Should Scott Go?

Harsh. He took over a squad of what David Webb used to describe as 'sparesies' - that's 'Conference', to you and me, at a club that was being strung up by it's bollox (if a club can have bollox ), installed a bit of spirit and came close to keeping us up which, would have been an absolute miracle considering what he inherited. I liked him . :sueme:

thats exactly it

Should Scott Go?

I think that's a fair verdict. He inherited a very poor squad at Christmas and needed a slightly longer run at rescuing us. If the board had moved a bit earlier, I think he'd have made it.

what could the board do ? didnt have money did we ore we wouldnt of ended up up with the poor squad we had ?

Should Scott Go?

Adams reign was desperate and I felt sorry for him.

It was like asking me to convince my mates who are all vets to bail me out by digging out their boots for one last go at senior level to fufil fixtures as the current squad hasn't got 11 footballers on the books. Supplement the old has beens with a few never was mates and top up on a friday night in your local with blokes who overhear you asking the landlord if any of the punters have ever played and are available tomorrow.

It was like the script of one of those awful feelgood "When saturday comes" type football films, start with a 52 year old alcoholic cynic (Warren)and throw in a girl in disguise plus a special needs kid who turns out to be the new Wayne Rooney except that in Leon Townleys case it was just asking too much for him to read the game!

That truly was the worst side ever assembled with Mike Everitts a close second

worse than the last lot that went down with the worst record in our history ? atleast they put up a fight under Adams

Should Scott Go?

You may be right, they were battlers and in hindsight that may have given them the edge over the last relegation side but doubt that Charlie, Cockerill or Warren would last ninenty minutes with todays refs and rules.
I do believe the football played now in div 3 is of a better standard than back then though albeit not necessarily as much fun.

i think the standard of footie from top to bottom has dropped over the last 10 15 years in this country,in all divisions..

Should Scott Go?

Strongly disagree, players are fitter, stronger, healthier, technically better and the game is far quicker but maybe not always as entertaining IMHO

fitter yes, stronger no, i thought footie early 90s was quick(enough).entertainment was of a much higher standard in the 90s,i think the football and footballers being better as a whole. And the change in rules have contributed too

I'm with BNB on this I'm afraid. I reckon League One now is about what Conference level was twenty years ago. Fitter, stronger, healthier, yes. But with less ability because anyone with half as much talent as what the likes of Holdsworth, Smillie, Blissett, Evans, etc. is earning £400,000,000,000,000 a week playing for Tottenham's 4th team.

You've only got to look at our 91/92 team that just managed to scrape up on the last day of the season and compare it to the general expectation of this current shower. Pretty conclusive evidence if you ask me .

Should Scott Go?

I think football died when the defensive midfielder became a must.
Coaches became cautious and then Scott got a job and took it a step further by playing 3 with no right winger.

It's all about opinions I know and while I agree the football was more entertaining then as skilful individuals allowed to express themselves, I think that today's sides would be too strong and quick.

Overall, today's defenders in the Premiership have a much better technique than their predecessors twenty or thirty years back. I don't know if that filters down to the First Division. Generally speaking, you can't take out opposition strikers like you could in days of yore. So, they have to be able to play a bit more.
That's my reckoning, anyway.

nothing wrong with your opinion....though opinions are frowned upon on here regularly !!.

there were bagfulls of skillful individuals then and before that,id go as far to say there were more on a pitch then at an average league one game than there are now

Without a doubt, you'll not see many players who aren't either big, strong or very quick anymore unless they're a proven goalscorer.

Unlikely to see skilful types like Glenn Hoddle, Jan Molby or even Matt Le Tissuer again while the game is all about pace and strength in the top flight as they'd be deemed "too slow" and unable to track back.

I preferred watching football back then as less regimented with more mavericks playing without fear of losing.

I love this, yes they are and normally by you.;)

deary me,terrible and hurtful commentrofl

i dont mind opinions, and discussions on them such as now.and ive found myself when putting my own on here, shouted down.not me shouting down.the one exception being matey knocking the remembrance day/poppys

Equally, attacking players had to have good technique to get away from the physical challenges which were so prevalant in the 60's when I played my football. I remember George Best taking the pi** out of Ron Harris at Stamford Bridge and not many could do that ! We shouldn't underrate how skilful those guys were as they had to be able to protect themselves unlike today's players who are barely touched. I used to work with a bloke who played mostly at reserve level for West Brom in the early 60's. He was up against Phil Woosnam in one game [ for those old enough to remember him Woosnam was a bloody fine player for Villa as an inside forward]. My mate decided that as he was marking him his best tactic was to kick the crap out of him. Unfortunately he never got near Woosnam who seemed to be running at him with the ball all match. Eeeeeeeeee lad, those were the days.

just thought i'd have a quick look through this thread then realised there's 34 pages...

it just got me thinking... if they had t'internet 25 odd years ago, it would be funny to read on a man u site the 'should ferguson go?' thread... i'd like to think i'd have said, 'lets give him the cup replay and see how it goes from there'... if i was a **** enough to support them.

am i suggesting AS will still be here 25 years and a couple of champions leagues later? it would be nice... actually... it wouldn't would it... we'd still be moaning.

Should Scott Go?

So will you allow me to say that Scott's teams are really horrible to watch and that I am bored by them without saying I am wrong?

