I've got a reasonable sized old chap, I'm have great height, all my own hair and teeth , a brilliant sense of humour, a decent looking doris, 2 nice kids and cake making skills that rival most rival football fans.
I think I have it better than most.

I thought he had a very good game today. A bit wasteful at times with his passing, and not sure if he works well with Pead, as they lack creativity as a pair. He broke up play a lot, worked hard, put in some key tackles and got about. Very good peformance.
Some people on hear seem to think he was crap, which I strongly disagree with. Am I the only one who thought he was good today? Or am I right in my thinking that the people who said he was crap at football don't really see the bigger picture of the game and don't actually know what they are talking about?

Totally agree with above post. I am amazed people dont rate him. He quietly goes about his business breaks up play and then plays simple ball. He is not in there to score plenty of goals and play defense splitting passes!!! He is a very good holding midfielder who does a solid job in my opinion.

Spot on - you only notice the value of somebody like Marcus Bean when you havn't got one in your side. Like us last season for example.

Definitely his best game for us yesterday. Done a superb job mopping up, stopping their attacks and starting ours. If he keeps it up, we have a potentialy very good centre-mid partnership when Smith returns. Saying that, Pead didn't do too badly either.

Agree with last few posts. Bean is just what the doctor ordered. Today he protected the back four very well, nicked the ball off the toe of their central midfield pairing umpteen times and generally broke up their play very well. He plays simple balls to our better footballers like Poole. Well done Marcus, good job, keep it up.

Rather like Talbot you only notice his absence. He still needs to react quicker in possession (although the players in front of him need to have more movement, as it seems like he does not want to waste a pass) but I'm sure that he will eventually adjust to being closed down by express train charges a la Mousinho. He did some impressive covering of the defence; one particular clearance after a player had broken through into the box yesterday. I think he will come good; the current midfield 'problem' is that O'Connor is too similar, Pead has put in some sterling performances but he is also reluctant to get forward, leaving us all waiting to see how he will gel with Smith.

Six unbeaten with four clean sheets - I'd say Bean is exactly the player we've been missing for the last two years. Don't underestimate his role quietly breaking up attacks and filling gaps in our midfield and defence.
This reminds me a little of Arsenal fans who constantly criticised Gilberto Silva for never doing anything/always passing sideways. They missed him when he was out for 6 months - and haven't won anything since he was a regular in the side. Every team needs a player like this - he allows others to play.

Glad to see that people agree with me.
I can't believe some of the stick he was getting. He's a very good solid player for us imo and he and Gary Smith will be a great pairing.
Maybe play O'Connor on the right ala Yeovil and we'll have a very strong midfield imo.

I agree but he has to sharpen up his stuff when he has the ball with a bit of time and space, he spends too much time deciding what to do with it and often loses it IMO. He will come good and his not so good isn't that bad.

A bit rusty. That's a good way of describing him. He shows signs that he will deliver but for me he's been a bit dissapointing so far this season.
I'm waiting though until he's played a few games in the league alongside Smith. They looked like they could have a real good understanding during pre season

He's exactly the kind of player we've been crying out for IMO, proper old fasioned, no nonsense Central Midfielder. He was dynamite Saturday, but i thought him and Peado were both mint :bound:

That's what I was getting at. He seems a bit slow currently and the tackling part as improved as Pead has been he's not a tackler really, leaving Bean to do the job of 2 men at times.

I thought it was a good performance from Bean he just needs to work a bit on his distribution. He looks a good player to me and will ony improve as the season goes on.

He's our best holding midfield player, he breaks up the opposition attacks, passes the ball well and covers an enormous amount of ground.........he hit a cracking shot today and only a good save stopped it from being a potential goal of the season.............is that enough for you ?.....honestly some people !

Gives the ball away too cheaply at times but we'd miss his break up play. Ever noticed that when they attack, he's nearly always where the ball is? Fit lad.

I think people are thinking of a better version of O'Connor which he isn't. Kevin sits infront of the back 4 and thats all he does. Marcus is all over the pitch taking the fight to the opposition and getting forward as well which sometimes leaves us exposed at the back. If you think back to the home game against Macclesfield last year where it took us until the last minute to break them down you'll see the difference. There were times last season when I wanted O'Connor to make something happen rather than just stopping the opposition.
There are lots of things Marcus needs to do better but I'm convinced he's an important part of why we're a better team this year.

He's excellent and tackling and making interceptions. He also makes some good runs and finds space well.
Unforuantley some times he doesn't think before he passes and things go very wrong. Yesterday was the first time i've seen him have a sh*t game.

The only thing i'd criticise about yesterdays performance was his decision making when in possession eg, the back heel to no-one in front of his own penalty area. I'm glad in a way that he displays the confidence to do such things - he just needs to tighten up where he does it on the pitch.
As said last week (i think) he's an important part of the solid spine of this team.

agree with this post.
He does lack the final pass for a midfielder pushing forward, but he breaks up play so well, he's probably getting to grips with the way AS plays, like most of the team, we seem to forget that this team was only put together in August!
After 9 matches we're where I wanted us to be, the next 10 matches we need to stay in the top 3 or 5, the team will be better and Bean, i think, will be the main man in the team.

Anyone who has played football themselves at a decent level or not can recognise Bean as effective player even if it is not immediately obvious. That's not to say that you cannot be knowledgeable if you have never played. However, I played alongside a very similar player in my Sunday league days. All this guy did was chase and break things up and give it to a more creative player we had. The value it added to the team was massive because you felt that if you got caught out of position, Brian (as his name was) would be there to mop things up. Nobody wanted him to try anything else and I think when we get Gary Smith back, I think Bean's game will come into it's own.
Paul Smith played this role very well, but IMHO was a far better player than Bean but he was a spoiler as well. I seem to remember people around me at that time slating Paul Smith without realising what he was doing. Someone speculated that our Goals against column arguably is a result of Bean's breaking down attacks before they start..I would agree and ask our back line what they think and I'd bet they love having Bean in front of them. Personally, I don't think Wright alongside is the answer at the moment but he could pop up in the Premier League in a few years or so and if so good luck to the lad.
Oh for Jay Tabb - anyone see his two goals for Coventry

Good post, Ghost - defensive midfielders are the most under-appreciated players in football, and we're seeing that at the moment with Bean. I disagree with what you said about Wright, though, as I think Bean and Wright complement each other perfectly. It's good to have a player (Wright) who will take a touch, have a look around and play the right pass rather than panicking.
Also, I'd like to see Bean drive forward and shoot more often, as judging by his effort on Saturday, he knows how to hit a long shot.

to be fair to Wright I've only seen him once (saturday) so my comment was probably premature. just a bit confused that loads of people had him down as MOM as I didn't see that even though he had a good second half. I will watch him with interest on the box v Notts County, as the wide pitch they have (from memory) could suit him and the TV angles will help to see his ability. He's also v.young so I should cut him some slack.
