Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Who do Leicester City think they are?! The guy does the impossible and wins them the Premiership title and he gets no leeway at all 9 months later! Shocking treatment!

So because he won them the league he should be allowed to continue and get them relegated? Staying in the premier league is paramount to them, and with the sort of money Vardy etc are on now, relegation could be fatal for them. They've not exactly been getting good results domestically all season have they?

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Not really.
It's simply an expression of the cost of relegation from the Premiership, of the financial gulf between the Premier League and the Football League. The risk to the club's wellbeing from getting relegated is immense.

You might be right, although I'd say an equal risk that has been considered is that of the owners' reputation.

Sadly the once 'people's game' is approaching the final stages of a long and painful death. Yes, of course football will survive but in what format? In 30 years time everyone involved in the money-game will be more than happy to be playing games in front of cardboard cut-outs so no worries about over-pricing, inconveniencing or having to deal with those nuisances who were once called supporters. Fortunately, I won't be around by then - and regretfully I can already see the end of me as a Brentford supporter anyway.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Of course though they're making a huge assumption that someone else can get a performance out of the ordinary and extremely comfortable players that make up their squad.

I'm pretty sure they've assessed that there is no point sticking with Ranieri as, lovely bloke that he is, he can no longer get this squad to perform and relegation is a near certainty. So, they're going to twist and maybe it doesn't work, but maybe it does.
Also, I heard that Ranieri's tactics haven't been working.
Has Woy retired?

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Tricky one trying to guess who would come in now. Now Leicester are probably back at their level , bookies favourite Mancini Probably wouldn't fancy it. From the rest of the list I thought Martin o Neill maybe would fit but probably wouldn't leave the Ireland job. I think pardew

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

I think he should have at least been afforded the opportunity to try and keep them up,don't you think he has earned that?

I'm not even sure I ever want Brentford to get to the Prem these days. It is a poisonous, corrupt, millionaires circus.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Surely Ranieri was still telling them to do the same stuff as last season?
Players are the ones at fault as far as I can see.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Winning the premier league is less important to these owners than being in it. Finishing 12th year after year after boring year is what they're after.

Amazingly it has happened 4 times in last 7 years I think

Sacked in under 12 months from Title win

Ranieri
Mourinho
Mancini
Ancelotti

Of course they are. The only thing you could level at Ranieri us putting too much faith in Morgan and Huth who really are not great players. Maybe he paid the price for too much loyalty?

Sometimes in team sports, people get found out, so what works one season doesn't necessarily work the following season.
It's very common in baseball that new hitters and pitchers get figured out as to their weaknesses in their sophomore season.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

It's a complete baffle as to why they've ended up going from title winners (comfortable) to relegation fodder. I knew they wouldn't be near the top this season but I didn't expect them to be this bad. I think his biggest mistakes was not bringing in a younger , pacier center back. Morgan and huth make bjelland look like usain bolt.

Oh FFS! Are you one of Brentford's new breed of supporter that expects success every season...you know the type that have never experienced a Brentford relegation?! I'm quite sure one of the manager's objectives last season was to not win the Premiership. If you can't see that he's been treated appallingly, perhaps you should ask your friend to lend you the Buzzette costume on non match days? (Your look would match your crass comments)

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

every smaller club that wins something struggles in the league every year when in an extra Cup competition, Everton and Swansea to name a few.. what a joke..

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Talksport radio are calling up a whole host of former players and managers to speak with about the Leicester decision - whilst Harry Redknapp is desperately trying to get through on the phone to announce that he's not in the least interested in the job, unless they want to talk to him, of course!

No I was at Bristol City when Rosenior scored the goals to send us down in 1993. I have also witnessed all bar 23 league matches home and away since 2005. How about you? Who said he had an objective to win the Premier League last season? However im sure he did have an objective for this season to be far better off than 5 league wins and 4th bottom in the league at the end of February. You may not agree with my comments, but don't start questioning my support of Brentford. There's a good chap.

Sorry, but I can't see anything crass in his comments.

Totally agree but how about just one season like Leicester had last season?

Has Woy retired?

Nope he hasn't met Woy on a crowded piccadilly line train to Green Park. Had a quick chat with him, certainly not retired but waiting for the right opportunity. The Foxes could probably fit that bill.

Personally feel they should have persisted with Ranieri, didn't look like a team that had stopped trying for their manager last night against a very good team.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

I agree, harsh maybe but they should have stepped up by using the money to buy better players than they already had. Many of their players were not young and past their best, they were never going to improve and realistically had over performed last year.

If they go down they will have players on big/ six figure wages in the Championship that nobody else will want, I don't think the parachute payments will cover it all.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

It's sad but correct IMO. Leicester are dropping like a stone and relegation looms. Last night IMO they were crap against Seville. No work rate, no organisation, no nothing. The players need to look at themselves.Something is fundamentally wrong at the club or it would have turned around by now.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Leicester haven't scored in the league in 2017, according to the BBC. Amazing.

