I think the colourful London arts scene, may well have played its part in attracting Mr Eger over here,. Or should that be Mr Van Gogh...

Marcel Eger

Seem to remember he signed on a 2 year deal with the option of a third year.

abee, is this appearance related or up to the player or club? Thanks.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned but for anybody intrigued by the whole St Pauli ethos there is an excellent lengthy feature which explains why they are a club unlike any other in Issue Zero of The Blizzard. The whole magazine can be downloaded for just a few pence under its 'pay what you want' model here;

The St Pauli story is really interesting. A friend of mine from Hamburg says all the glory hunters support Hamburg and the cool kids follow St Pauli.

Something about a long serving player from a club with St Pauli's ethos makes me think he'll be a good fit for us

Marcel Eger

Thought it would be good to have a weekend in hamburg taking in a st Pauli game but the bundesliga don't confirm which day of the weekend it will be/ fri/mon till a few weeks before the game. Chiz.

Yes I posted about that a few days ago. Still not finished reading Issue 0 yet, but reckon I got a bargain for my 2p. lol

I shall probably be guilted into paying more for Issue 2 when it comes out. :blush

I guess this is a little off-topic - if so, sorry.

As I posted earlier, I travel over occasionally to watch St Pauli, and yes, it really does live up to pretty much everything you'll have read and heard. Some things which may be of interest to anyone who wants to take this further:

There is an excellent (and pretty busy) forum for UK St Pauli fans (it extends to other countries too, and some German fans also post) at http://stpaulifansuk.forumup.co.uk/ .

The answers to all the questions about travel, and tickets are there, but I'm more than happy to field any if I can help - PM me or whatever. The short answer to the obvious question is that tickets were very hard to get last season, but should be easier this, but it's always a graft. The Millerntor only holds 28000, and every game sells out. It used to be possible to order online from overseas, but no longer. I don't know why.

A big help is the 'Fanladen', a fans' organisation (not the Club Shop, for those literally translating the German!) that is given an allocation of tickets for each match, which it then tries to distribute fairly amongst overseas fans, special requests, etc. That alone is pretty uniquely St Pauli.

All of St Pauli's games are shown live at two relatively local pubs - the Jolly Gardners, aka the Zeitgeist, in Vauxhall, and Captain Morgan's in Hayes (on Clayton Road, near the station). There is a good, friendly crowd in both. The Zeitgeist attracts more, and on match days the place can be packed. It's a proper German pub, as in run by Germans, not a pseudo lederhosen /beerkeller type of place. The landlord is a big FC Koeln fan, and German fans of all clubs turn up for live football, but it's de facto a St Pauli pub. For the derbies against H$V there were way more of us than them...

It makes for a good start actually, as the regulars consist of St Pauli expats, and people who like me who have latched onto St Pauli and support various clubs from London and beyond. A good mix. Many travel over to Hamburg for games, lots more regularly than I do. I haven't come across any other Bees fans yet tho'. Believe it or not, Marcel Eger turned up once last season, and his girlfriend a couple of times.

Captain Morgan's is cool too, just fewer people. Indeed, last time I was there, Sven Brux, the kind-of Peter Gilham of the club (see the article cited above - he's not just 'the security officer') was there.

German games' actual dates, as mentioned above, aren't finalised until a few weeks beforehand, and then only in batches of about 6-8. It's a total pain, and means that all you know until then is that a certain game will be played sometime between the Friday and Monday evening. Not even the German fans seem to know precisely why this is, though obviously TV looms large. Current known dates (and vague ones) are here on the official club site. Flights are easy and cheap to come by (if the words 'Easyjet' and 'Luton' in juxtaposition don't fill you with horror), and Hamburg is a neat and interesting city, and not that expensive to stay in. St Pauli is right in the heart of the city, just off the Reeperbahn in an area which is exactly like you might expect...

I'd better stop waffling as this is a Marcel Eger thread and not a St Pauli one, but be warned, it's a club which through its ethos and its amazing fans kind-of sucks you in, in a nice way, just as Brentford did me.

Didn't Vincent van Gogh live in Isleworth for a while? Did he paint GP?

I think so there's a blue plaque on a building near the swimming pool............there's no blue plaque on the house I used to live in just down the road though!

Yes Van Gogh lived right around the corner from me in Isleworth.... Right Next To a Skoda Garage, no wonder he wanted to live here. :backtotopic::backtotopic::backtotopic:

Just a quick St Pauli PS... Tickets for German games are massively cheaper than here. It cost me twelve euros to see St Pauli v Bayern Munich back in May, and that's for standing with the Ultras on the Sudkurve, which is where you want to be :)

I'm tempted to do a few games in Germany next year, I have always wanted to stand on the Südtribün at Borussia Dortmund, the largest free standing terrace in Europe.

Oh how I wish we could say that for Brentford FC. :(

I can see a commerical opportunity here for BFC to tap up any London based St Pauli fans as well as tie up a deal with St Pauli itself in Hamburg whereby visiting season ticket holders to London can take in a game at GP at suitably priced discounts. Vice versa any visiting BFC fans to Hamburg...