Cheers.:sorted:

i think my points are pretty much from up on the fence?
your allowed to say what you like, ive never said you cant, all ive done is put my opinion across in response to an open discussion, never shouted you down?.though i have to say it gets a bit boring how quick you are to repeat your points even when we do well:rolleyes:

Come on, stop the:rolleyes:! People who think Scott is God ask where are the doubters now when we get a draw and how quiet we go, well now I'm told off for staying around. It can't be done both ways, I fell off the fence ages ago and look forward to when clubs come knocking for him as per his lovely press conference the other day.

Should Scott Go?

I liked Micky Adams and thought he could have been ideal for us. In truth he had long enough to turn it around, Webb got rid of May/ Flasher after about 3 months, but for whatever reason he couldn't manage it. Whether it was the players he brought in or we were just too far gone by then who knows.

I will remember those days more for ushering in the eventual dark days of the Noades reign.

ive never once said he's God but respect what hes done for us so far,it cant be faulted.i just dont see the need for any doubt, and such strong criticism, yet.this season is far from over,id understand if we were rooted to the bottom and trailing but we arent, and i for one would rather see,and hope, us start badly and finish strongly at the right end of the table for once as oppose to that like we have done so often over the years. You have a obvious personal agenda against him and my point was youve always got something negative to say no matter how positive anything has been becuase its not needed and that says to me you want failure and try to find anything against him,on top of my point i dont see the need for any of it yet at all.as tested as i was getting, around the aldershot defeat,im still on the fence as the season is so far from finished and our current position is ok

i though Adams should of been given the chance as he was unlucky not to keep us up with the poor team we had,and for his track record for getting out of the basement division.

i hate Noades for him taking over our club quoting himself that he was taking over a debt free club, then using us as a play thing, abusing the club and leaving us with the monstrous debt thats shocking for a club at our level and had gone nowhere to amount that debt.all the while when rightly questioned by concerned fanzines etc about money spending/costs and that,he assured all that it was his own money and the club had nothing to worry about ! i had massive doubts under noades.we were shafted big time.

it's a myth, he had more games then Eddie May. Adams record was shocking:wave:

BNB,

Sorry, but just a point of history from one of your previous points - money was available that season & that was part of the problem. We sold Asaba at the start of the season, after a number of others previously, for approx £700k. W£bb promised us that ALL the Asaba money would be invested in new players but very little was never released. May had no chance & Adams little more imo.

Some money was spent but there was at least one story going round at the time that Swaisland even had to sign a cheque behind W£bb's back as W£bb would never have allowed it. That was how W£bb was able to sell a 'debt-free' club.

So there was money around.

Interestingly, we ended that season with 50 points I believe. We didn't deserve to stay up, as NLB says, but we weren't far adrift.

Yeah, agree with you, that's why I restricted my comments to defenders. As they can't get away with nearly as much today, especially as all games are on camera, and referees protect attacking players more, they have to be able to play more.

if the man in charge, webb, didnt make the money available
,then it is exactly that unavailable meaning we had no money to spend,or very little.the players we brought in pre season were all crap freebies like wormull and spencer and even if the dosh was available from Asaba's sale that was a relativley small amount then to spend, more so on the bad squad we had. That is alot of money for most clubs now

Not at all. It's simply a way of enabling people to see more clearly what a number of posters on here refuse to see, namely that after a stumbling start to the season, Brentford's performances - or shall we just say results - have steadily and consistently improved. It's a way of showing that there has been a shape to the season so far, that's it's not just a series of random events over which the manager has been unable to exercise any control. It is, moreover, an improvement that I predicted quite unambiguously a good two months ago.

Can i borrow your crystal ball, there was no indication a month ago or even two weeks ago that AS could possibly turn this around, If you had bothered to watch a few games you would have seen for yourself what the GPG's were watching.
Allthough i obviously like the upturn in results and performances it is still early days, and I among others are still not convinced.

Nonsense, we have been on a good run for months. There were a few on here who pointed out that the squad would take time to gel and that it was too talented to struggle for long.

2 weeks ago was the 17th November when we had won 4 of the previous 7 league games and AS was current manager of the month.

So no he shouldn't go anywhere.

I see AS spend more money on agents than Blackpool did getting in to the premiership

i dont see this proving any points without more evidence of comparison with other clubs as there are so many that have spent more on agents than blackpool ? what blackpool have achieved and how theyve achieved, and still achieving,it is amazing

Just wanted to post some positive Andy Scott news. Well done Andy supporting CRY (Cardiac Risk for the Young). Several professional footballers have died suddenly on the pitch or in training and our Andy had a close shave whilst I believe playing for Oxford Utd. before being diagnosed with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM) probably the most common cause of sudden death in young athletes. In Italy they screen all young competitors for this dominantly heredited condition, affecting the myocardium (heart muscle). In UK we don't but CRY support the need to do so, hence the screening event supported by Andy. The diagnosis of HOCM may be suspected from an abnormality on the ECG (electrocardiogram) and /or from detection of a heart murmer on auscultation (listening to the chest with a stethoscope). Those with a murmer and/or ECG abnormality will proceed to cardiac ultrasound (Echcardiography) which is the gold standard diagnostic test. Well done Andy for supporting this most worthy charity. The sudden and preventable death of a child or young adult or spotsman is both devastating and unforgivable.

if you go back 10-15 years I remember if a player brought down a high ball with one touch and killed it dead they got a round of applause. We used to lord about foreigners doing it and used to say english players had a poor first touch so less time on the ball.

Nowadays you expect most non league players to kill a 50 yard hoof stone dead with one touch, in fact most of my old sunday team can still do it.
