I want Brown to succeed, but based on what information is available, I'm not comfortable we've let Nelson and Abbey go to have him step into their shoes.... that's all.

So Abbbey had a better write up from fans that had witnessed his performances before joining us?
Imho he was an accident waiting to happen. :fishing:

Nelson never dropped a clanger then ? Or Abbey ?

You've seen a YouTube clip of a error in a big game and you're crucifying the bloke - get over it !

The Simon Brown thread

The guys 30 so he will have plenty of experience. His presence will help organise the defence! He will be fine, a very good signing!

The Simon Brown thread

When we signed Abbey, it was met with almost 100% negative response from GPG'ers, me included. No other clubs supporters had a good word to say about him and yet he has within 18 games become a lower league Gordon Banks!

He's never spent very long anywhere and he was a short term solution and in fairness IMHO was a success. I for one would expect that the new Manager maybe didn't get to see him much last year so went on colleagues and acquaintances advice in not offering a new deal.

He has now got in someone that he knows and reckons can do a cost effective job for us .....and that will do for me for now. Let the bloke get here and lets get behind him and hopefully he'll justify TB's faith. Some people on here almost look forward to having a reason to whinge and I genuinely belive that some numpty's are looking forward to his first mistake so that they can have a pop FFS!

The Simon Brown thread

So we're saying that the guy is sh*te based on a posting on youtube and some Hibs fans.

I had concerns that Abbey wouldn't be any good when he signed for us but proved to be more than capable in the end.

Give the guy a chance we haven't even seen him in pre-season yet. :banghead:

Didn't a certain England let in a howler playing against Brazil a few years ago  it happens from time to time. Lets give this guy a chance eh :sorted:

The Simon Brown thread

This numpty let in countless direct free kicks in important games - Gazza FA cup semi-final, European Championship with Graham Taylor in charge, World cup against Germany at Wembley, World cup against Brazil, plus many others but I'm getting bored and this has nothing to do with Brown.......

If you look at the mistakes nelson has made, and put them on film it would be a feature length, same could be said about the saves he made.So give the guy a chance,im sure there is footage of him making some brilliant saves, which would make more people have confidence.IS THERE ?????

You are quite dull.

The Simon Brown thread

Going by the youtube clip, the last thing Simon Brown needed in that game against Rangers was the same free-kick from almost the same spot by the same player. It had an always going to go in look to it, even though in the end it was a catastrophe.

Any player coming in to a division four side is going to come with question marks. This one looks no worse than any others and he's played in SPL.

2.5k a week is lot to pay a keeper at this level though! :fishing:

That cannot be accurate. Please say it isn't so.

The Simon Brown thread

Ive just watched the clip for the first time.Is positional sense, timing and ability to catch a ball REALLy that important in a keeper?...................;)

According to the training "next england keeper" Masters positional sense timing and ability are not important whatsoever

David Seaman one of the greatest keepers, but made a couple of absolute howlers, david james great keeper , a lot of howlers, if a keeper makes a mistake it looks a lot worse, cos it alwyas results in a goal,

Give him a chance,

F**K ME give the guy a chance,He hasn't even trained with us yet.
Welcome to Brentford Simon and good luck.

Yes it certainly is.

Is that what the club is doing then?

He's taking up Hill's job and salary as well and doubling up as saftey officer. ;) :D

Blimey some people! Can you see what he has put at the end (:fishing: ) I think it's called taking the p!$$.

Going by a few on here Mr Brown is in for a hard time before the season even starts! Can we please give him a chance to play. As said on here already, not many would of signed Abbey after watching him last pre-season, he looked terrible.

the main question for me is

what is his middle name, and what is Seb Brown's middle name.

This will be all important, come August

naughty KB:nono:

On lessons learnt from last season number 4437,
If Shifty Brown gets injured badly we could have Clark Masters (19) in goal and Seb Brown (pubity) on the bench. (sounds familiar)
Perhaps we should learn from this lesson and sign another goalkeeper who can challenge Clark for the No2 slot. Perhaps even a goalkeeper coach who could still play if required as a No3 behind Simon and Clark giving youn Seb another couple of years to learn his trade with occasional loans to Ryman Premier sides.

Not Nathan Abbey because he is not a coach (yet) apperently!

Remember Brown at Colchester and thinking he was pretty decent.

A quality acquisition by Butcher.