I wonder where MB's statistical analysis placed them last season and this, just out of interest?

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

They could always appoint Redknapp who will cheerfully piss away their parachute money next season in the Championship. New ground for us as well. Sorry for Ranieri but his achievement last season was considerable and will never be forgotten.

Interesting the amount of support he is getting and that people are " outraged" at The clubs decision, yet just a few weeks ago posters were suggesting we should get rid of Smith as our results were poor and fans of other clubs that are suffering are equally quick to call for the sack, in one case fans if a club in the top 4 !!!

Personally I am not surprised st the clubs decision because as things stand they are looking relegation in the face, I believe I am correct in saying they have not scored a league goal this year and the lost revenue from relegation, irrespective of parachute payments, will be a major consideration

It is always easy to sack the manager and hope that whoever comes in will get that " bounce" as players try to impress. However the Leicester players should hang their heads in shame as it is there failures to perform following their big pay rises that has caused him to be sacked

It's the football culture these days. Aston villa fans are happy to see Bruce go and have their umpteenth manager. When I checked the Sheffield wed forum the other day after we won there was quite a few saying they would be happy to see their manager go either now or at the end of the season, calling him clueless.

Doesn't top Birmingham for most ridiculous managerial decision of the season for me

Right after a pretty creditable champions league performance in Sevilla too.

Should've kept him really... Don't think thier fans were particularly on his back looking at Twitter, most are supportive.

Maybe someone sent the Leicester City management a copy of Hunger in Paradise...

The players at Leicester have a lot to answer for. Ok one of two differences from last season but not enough change that should have resulted in such a turnaround in form. They need to take a long hard look at themselves. As for the owners enough said, just another sorry example of clubs losing touch with their supporters and money being the route of all evil.

I've been wondering recently whether Pearson's residual effect was actually what won them the title rather than Ranieri's managership. I hope that's wrong.

I wonder how many people who are poured scorn on LCFC for sacking Ranieri poured scorn on them when they hired him?

I seem to remember a fair few questioning the appointment

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

So.l what if they went down? They've gone down before and recovered like many others have....never seemed to bother the likes of Hull Sunderland or Newcastle ....had they stuck with him and gone down it needn't have been terminal .....I really really want them to go down now

The riches of the Premier League are so great now that I think the "hard headed" business men running Leicester and many other clubs would prefer to jog along in mid table rather than the ultimate high and then the potential low that they now face. Also heard on the radio that they decided to sack Ranieri before the home leg against Sevilla in case they won that and it made it harder to sack him.

Lots of people who had mocked Ranieri's appointment came out with this guff when Leicester were doing well, last season. They seemed to be trying to save face.

I think it's b***ocks. :sueme:

That is one helluva lot of "Residual" Paul. It was Ranieri's triumph not Pearson's.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Didn't realise Roberto Mancini had once played for Leicester City.
Mind you, so have Steve Claridge and Paul Dickov and they're not being linked with the manager's job there.

Pearson lost his job at Derby after, I wonder if Derby's great run under McClaren since October till the end of January, was also down to Pearson?:D

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

The LCFC players have a lot to answer for Ranieri's dismissal. Having unexpectedly won the PL, all or some of the squad were given new, quite obscene, new contracts. In the light of these, the intensity and hunger they had to achieve the same again had gone. Whilst they don't become bad players, technically, overnight, they certainly did IMO mentally. Now being even more comfortably off than they were last season, there was no incentive to them. The delights of the PL! The top teams seem to have the win at all costs mentality, LCFC certainly don't this season. I, for one, hope they do get relegated, and they have relegation clauses in their new contracts. If both of these, then they will realise there is no substitute for hard work. Oh, and it will be a new ground for me. Went to Filbert Street in 1993, though. as an aside, wish Detzi's strike had gone in, rather than hit the post - we would have won!

Bliss had an effort that went into the side netting.

Most of us thought it had gone in.

It's not the whole reason, but I'm sure it's a significant element.

For when Ranieri took over, he kept the same coaching/backroom staff that he had inherited. He kept the same players, and the same playing-style too, game after game. In fact, he was the exact opposite of his "Tinkerman" nickname.

Which is not to say that he had no part in their winning the title - of course he did.

But this season he brought in new players (most of whom simply haven't performed) and he reverted to tinkering with tactics and selections every single game, even during games. Add to that personal issues with players and coaches etc which weren't going to arise when the team was winning, plus the resurgence of teams which had underperformed last season (esp Chels, MU, MCity and L'pool), and imo that at least partly explains why they've struggled so badly this season.

Add to that the fact that for all that he is undoubtedly a genuine and likeable individual, he is not actually a very good man manager, as his record in many of his previous jobs clearly demonstrates.

In other words, you may like someone, but not rate their ability. Just as you may not like someone, but still respect their ability to do their job and therefore perform for them (eg Alex Ferguson).