St Pauli fans, Man City fans...

Seems like there will be some good commercial opportunities

On the st Pauli fans forum some are thinking of coming over from Hamburg to give Egi a welcome.

Ooh, cool. Well spotted. I took the liberty of replying (in English as my written German is crap). It would be seriously fun to get something going here. In terms of outlook, we have a lot in common with them, I truly believe - the whole community-facing bit etc etc. They're fans-owned too, of course, but then again most (all?) clubs in Germany are. And their fans are just great!

Marcel Eger

Didn't Vincent van Gogh live in Isleworth for a while?

Yes. He was a big supporter of BFC and he cut off his ear in Brentford High Street after being cornered by Davee and listening to why the Club was going to hell in a hand basket for a depressing twenty minutes. Vince couldn't stand it any more.

Not many people know that.

Marcel Eger

Its in German !

They are pleased with how we welcomed Eger and talking about coming over for a weekender probably the Tranmere game as it's a lot cheaper!

He will also present his mission in the coming season, "Master Eger and his iPod."

From his new home in London the St. Pauli will contact you again with music from his extensive collection and new finds from the UK.

Learn the current transmission dates of Egis always here to show her fcstpauli.fm.

Appears to be one of the few players Rosler is using in first and 2nd half of friendly matches... a sign of captaincy?

Marcel Eger

Our man from Hamburg was indeed in the Zeitgeist in Vauxhall tonight to watch St Pauli's creditable 1-1 draw away to Eintracht Frankfurt. You can take the boy out of St Pauli but...

Marcel Eger

I was really pleased when I read that Marcel Eger found a decent club to continue his career in England. Looking forward to see how things develop. Brentford FC definitely has some more attention from people in Hamburg now.

Are tickets at Griffin Park available at match day or more difficult to get? I found information about stands, prices etc. on my own, but not how it really works.

....................................you'd fit in well with the ticket office, seems they don't have a clue either!!.....................

Marcel Eger

...........Mike Atherton look-a-like in the team photo..........

Marcel Eger

Fecked up his first 4 headers but then settled and grew into the game. He was unlucky not score and it was great to see a CB so comfortable on the ball and using both feet as well. Seems a very intelligent guy. The last book he read according to the programme was Siddharta ( the spiritual journey of a Nepali man during the time of the Buddha). Probably borrowed it from Myles. :fishing: :D

Marcel Eger

For the first 15 minutes i was really rather worried, but as other posters have said, he improved considerably as the match wore on. First night nerves i guess. He looks a real find.

Marcel Eger

I remember that when Hermann H first joined us in Lge 2, he was sometimes knocked out of his stride by over-physical strikers, but soon got used to it. I thought Marcel was having a similar start, but he settled as the game went on and certainly has skill and composure. He may get caught out once or twice in early games, but I'm sure he'll settle soon and be a good acquisition

Marcel Eger

Marcel Eger was great signing, if you know anything about football you will recognise what a very talented player he is, and he'll get better and better for us. I think he and Karleigh complement each other and will form the spine of our team this season. In Karleigh we have a quick, strong defender, Marcel is smaller but reads the game and can pass the ball out of defence rather that aimlessly head if up the field............

Marcel Eger

He was definitely one of the rustier signings and looked out of sorts for the early stages.

That said, he got better and better as the game wore on, and he looked like a decent ball-playing centre-back. However I think we will see our fair share of Legge this season, against the more physical/direct teams in the league.

Marcel Eger

Eger reads the game too well to be dropped for Legge. Against tougher opponents, quality will shine through (Eger), not brute force (Legge).

Couldn't have put it better myself !

Did he read it in Hermann Hesse German or the Hilda Rosner translation into English?

Marcel Eger

A useful start. got better as the game wore on. We now have great competition for places in the middle of defence but Eger needs to look no further than Osborne to see where he needs to be. Another great performance from Karleigh who set the standard again, and must be one of the first names on the team sheet now.

Marcel Eger

Great to see him geeing the crowd up when his header was saved in the second half. Love all that. COME ON!! :nono:

Marcel Eger

Hmmm, we have seen Eger play one competitive game and are regarding him as the new messiah? Fair play to him, he looked decent in the second half but he hasn't done enough for me to completely write off Legge. Horses for courses, Eger may get the nod against against technical teams but against direct, physical opponents Legge will be the main man. Uwe does his homework and will use Legge when we face an aerial bombardment or a massive target man. It is strange that people so quickly write off a good player who formed one of the meanest defences in the division last season?

Marcel Eger

I think Marcel will need time and patience from supporters to adapt to the English game in the same way Hermann needed it.

Marcel Eger

Couldnt believe some were calling for him to be replaced at half time on Saturday lol

Not sure about that. I'm reserving judgment at present. I thought Osborne and Legge were/are a pretty good pairing.
However, early days yet for Marcel as others have said.
