news coverage today. Match of the Day isn't even shown over here as far as I know on any TV channels. One would probably need a VPN to watch from here.

On a different note I would assume that GL is not being supplied work this weekend and this would avoid the IR35 test that his 'declared empoyer' does not gurantee work. Not the only employment test I would suggest he fails.

On the other side of the fence Lineker did sign a contract when he went to work for the BBC, he would have known all about the Ts & Cs. Also its also very easy to say he should keep to his morals, very easy when you have his money and won't be out of a job too long if he leaves the BBC. Not saying I don't agree with him but, there is always another side to these things.

How do you know what’s in his contract. And he does not work for the BBC.
