I have no dog in this fight other than wanting to see Rico back asap, but I did think Thomas’s reply at the recent forum was politician waffle at its worst:
“Soon, hopefully. I think Rico will be back sooner than Hickey. I’ve said in a press conference recently, instead of getting your hopes up too high I will just say, ‘This week, they are involved in the squad'. Of course, we will say when they play a friendly or a B team game, but I think it’s better to do it like that than saying, ‘They’ll be back in 10 days or two weeks’.”

Personally I’d been hoping for something along the lines of: “We thought he was close. He had a minor/major/not sure setback [delete as appropriate]. Realistically it’s looking like 2/3/4 months more [erring on the conservative side given history], but obviously we’re not going to rush him as he’s priceless.”

Honest, straightforward, breaking no major confidences that I can see. It would have been disappointing and probably caused more grumbles from some on the night, but it would have lanced the boil of this daily “When and where’s Rico?” posting. The only reason for not doing so that I can see is that they don’t have a scooby, which seems a bit far-fetched.

Without any clear communication from the club everything we read on here about Rico is speculation. However nature doesnt like a vacuum and it's quite human to want to explain an unknown. We are all worried about Rico's health and would love to see him return but manage our frustration in different ways. Turning on each other is one of these.

Same as last season:
Get what others have said about no team ever having access to a "full" squad, but the fact that we're seeing tantalising glimpses of "what (this season) might have been", makes it all the more frustrating.....?

I share the frustration, as it was anticipated by many that Rico was not going to be banging in 90 mins performances well before the relapse. Players don't just pick up where they left off after that length of time out. Going through half a season without a proper LB should have been avoided. KLP has done better than expected, but he's not the answer.

This sort of injury used to be career ending and, inshallah, Rico’s already come through one and been a better player after.
That in itself is pretty miraculous, and a testament to the expertise of the staff and Rico’s belief and powers of recovery, I just hope it the same this time.
However long it takes.
I don’t think they’ll know how good a ‘fix’ it’s been until he’s out playing on grass regularly and ‘stressing’ the area. It’ll then be analysed for damage and recovery etc and this will be the process time and again until everyone (especially Rico) is happy and confident to come back.
My hope is that he comes back in some way; if not for us then someone lower down.
It’ll be such a shame not to witness this kind of thing again ….. (at 01:04).

Do you really believe that?

I’m expecting, on my next GP visit, to be told I’m going to live to 100… and I’m going to post some very angry messages on the internet if I don’t.

But all the Club will be able to say is just better informed speculation until he’s proved his fitness.

What amazes me is the demand from fans for constant updates on players injuries. Each player will have an individual rehab programme based on his injury. That programme will have multiple milestones with target completion timescales based on his previous fitness, strength and flexibility data, the medical teams specialist experience and general medical data available on the specific injury. Those milestones and target completion dates will be constantly adjusted based on the players progress and may include setbacks. All this will be before the player even gets near training on the grass.
TF is laser focused on the next game and probably only has a passing interest in the multiple milestones pre training on the grass. He will have far more interest when a player is available for contact training with other players and availability to play 45 minutes in a BCD match, hence his vague answers in press conferences when a player has not yet been available for full contact training with the rest of the team.

I’m sure it’s only a passing interest with a weekly update from the medical team. It’s only the players available to him for the next game that he’s focused on.

Yep, that’s the job he’s paid to do. At least we’ve moved on from the days of Shankly, when you didn’t exist if you weren’t fit. Many players made themselves
available and did longer term damage instead.

Probably interspersed with doom and gloom about Ajer, Igor, Hickey, Pinnock, Jensen, Sepp, Nunes etc. And also, without doubt, disbelieving that anyone will ever return, including Rico. Then there will be the "we're only 2 more injuries away from....". I suspect no-one should listen unless they want to spend Christmas in a spiral of depression.

I actually thought what TF and PG said was very good.

I don't necessarily believe as our manager he was unaware of how forensically fans scrutinise his injury updates. The difference between 'a few' and 'some' weeks, but I think it's fair to say we've suffered unprecedented injuries, to an extent even TF has had to learn how to react to.

I posted on here towards the end of last season about how individual fans form different coping means to accept certain players will be out for so long. Last summer I said "I don't expect to see Rico or Aaron this season".

Not because I don't think we will, but how many months are you going to spend thinking 'this time next month, that'll be it' or how many post match-day reactions will continue to include mountains of " that's what happens when you don't have your full-backs". Yes, but at what point does that simply become a mere copy and paste rather than constructive reflection?

All true by the way, all true. Rico and Aaron are paramount to our structure and make up that many times better. But I so enjoy seeing Bees in the Premier League, it would be far too easy to let these crises overshadow that.

So as far as I'm concerned, the team we have now is the team we have. And yes the away form isn't good, but we've started very well at home.

This thread is crazy on so many levels!

It will be a great day when Rico runs out at New Griffin Park in the Premier league again. I really hope it happens and believe it will.

People must look after Rico and do what is right for him. If that means he never plays again, so be it. Up to this point he has been a fantastic servant of the club.