I agree better than that other keeper who took the ball out the penalty area what was his name Bankoli???lol lol

,,,the famous George...........

The Simon Brown thread

erm......

I hope last night was just a blip and hes going to regain some confidence soon, he was flapping at everything and didn't seem to know how to position himself.

The Simon Brown thread

He was much better at Hampton

Good to hear. Didn't want to be too harsh as there were a number of times where Reading just completly ran themselves right through our defence. Defence certainly looks like the main problem from last night, otherwise thought there were some positives to be taken from Thorpe, Connell, Cochrane, Smith (please find the money for both) and even Ryan Peters looked a bit better.

The Simon Brown thread

But not by much. He's not loud enough. With a defence like that both him and Mackie need to start taking some responsibility to talk more. Brown is also very slow to come out for balls that he should claim or clear. Bit worried tbh.

The Simon Brown thread

I think everyones still pretty new to each other and without a settled defence its difficult for a goalkeeper. He made some good stops but hestitated on numerous occasions on either crosses or balls through the back four. He should be ok though once he knows who hes playing with.

The Simon Brown thread

Forgot to mention the awful non-puch that he could have either caught or punched but instead flapped at which landed about 5 yards away. Be decisive, man!

Is this not what friendlies are all about? Goalkeeping is all about concentration, sharpness, positioning.

All stuff that is practice, practice, practice, and a lot of it match practice.

Don't get me wrong, if he's like this by the time the season starts, then lets be critical, but give him a chance to settle in.

Not just picking up on your post VTG; there is so much chipping away on here on what is an almost completely new group of players. Give them a chance to bed in.

FFs he's been a pro keeper for 13 years, I would hope he would not need to learn how to take a cross after a few weeks close season break.

Totaly agree, pre season friendlies are about gaining match fitness and sharpness, its the time that you expect mistakes and cock ups ( which is why I don't do friendlies as a rule), I remember first seeing Sodje in a friendly against Reading and I thought he looked a complete liability, within a few weeks he was a star

Also TB is bringing a completly new squad together with a higher number of trialists than normal so what do people expect??

Compare that with Reading who have a very settled sqaud and have already done a pre season tour.

The Simon Brown thread

He really doesnt like the ball to feet tho does he?! Seems to not know what to do with it and nearly got caught out by a Reading player on Weds for taking too many touches.

Having said that its nice to see a keeper who can keep the ball in the ground from goal kicks...

True but then the team's movement to make themselves available for anything from a throw to a goal kick was fairly poor. Hopefully they'll wake up in the next couple of weeks, TB's telling them what to do but they just aren't listening so I hope it's only a matter of time before the players understand how the others play. Like you said though, it is nice that he kicks within the boundary most of the time lol
Having said that though...

:imwith: I agree that in preseason you can expect a settling in period and some mistakes, but I'm of the opinion that it's slightly different for a keeper. You don't forget how to punch a ball out or when a good time is to get out early to clear a loose ball away from an oncoming attacker and you get more chance to stand and watch a play develop so you've got more chance to position yourself and be ready. He also doesn't need to develop as much of an understanding with the players as an outfielder does, although he does need to start commanding that defence pronto. Half of the time they expect him to come and get it and he doesn't, then when he does more often than not he doesn't shout. He really did flap at the first half cross I mentioned. Good recovery in the second half to tip over the bar though and he was unlucky with the goal scored from his stop in the first.

I'm fairly confident about our chances next season even with SB in goal, but I would like to see Masters play 90 minutes before the season starts and I'm expecting some of the stronger L2 teams to definitely do a number on us.

I think a keeper is very affected by the form and working relationship/ understanding of the players in front of him, particularly the central defenders.

This can click straight away or take time.

Too early to judge in my opnion

WBB takes most of the season to get back to form nowadays. :fishing:

Its not just about taking a cross. If you're rusty, and have made other errors, then it plays on your mind, concentration goes, then simple things like taking a cross go wrong.

Old cliche, but miscontrolling a ball for an outfield player is overlooked, but dropping a cross for a keeper is amplified.

Yes, I know, that's why I said he needs to start commanding his defence if they're not doing what he needs them to do. He needs to be more vocal.

Remember Benstead in that Chelsea friendly? Spat on by some Brentford sausage-jockeys* after letting in six. He turned out to be a decent 'keeper.

*Sausage-jockeys that still attend Brentford matches, I believe. Fatty, fatty, fat fats.
